Left ear ringing: spiritual meaning and emotional causes

The emotional and spiritual meaning of ringing in the left ear: your inner voice, feelings you would rather not hear, a silence in a close bond, and what folklore says.

In short
Spiritually, ringing in the left ear is linked to listening inward. The noise may sit with feelings you would rather not hear, an inner voice you keep talking over, or a silence in a close relationship that has become hard to bear.

What left ear ringing is

Ringing in the left ear is a sound heard in that ear with no source outside: a ring, a hiss, a whistle, a hum or a buzz. When it lasts or keeps coming back, it is called tinnitus. A brief high ring that fades within seconds in a quiet room is very common and usually means nothing.

Ringing on one side only is different from ringing in both ears, and doctors take it more seriously. Many of its causes are simple and treatable: earwax blocking the left ear canal, an ear infection or fluid behind the eardrum, or a cold that blocks the tube between the ear and the throat. Noise can damage one ear more than the other, for example in someone who shoots, where the ear nearer the muzzle takes the blast. Ménière's disease usually starts in one ear, with bouts of vertigo, a feeling of fullness and fluctuating hearing. Rarely, one-sided tinnitus comes from a slow-growing, non-cancerous growth on the hearing nerve, which is one reason a GP will want to check it, often with a hearing test and sometimes a scan.

Sudden hearing loss in one ear, with or without ringing, needs a doctor within 24 hours, because early treatment can protect the hearing. Ringing that beats with your pulse also needs checking. For lasting tinnitus, care includes treating the cause, hearing aids if hearing is reduced, sound therapy, and talking therapies that teach the brain to pay the noise less attention.

The emotional meaning of left ear ringing

Spiritually, the ears are about listening: to the world, to other people, and to yourself. They warn you of danger and help hold your balance. The state of the ears is linked to how open you are to your deepest emotions. In the map of the left and right sides of the body, the left side carries the receptive, feminine principle, in men and women alike: feeling, intuition, tenderness, receiving, and the women in your life. So a ringing left ear points the question inward.

A radio between stations

When a radio is tuned exactly to a station that happens to be silent, you hear a clean silence. When it drifts between stations, you hear hiss. Spiritually, ringing in the left ear can be pictured as that drift: you are slightly off your own inner frequency. The noise may ask how long it has been since you listened to your needs, your desires and the quiet knowing that tells you what is right for you.

Feelings you would rather not hear

The left ear is the side of emotion, and some emotions feel too risky to hear. You may have pushed down sorrow, longing or anger because you feared it would knock your inner balance over. The ringing can be heard, symbolically, as a sound that covers that feeling so it never quite reaches you. The question is which feeling you keep turning the volume over.

A silence in a close bond

Ringing in the ears is often linked to feeling far from someone you love, because communication has broken down. On the left, this tends to be a partner, a mother, a daughter, a close friend. The reassurance, explanations or kind words you need are missing, and the silence feels frightening, even hostile. You may withdraw into your shell to protect yourself from that wall. Being alone feels good only when you choose it, and here it feels imposed.

Holding on to a pain

Sometimes the sound keeps you in contact with a suffering you do not want to forget, a loss that still asks to be remembered. If grief is part of your story, the ringing may ask whether there is a way to stay close to the person or the time you lost without staying in pain. Silence can also bring thoughts of death, and a mind afraid of them can fill the quiet with noise.

Intuition and the women in your life

The left ear is also where intuition is said to speak. You may hear your inner voice clearly and then argue yourself out of it. And because the left side holds your relationship with the feminine, the ringing may touch something a woman close to you is saying, or not saying, that you find hard to take in.

In folklore

Popular belief, not medicine and not the spiritual interpretation above, says a ringing ear means someone is talking about you, an idea old enough to appear in the writings of Pliny the Elder in the first century. In a common version, the left ear rings when someone speaks ill of you, but many families say the opposite. These are sayings, and they predict nothing. The guides to left or right ear ringing and burning ears look at these beliefs more closely.

The other side

Right ear ringing turns towards the outer world: pressure to perform, recognition, a change at work you did not choose, and advice you would rather not hear. The left ear asks what you are not hearing inside yourself, the right what you refuse to hear about your actions. The tinnitus page holds both.

A gentler way to hold it

  • Get the ear checked first. One-sided ringing deserves a doctor, and peace of mind helps everything else.
  • Tune in for a few minutes a day. Sit quietly and ask what you need right now. Write down the first answer.
  • Let one feeling be heard. Say it aloud to yourself, or to someone safe, instead of covering it.
  • Break the silence gently. If a close relationship has gone quiet, a short, kind message can start the conversation again.
  • Choose your solitude. Make time alone a decision you take, not only something that happens to you.
  • Fill the quiet softly. Gentle background sounds at night can make the ringing easier to live with.

Questions to ask yourself

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

  • What was happening in my emotional life when the ringing started?
  • Which feeling would upset my balance if I let myself hear it?
  • Is there a silence with someone I love that frightens me?
  • Which reassurance or kind words am I waiting for that do not come?
  • What has my inner voice been telling me that I keep talking over?
  • Do I choose my moments of solitude, or do they feel imposed on me?
Affirmation
“I tune in to my inner voice. I hear my feelings with gentleness, and I let silence become a place of rest.”

When to see a doctor

Please seek medical advice if you notice:
  • Ringing in the left ear only. Tinnitus in one ear should be checked by a GP, who may arrange a hearing test or a scan.
  • Sudden hearing loss in the left ear, with or without ringing. See a doctor the same day if you can, and within 24 hours at most, as early treatment can save hearing.
  • Ringing that beats in time with your pulse.
  • Ringing with dizziness, vertigo, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or loss of balance.
  • Ringing with weakness or numbness of the face, slurred speech or a change in vision. Call emergency services (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in the EU).
  • Ringing after a head injury, with ear pain or discharge, or after a very loud noise.
  • Ringing that disturbs your sleep, mood or concentration. Support and therapies exist.
Earache
Spiritually, earache is often linked to hurt, irritation or anguish about what you hear, from criticism and quarrels to the words you wait for and never receive, and to an invitation to listen more closely to yourself.
Hearing loss
Hearing loss is a drop in how much sound the ear can take. It is read as a closing against words that wound, and against a noise that has become too much.
Right ear ringing
Spiritually, ringing in the right ear is linked to the outer world. The noise may sit with pressure to perform, a need for recognition, a change you did not choose, and words or advice about your decisions that you would rather not hear.
Vertigo
Vertigo is the sense that you or the room are spinning. It is read as a life moving too fast to stand in, and as an inner balance that has been replaced by an outer one.
