What gas and flatulence are

Flatulence is gas that builds up in the digestive tract and leaves through the back passage. Gas can also come up as burping. Everyone passes wind, often between 5 and 15 times a day. Gas comes from air swallowed while eating, drinking or chewing gum, and from bacteria in the large bowel breaking down food that was not fully digested, especially fibre-rich foods such as beans, lentils, cabbage, onions and some sweeteners.

Gas can cause bloating, rumbling and cramping pains that move around the belly. More gas than usual can be linked to constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease or an infection. Eating more slowly, changing a few foods and moving more often help. A pharmacist can suggest simple remedies, and a doctor can look for a cause when it is persistent.

The emotional meaning of gas and flatulence

Spiritually, gas is linked to what we keep inside when it would be better let through. The digestive tract holds on to what it does not need, and it swells.

Holding on for fear of losing

When you cling to a person or a situation, it is as if you keep inside things that are unwanted and no longer good for you. Behind the clinging there is often fear and anxiety: the impression that you are about to lose something or someone important, whether in love, in your thinking, in material life or on the spiritual level.

Feelings that ferment

You may keep chewing over the same feelings and the same insecurities. What is turned over and over begins to ferment inside, and comes out at the moment you least expect, when it makes itself "felt". The image is a little comic, and it is also tender: what you have not let yourself feel finds its own way out.

Swallowing what is wrong for you

You may also force yourself to "swallow" a situation, a person or an emotion that goes against your principles and your conscience. The result, symbolically, is that you swell. In the same way, wanting to solve the problems of the whole world becomes heavy to carry.

Parasites and lost peace

The spiritual interpretation of gas also asks whether there are "parasites" in your life, people or habits that get in the way of your growth. An inner war may be breaking your peace.

When the smell is strong

If the gas is foul-smelling, the question becomes: what in my life "does not smell right"? There may be something you want to get rid of in order to recover your freedom and your space.

A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to feel embarrassed or guilty. Gas is a normal part of digestion, and food and gut bacteria explain most of it. The emotional perspective simply asks what you are holding in.

  • Let yourself feel. Give yourself permission to notice what is going on inside you, without rushing to fix it.
  • Loosen your grip. Name one person or situation you are clinging to, and ask what you fear would happen if you held it more lightly.
  • Stop chewing it over. When a worry comes round for the tenth time, write it down once and set it aside.
  • Say no to what goes against you. You do not have to swallow every situation to keep the peace.
  • Put the world down. Choose which problems are truly yours to carry.
  • Trust that you have what you need. Letting go is easier when you remember you are not empty-handed.

Questions to ask yourself

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

  • Which person or situation am I clinging to, afraid I will lose it?
  • What feelings or insecurities do I keep going over again and again?
  • What have I "swallowed" that goes against my principles?
  • Am I trying to solve everyone's problems, until it feels too heavy?
  • Is there someone or something in my life that drains me and holds back my growth?
  • What in my life "does not smell right", and what would I need to clear it away?
Affirmation
“I allow myself to feel what is happening inside me. I can trust and let go, knowing I have what I need.”

When to see a doctor

Please seek medical advice if you notice:
  • Gas with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a swollen hard belly, and no stools or wind passing. Seek urgent medical care, as this can be a blockage.
  • Blood in the stools or black stools.
  • Gas with diarrhoea that does not settle, unexplained weight loss, or a lasting change in bowel habits.
  • Gas and bloating that happen most days, or that disturb your daily life. A doctor can check for causes such as food intolerance, coeliac disease or irritable bowel syndrome.
Bloating
Spiritually, bloating is often linked to a feeling of emotional hunger, the sense that you never receive quite enough attention or affection, together with a rush that keeps you from seeing what life already gives you.
Constipation
Constipation is often read as a sign of holding on. A need to control events, insecurity, fear of the unknown and difficulty letting go of the past or of old emotions may keep things from moving.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Spiritually, irritable bowel syndrome is often linked to holding on to a long-standing situation you need to leave behind, to nervousness about the unknown, and to swallowing what you find indigestible in order to be approved of and loved.
