Left or right ear ringing: spiritual meaning
A sudden ringing in one ear is one of the most searched body signs. In folklore, it means someone is talking about you: kind words in one ear, unkind ones in the other, with every family disagreeing on which is which. Spiritually, a ringing ear is linked to listening, especially to your inner voice, and to words or truths you would rather not hear; the right ear asks about action and decisions, the left about feelings. A short ring that fades within moments is common. Ringing that lasts, returns often or comes with hearing loss is tinnitus, and needs a check.
What does ear ringing mean spiritually?
The ears are about listening: to the world around you, to other people, and to yourself. They warn you of danger, and they also hold your balance, keeping you upright and centred. In the spiritual approach, the state of your ears is linked to how open you are to what you hear, including your own deepest feelings.
Not listening to your inner voice
Spiritually, ringing in the ears is linked to not listening to the inner signals that guide your life. You may be "doing it your way", out of habit or stubbornness, and closing your ears to anything that would make you change course. The ringing can be heard as noise placed over a quieter voice.
A truth you are not ready to hear
Ringing is also linked to words you find unpleasant, and to a fear of knowing: of finding out the truth about a situation, or of having to make a decision once you know. A ringing ear may ask, gently: what am I refusing to hear right now, from someone else or from myself?
A busy, noisy head
When ideas keep going round and round, when worry or anxiety fills every quiet moment, it becomes hard to hear your own wisdom. The ringing can match that inner state: a mind full of chatter, sometimes building a whole story in the head that is not quite real.
"Someone is thinking of me"
Many people feel that a ringing ear means someone is thinking of them. The spiritual interpretation turns this round: often it is you who are thinking of them. The question becomes who is on your mind, and what you have not said or heard in that relationship.
Is ear ringing a sign of spiritual awakening?
Online, a high-pitched ringing is often described as a sign of awakening, angels, or a "frequency shift". Nothing supports this as fact. In some spiritual traditions, though, certain inner sounds heard in meditation, like a stream, bells or a soft hum, are described as a sign that inner listening is opening up. If that idea speaks to you, treat it as a reason to sit quietly and listen, not as a reason to skip an ear check. A sound that stays is tinnitus until a doctor says otherwise.
In folklore
This section is popular belief. It is not medicine, and it is not the spiritual interpretation above.
The idea that your ears ring when you are being talked about is very old and found across Europe and beyond. The details vary:
- Right ear ringing: often said to mean someone is praising you or speaking well of you.
- Left ear ringing: often said to mean someone is criticising you or speaking ill of you.
Many places reverse it, and some read it as a sign that news is on its way rather than gossip. A popular game is to guess who is talking: if you name the right person, the ringing is supposed to stop.
Modern versions add new layers: a ringing ear as a message from someone who has died, from angels, or from a "twin flame". These are beliefs, not facts. A ringing ear tells you nothing reliable about what anyone else is doing.
What the Bible says
The Bible does not treat ringing ears as an omen. The closest images are about hearing. In 1 Samuel 3:11 (KJV), God tells Samuel he will do something in Israel at which "both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle": news so shocking it rings in the ears. In 2 Timothy 4:3, "itching ears" describes people who only want to hear what pleases them. Both, in their way, are about listening, which is also where the spiritual approach goes.
Left ear or right ear ringing?
Spiritually, the right side of the body is linked to the masculine principle (action, logic, decisions, work and the men in your life) and the left side to the feminine principle (feeling, intuition, receiving and the women in your life), in men and women alike. See the left and right sides of the body.
| Folklore says | Spiritual question | |
|---|---|---|
| Right ear | Someone is praising you | What am I refusing to hear about my choices, my work, or from a man close to me? |
| Left ear | Someone is criticising you | Am I shutting out my own feelings and intuition, or something a woman close to me is saying? |
| Both ears | No fixed meaning | Is my whole life too noisy to hear myself think? |
Right ear ringing: decisions and direction
A ringing right ear may point to advice you keep brushing aside about a practical matter: work, money, a plan. It can also touch a relationship with your father, a partner, a brother or a boss, where words are not getting through in one direction or the other.
Left ear ringing: feelings and intuition
A ringing left ear may ask whether you are listening to your feelings or arguing yourself out of them. It can touch the relationship with your mother, a daughter, a friend or a partner. Intuition, in this approach, belongs to the left side: the quiet "I already know" that is easy to talk over. Our guide to the third eye chakra looks at intuition in more depth.
For women and for men
The map is the same for everyone. The question can shift a little:
- For a woman, a ringing right ear may touch pressure in her working life or a role she has outgrown; a ringing left ear, a part of herself she does not let speak.
- For a man, a ringing right ear may touch rivalry or pressure to perform; a ringing left ear, feelings he finds hard to express or to hear from others.
Is ear ringing a good or bad sign?
In folklore, it depends on the side. Spiritually, it is neither: it is an invitation to listen. A short ring is usually harmless. Ringing that becomes constant, beats with your pulse, or comes with other symptoms is a medical sign, not a spiritual one.
Brief ringing or tinnitus? The medical side
Most people notice now and then a short, high tone in one ear that fades within moments, or a ringing after a loud concert. On its own, a brief episode like this is common.
Tinnitus is the name for hearing sounds that do not come from outside: ringing, buzzing, hissing, humming, whooshing or throbbing, in one or both ears or in the head. The NHS says it is not usually a sign of anything serious and may get better by itself. It is often linked to some form of hearing loss, and also to Ménière's disease, conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders or multiple sclerosis, anxiety or depression, and some medicines. MedlinePlus adds loud noise, ear and sinus infections, and blood vessel problems. Earwax or an ear infection can also be found at a check. Our page on tinnitus covers its emotional meaning in detail.
When to see a doctor
- See a GP if you have ringing regularly or constantly, if it is getting worse, or if it is affecting your sleep, concentration or mood.
- Ask for an urgent GP appointment if the sound beats in time with your pulse.
- Go to A&E or call 999 if ringing starts after a head injury, or comes with sudden hearing loss, weakness in the face, or a spinning feeling (vertigo).
Ear pain with ringing is covered in earache.
A gentler way to use this
- Protect your ears first. Lower the volume, take breaks from noise, and get a ringing that lasts checked.
- Pause when it rings. Ask, without forcing an answer: what did I just hear, think or decide?
- Name what you would rather not hear. A piece of advice, a truth about a relationship, your own "no". Write it down.
- Let go of one fixed idea. Notice an opinion you hold about someone, and listen to them once as if you did not already know what they will say.
- Make room for quiet. A few minutes a day without input. If stress keeps the noise high, its page may help.
- Turn round "someone is thinking of me". Ask who you are thinking of, and whether there is something to say to them.
