Gluten intolerance: spiritual meaning and emotional causes

The emotional and spiritual meaning of gluten intolerance: people in your bubble, feeling invaded, pushing everyone away, and taking your space.
Bowel Also known as: Gluten sensitivity, Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, Wheat intolerance, Gluten allergy, Non-celiac gluten sensitivity, Intolérance au gluten
In short
Gluten intolerance covers coeliac disease, wheat allergy and gluten sensitivity, which need to be told apart by a doctor. Spiritually, it is linked to feeling that others are always inside your bubble, to loving and resenting the people who support you, and to needing your own space.

What gluten intolerance is

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. In bread, it forms the elastic web that traps the gas bubbles and gives the crumb its texture. "Gluten intolerance" is an everyday phrase that covers three quite different conditions.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease. When a person with coeliac disease eats gluten, the immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine and damages it. Symptoms include diarrhoea, bloating, gas, tummy pain, weight loss and tiredness, but some people have few digestive symptoms and only anaemia, mouth ulcers or an itchy rash. It is diagnosed with a blood test and often a biopsy, and treated with a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet. Left untreated, it can lead to thin bones, anaemia and other complications.

Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction to wheat proteins, which can cause hives, swelling or, rarely, a severe reaction. It is more common in children. See allergies.

Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity describes people who get symptoms such as bloating, tummy pain or tiredness after eating gluten, without coeliac disease or a wheat allergy. It is still not well understood, and other parts of wheat may be involved. It overlaps with irritable bowel syndrome.

The key practical point: get tested for coeliac disease before cutting out gluten. If you stop first, the tests can come back falsely normal, and you may be left on a restrictive diet without knowing whether you need it for life. If the tests are negative, a GP or dietitian can help you look at other causes, such as irritable bowel syndrome, and try changes in a structured way. A food diary of what you eat and how you feel is a useful thing to bring.

The emotional meaning of gluten intolerance

Gluten is what holds the bubbles inside the bread. Spiritually, intolerance to it is linked to your own bubble: the space around you that is yours, and what happens when others are always inside it.

Others in your bubble

If gluten disagrees with you, the question is whether you feel hemmed in. Other people, especially your friends, seem to be constantly in your personal space. You are so surrounded that you can hardly breathe. They "stick to your skin".

Loving the people who hold you up

There is a duality in this. You love the people around you, very much because they support you, hold you up and protect you. At the same time, you sometimes feel that they want to shape your life, or even run it. The same closeness that keeps you safe takes your air.

A prisoner of yourself

You may feel a prisoner of yourself, and so of others as well. Part of you wants to let everything go and push them all far away. The question underneath is a quiet one: what are you trying to hide from yourself?

Closeness that becomes too much

The image of the bread helps. Gluten makes a web that holds every bubble in place, so that nothing can move freely. In the same way, a close circle of people can hold you so tightly that you have no room of your own. What began as support turns into a net. You may not notice it until the body starts to refuse.

Sensitive and easily invaded

You are very sensitive, and you let yourself be invaded easily. Gluten intolerance can be a way of recognising that you have reached your limits. The step it points to is learning to take your place, and to give yourself room.

A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to blame yourself for a reaction to food. The immune system, the gut and genes play a real part, and the tests above matter. The emotional perspective invites you to look at your space and how you guard it.

  • Look at your real needs. Write down what you actually need from the people around you, and what you do not.
  • Say them. Affirm your needs with everyone around you, kindly and clearly.
  • Be yourself among others. You can affirm your individuality and take your place while still respecting theirs.
  • Choose solitude on purpose. Moments alone let you reconnect with your inner world.
  • Listen inwardly. Each time you follow the inner voice that knows what you need, your sense of freedom grows.
  • Meet your own needs. Support from others is precious. Knowing you can also look after yourself makes their closeness lighter.

Questions to ask yourself

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

  • Do I feel that other people, especially friends, are always inside my bubble?
  • Do I love the people around me for their support, and also feel smothered by it?
  • Do I feel others are trying to shape or manage my life?
  • Do I sometimes want to push everyone away and let everything go?
  • What might I be hiding from myself behind all this closeness?
  • Have I reached my limits without saying so?
Affirmation
“I look at my real needs and I say them. I take my place, I give myself space, and I listen to the inner voice that knows what I need.”

When to see a doctor

Please seek medical advice if you notice:
  • If you think gluten upsets you, see a GP and ask about a coeliac disease blood test before you cut gluten out. The test only works while you are still eating gluten.
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or feeling faint after eating. Call emergency services, as this can be a severe allergic reaction.
  • Unexplained weight loss, blood in your poo, persistent vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Ongoing diarrhoea, bloating, tummy pain or tiredness, or anaemia with no clear cause.
  • A child who is not growing or gaining weight as expected.
  • If you have coeliac disease, keep to the gluten-free diet your care team recommends, and do not reintroduce gluten because of anything you read here.
Bloating
Spiritually, bloating is often linked to a feeling of emotional hunger, the sense that you never receive quite enough attention or affection, together with a rush that keeps you from seeing what life already gives you.
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is often read as a flight. Fear, a new situation you cannot take in, or something you refuse to digest may move through you so fast that nothing is assimilated, including the good.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Spiritually, irritable bowel syndrome is often linked to holding on to a long-standing situation you need to leave behind, to nervousness about the unknown, and to swallowing what you find indigestible in order to be approved of and loved.
Anaemia
Anaemia is a lack of haemoglobin, so the blood carries less oxygen and the body feels drained. It is read as a joy, a love and a strength that have thinned, and as a life lived in "yes, but".
Allergies
Spiritually, allergies are often linked to a body on constant alert, a part of yourself you reject or push away, and an old memory, often a separation, that still irritates the present.
