Dark circles: spiritual meaning and emotional causes
By the Body Hemi-Sync editorial teamUpdated Editorial policy
What dark circles are
Dark circles are areas of darker or shadowed skin under the eyes. They are very common and usually harmless. The skin there is thin, so blood vessels and the muscle beneath show through more easily, and with age it thins further and the fat pads shift, which creates hollows and bags.
Common causes include heredity, ageing, natural skin pigment, lack of sleep, and allergies such as hay fever, which congest the nose and make people rub their eyes. Eczema, dehydration, smoking and alcohol can add to them. Less often, they come with an illness such as anaemia. Treatment depends on the cause: more sleep, treating an allergy, sun protection, and sometimes cosmetic options from a dermatologist.
The emotional meaning of dark circles
Strongly marked eyes are first of all a sign of fatigue. Spiritually, the shadow under the eye carries that tiredness, and the questions it raises go a little further.
Allergy and dependence
When the circles come with an allergy, the spiritual interpretation reads the allergy as a form of dependence: on a product, a habit, or a person. The question is what you feel you cannot do without, and what that need is costing you.
Iron, and doing
When the circles come with anaemia, a French pun opens the question. A lack of iron, fer, sounds like a lack of faire, of doing. You may feel you cannot act, or that there is nothing left in you to act with.
A limited, colourless life
Behind the tired eyes there is often a sense of being limited. Life feels dull, without colour or brightness, as if it had shrunk around you.
Watched and hemmed in
You may feel spied on, surrounded, even threatened, and not know how to get out of it. The eyes stay on guard, and rest does not come easily.
A gentler way to hold it
- Rest for real. Give your eyes and your body sleep and quiet before you ask anything more of them.
- Notice where you depend. Name one thing or person you feel you cannot do without, and ask what you are looking for there.
- Do one thing for yourself. A small, chosen action can bring back the sense that you can act.
- Bring back some colour. Choose one activity that makes your days feel less narrow.
- Make approval a bonus. Others' praise is welcome. Your well-being can rest on what you think of yourself.
Questions to ask yourself
Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.
- What has been draining my energy lately?
- Where do I feel limited, as if my life had lost its colour?
- Do I feel watched, surrounded or threatened, without seeing a way out?
- What, or whom, do I feel I cannot do without?
- Does my well-being depend on other people's approval?
- What would I do if I trusted that my happiness was mine to build?
“My happiness depends on me. Other people's approval is a bonus, not a condition.”
When to see a doctor
- Dark circles with lasting tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness or a racing heart, which can point to anaemia. A blood test can check.
- Puffiness around the eyes with swollen ankles or foamy urine.
- Swelling, darkening or a bulge around only one eye, especially after an injury or with a change in vision.
- Constant tiredness that does not improve with rest, or that comes with weight loss or low mood.
- If a treatment for allergy, anaemia or another cause is prescribed, do not stop it because of anything you read here.
