Throat chakra: meaning, blockage signs and the body
By the Body Hemi-Sync editorial teamUpdated Editorial policy
The throat chakra is the fifth of the seven main chakras, the energy centres of yoga and of modern spiritual practice. It sits at the throat, and in the modern Western system it is blue and linked with space, also called ether. Spiritually it is the centre of expression: saying what you feel, speaking your truth, and letting what you create come out into the world.
This guide covers where the throat chakra is, which parts of the body and which feelings it is linked with, what people mean when they say it is "blocked", and a few gentle ways to tend it. For the whole system in one place, start with chakras and the body.
Where is the throat chakra, and what is it called?
| Throat chakra | |
|---|---|
| Sanskrit name | Vishuddha (Viśuddha or Viśuddhi), usually translated "very pure" or "purest" |
| Position in the system | Fifth of seven, between the heart chakra and the third eye chakra |
| Location | The throat, with its surface point in the hollow at the base of the neck |
| Colour (modern Western system) | Blue |
| Element | Space (ether, akasha in Sanskrit) |
| Traditional symbol | A lotus of sixteen petals |
The name speaks of purification, and the element of space fits a centre whose work is sound: a voice needs room to carry. In traditional descriptions the throat chakra is linked with the neck, with hearing through the ears and with speaking through the mouth. The thyroid gland, just below the voice box, is often paired with it.
The blue colour belongs to the modern Western version of the chakras. The rainbow colours were added in the twentieth century, largely through Charles W. Leadbeater's 1927 book The Chakras. Older Indian texts describe this lotus differently, with a white centre and smoke-coloured or purple petals.
Is a "blocked throat chakra" real?
It is worth saying this once, clearly. Chakras are a spiritual and symbolic map of the person, not part of anatomy. There is no scientific evidence that they exist, and there is no way to measure whether one is open, closed or "blocked". The seven-chakra system reached the West in the 1880s; in the 1920s each chakra was paired with an endocrine gland, and emotions, colours and illnesses were added to the lists later still.
So when people talk about a blocked throat chakra, they are describing an inner experience in spiritual language: words that will not come, a voice that shrinks, a feeling of swallowing what you wanted to say. That language can be a useful way to reflect. It cannot explain a sore throat, a hoarse voice or a thyroid problem. Those need a doctor, and the two do not compete.
Which parts of the body are linked with the throat chakra?
The throat chakra is usually linked with everything that carries the voice and joins the head to the body.
| Body area | Why it is linked | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Throat | Swallowing and speaking | Sore throat, lump in the throat |
| Voice box | The voice itself | Laryngitis |
| Thyroid | The gland paired with this chakra | The thyroid, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism |
| Neck | The bridge between head and body | Stiff neck |
| Jaw | Words held behind closed teeth | Jaw pain, teeth grinding |
| Mouth | Where speech takes shape | The mouth and teeth |
The throat
Spiritually, the throat is where you take life in, through breath, water and food, and where you let your feelings out, from the heart up to the voice. It is a two-way bridge between the head and the body. It is called the centre of creativity, truth and self-affirmation, and the idea that "thought creates, the word makes it happen" belongs here: what you say aloud is felt to carry more weight than what you only think.
When the throat hurts, the questions are about expression. Is there something you said and regret, or something you feel you should have said? Is there anger you swallowed because you feared how others would react? Is there a situation you are being asked to "swallow" that goes against what you believe? A lump in the throat is the everyday image of all this: something that will not go down and will not come up.
The throat chakra is also said to work closely with the sacral chakra, the centre of sexual energy. Both are about creativity and communication: the voice carries thoughts, the body carries feelings. So a troubled throat can be a prompt to look at frustration in either place.
The voice
Spiritually, a hoarse voice is read as tiredness of mind and body, and a strong emotion held back, often aggression you do not allow yourself to show. Rigid ideas about work, such as "you have to work hard to succeed", and the coffee or other stimulants that keep you going are part of the picture. The inner step is a pause: rest, and then let the voice out again, for example by singing.
The thyroid
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. It makes hormones that set how the body uses energy, and they affect the heart rate, weight, digestion and mood. Spiritually, it is the centre of speech and creativity, and of how you take your place rather than letting others limit you. Out of harmony, the themes are not expressing yourself, a feeling of being stifled or trapped, and of swallowing insults, or a conflict with time: feeling rushed, or having had to grow up too fast. With an underactive thyroid, the questions turn to discouragement, how you communicate with yourself and others, and a grievance that eats at you from inside.
This is a way of reflecting, not a cause. Thyroid conditions are diagnosed with a medical history, an examination and thyroid tests, and treated with medicines, radioiodine therapy or surgery. Many people are told to keep taking thyroid hormone long term. Do not stop or change the dose because of anything you read here.
Emotions stored in the throat chakra
In this approach, the throat chakra is where unspoken feelings gather. These are the ones most often named, each with its own page:
- Anger: an inner alarm that wants to be said, and a fire in the throat when it is swallowed instead.
- Timidity: the fear of being judged, which keeps the voice small and the words safe.
- Shame: the belief that something in you should be hidden, so it is better not to speak at all.
"Stored" is a figure of speech. Feelings are not kept inside the throat. What the image captures is real enough: when we hold back tears or words, the throat tightens, the jaw clenches and the voice changes.
Signs people describe as a blocked throat chakra
In the chakra tradition, a throat chakra that is closed or out of balance is described through feelings and habits. People often name:
- difficulty saying no, or saying what you really think
- swallowing your anger and replaying the conversation afterwards
- fear of being ridiculed if you speak up
- speaking too much, too fast or too harshly, to cover what you do not say
- a creative project you never let anyone see
- a feeling of being misunderstood
- clearing your throat or touching your neck when a subject is uncomfortable
These are things to notice and reflect on, nothing more. They are not a diagnosis, and none of them is caused by a chakra.
Physical symptoms deserve a doctor. The NHS says to call 999 or go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing or cannot swallow, are drooling, or make a high-pitched sound when you breathe in. See a GP for a sore throat that has not eased after about a week, sore throats that keep coming back, or a lump in your mouth or neck. For laryngitis, see a GP if your voice has not improved after two weeks or you keep losing it. A swelling at the front of the neck or tiredness that will not lift is worth mentioning to a GP, who can arrange thyroid tests.
A gentle practice for the throat chakra
None of these needs any belief in chakras. They are simple ways of giving the feelings above some room. They are not treatment for any condition.
- Breathe out longer. Sit tall, relax your shoulders and jaw, and breathe in through the nose. Breathe out slowly through the mouth, a little longer than the in-breath. Notice whether your throat softens.
- Hum. Hum one comfortable note for a few breaths and feel the vibration in your throat and chest. In the traditional system the throat chakra's seed sound is "ham"; any sound you like works just as well. Singing along to a song you love counts.
- Write what you did not say. Take one conversation where you held back and write what you would have said, without editing. You do not have to send it. Sometimes it becomes the first draft of what you will say.
- Say one small true thing a day. "I'd rather not." "I disagree." "That hurt." Start where it is safe.
- Release the jaw. Let your teeth part, your tongue rest on the floor of your mouth, and gently massage the muscles in front of your ears.
- Rest the voice. If your voice is tired or hoarse, speak as little as you can, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid talking loudly or whispering: the NHS notes that both strain the voice.
Where to go next
Continue with the next centre up, the third eye chakra, or go back down to the heart chakra. The chakras and the body guide shows all seven together.
This guide is for reflection and general information. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you cannot swallow or are struggling to breathe, call your local emergency number (999 in the UK).
