Itchy feet: spiritual meaning, left or right foot

What itchy feet mean: the travel folklore, the spiritual meaning of direction and restlessness, left vs right foot, and when itchy feet need a doctor.
Symptoms7 min read
In short
In folklore, itchy feet mean a journey is coming, and 'itchy feet' is also an English phrase for restlessness. Spiritually, the feet are linked to your direction, your stability and the position you take in life, so an itch here may ask where you are impatient to go, or what is keeping you in place. The right foot asks about practical steps, the left about emotional support. Most itchy feet are athlete's foot, dry skin or eczema.

In folklore, itchy feet mean you are about to travel, and in everyday English "itchy feet" is the restless urge to move on. Spiritually, the feet are linked to your direction, your stability and the position you take in life, so an itch here may ask where you are impatient to go, or what is keeping you in place. The right foot asks about the practical steps you are taking, the left about whether you feel emotionally supported as you go. Physically, the commonest causes are athlete's foot, dry skin and eczema.

This guide covers the spiritual meaning, the folklore, the left and right feet, women and men, whether it is a good or bad sign, and when itchy feet need a doctor.

What do itchy feet mean spiritually?

The legs and feet carry you forward. Spiritually, the feet stand for your contact with the earth, the ground that holds and feeds you. They give you stability as you move towards a goal, a wish or a direction. They also stand for the position you take: where you stand in a situation, and your place in society.

An itch, in the spiritual approach, is an irritation that has slipped under the skin, often with impatience and the feeling that life is not moving the way, or at the speed, you want. When it settles in the feet, the questions turn to your path.

Impatient to move on

Itchy feet may point to wanting to go somewhere: a new job, a move, a change of life. Something may be dragging, and you want it to go faster. The question is whether the urge is a true call, or a way of escaping something you would rather not face where you are.

Hesitating about the direction

The feet are also linked to conflict between where you are heading and the movement you are actually making. You may be unsure which way to go, afraid of the future and its surprises, or finding it hard to let go of the past. In French you can "not know which foot to dance on", meaning you cannot decide. An itchy foot may sit with that hesitation.

Your place, and being walked on

Spiritually, the feet ask about the place you take. Do you let others walk all over you? Do you hold your position, or give it up to keep the peace? A restless itch may ask you to take a clearer stand somewhere.

Too fast, or too slow

Problems in the feet are also linked to pace. You may be dragging your feet out of boredom or discouragement in front of too many responsibilities. Or you may be racing ahead, pushing things through and leaning on others instead of on your own inner resources. Either way, the feet can ask you to find your own rhythm.

Roots and family

The feet are in constant contact with the earth, and in this approach the earth is linked to the mother. Itchy or troubled feet may raise a gentle question about the relationship with your mother or the person who played that role: wanting more distance, or more closeness, than life allows. Leaving the family nest can be part of it.

In folklore

This section is popular belief. It is not medicine, and it is not the spiritual interpretation above.

The best-known saying is simple: itchy feet mean a journey. Many versions go by side:

  • Itchy right foot: a good or profitable journey, or travel for a happy reason.
  • Itchy left foot: a journey you will not enjoy, or one that brings disappointment.

As always, some regions reverse the sides. An itchy sole is sometimes said to mean you will soon walk on new ground. The English phrase "to have itchy feet", meaning a restless wish to travel or change, grew out of the same idea.

These are sayings. An itch does not book you a ticket.

Left foot or right foot?

Spiritually, the right side of the body is linked to the masculine principle (action, logic, decisions, work and the men in your life) and the left to the feminine principle (feeling, intuition, receiving and the women in your life), in men and women alike. Which foot is involved can show where the hesitation, or the urge to move, sits. See the left and right sides of the body.

Folklore saysSpiritual question
Right footA good journeyAm I impatient about a practical step, at work or in a decision? Is the direction my own, or chosen for me?
Left footA disappointing journeyDo I feel emotionally supported as I go? Is a relationship, especially with a woman close to me, holding me back or pulling me on?
Both feetTravel soonDo I want to change my whole way of life? Where am I truly standing?

Itchy right foot: steps and direction

An itchy right foot may point to the outer path: a career move, a project you want to "get on its feet", a decision about where to live. It can also touch your relationship with your father or another man who influences your direction.

Itchy left foot: support and feeling

An itchy left foot may ask whether you feel held as you move forward, and whether your heart agrees with the direction your head has chosen. It can touch your relationship with your mother, a partner or a friend.

For women and for men

The map is the same for everyone.

  • For a woman, an itchy right foot may touch the direction of her working life, or roles she wants to leave behind; an itchy left foot, her need to feel supported, or her bond with her mother.
  • For a man, an itchy right foot may touch ambition, rivalry or the pressure to provide; an itchy left foot, feelings about where he is going that he has not voiced.

Is it a good or bad sign?

In folklore, it depends on the foot. Spiritually, itchy feet are neither good nor bad: they are a nudge to look at your direction and your pace. For many people, they simply mean it is time to ask "where do I want to go?"

Why do my feet itch? The medical side

Itchy feet are common and usually easy to treat. Frequent causes include:

  • Athlete's foot. The NHS describes it as a common fungal infection that causes itchy white patches between the toes, and sometimes sore, flaky or cracked skin on the soles and sides of the feet. It is treated with antifungal creams, sprays or powders from a pharmacy, and is unlikely to clear on its own. See athlete's foot.
  • Dry skin, especially on the heels. See heel pain and corns and calluses for hard, cracked skin.
  • Eczema, including pompholyx, which the NHS says causes itchy blisters on the hands or feet, including the toes and soles. See eczema.
  • Sweaty feet and tight shoes, which keep the skin damp. See sweating and body odour.
  • Contact with an irritant in socks, shoes or washing powder, insect bites, or scabies.
  • Chilblains, itchy or burning red patches on the toes after being in the cold.

Burning, tingling or numb feet are a different sensation, and can come from nerve damage, which is more common in diabetes. See neuropathy and tingling. For pain rather than itch, see foot pain and toe pain.

When to see a doctor

  • See a GP if pharmacy treatment for athlete's foot does not work, if you are in a lot of pain, or if the infection spreads to other parts of the body.
  • See a GP promptly if your foot or leg is hot, painful and red, as the NHS warns this could be a more serious infection.
  • See a GP if itching is severe, does not get better with self-care, keeps coming back, or comes with a new rash or swelling.
  • If you have diabetes, get any sore, cut, colour change or loss of feeling in the feet checked promptly.
  • If you are pregnant, the NHS advises urgent medical help for itchy palms or soles, or itching that is worse at night, as it can be a sign of a liver condition called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. Call your maternity unit or 111.

A gentler way to use this

  • Care for the feet first. Wash and dry between the toes, change socks daily, let shoes air, moisturise dry heels.
  • Ask where you want to go. Write one sentence about the move, change or trip you keep thinking of.
  • Check the pace. Am I dragging my feet, or running? What would my own rhythm be?
  • Take your place. Find one situation where you could stand more firmly, without stepping on anyone.
  • Ground yourself. Stand barefoot for a minute, feel the weight in both feet, and breathe. Choosing the path that fits your deeper wishes, step by step, is the invitation. Our guide to the root chakra looks at grounding in more depth.

If the itch is in your hands, see itchy palms meaning; for itching in general, itchy skin. All the everyday signs are gathered in body signs and their spiritual meaning. If the restlessness comes with fear of what lies ahead, its page may help.

This guide is for reflection and general information. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. See a GP for a hot, red, painful foot, for foot problems with diabetes, and get urgent help for itchy soles in pregnancy.
