In short
Spiritually, armpit pain is often linked to how you meet your oldest and deepest inner forces, whether you hold them back or let them take over, and to staying "under the wing" of others instead of becoming fully yourself.

What armpit pain is

The armpit (axilla) is the hollow under the shoulder, between the side of the chest and the inner arm. It holds many blood vessels, nerves, lymph nodes and sweat glands, which is why pain or a lump there can have many causes.

Common causes of armpit pain include a strained chest or shoulder muscle after exercise or lifting, skin irritation from shaving or deodorant, an ingrown hair, a boil or an infected sweat gland, and lymph nodes that swell while the body fights an infection, for instance after a cold, a cut on the arm or a vaccination. Breast tissue extends towards the armpit, so cyclical breast pain can be felt there too. Less often, pain comes from shingles, a trapped nerve, or the heart. A lump in the armpit is usually a swollen lymph node, a cyst or a fatty lump, but it can occasionally be a sign of breast cancer or lymphoma, so any new lump needs a doctor's examination. Treatment depends on the cause: rest for a strain, antibiotics for some infections, and tests such as an ultrasound when a lump needs checking.

The emotional meaning of armpit pain

Spiritually, the armpit is linked to your oldest and deepest forces, the basic, instinctive energy you were born with, and to how you meet it. Tucked away and rarely shown, it is read as the place where you keep what you have not yet allowed into the light.

Basic emotions held back, or taking over

The spiritual interpretation of armpit pain points to two opposite movements. Either you refuse your most basic emotions and drives, sexuality among them, or they take up all the room. Either way, the balance with your deeper nature is disturbed. You may also find it hard to move forward because you set aside what your inner voice is telling you.

Under someone's wing

The armpit is the place under the arm, and in French, to be "under someone's wing" is to be protected by them. Armpit pain can sit with parents, or other protectors, who want to keep you sheltered there. That shelter can make it hard to tell yourself apart from them and to simply be "me".

Sweating and secrets

When the armpits sweat heavily, it is heard spiritually as emotions overflowing, with nervousness and anguish. In French, "I cannot smell him" means "I cannot stand him". There may be a situation in your life that you cannot stand and that you keep secret, tucked "under your wing". See sweating and body odour for more.

Swollen nodes in the armpit

When the lymph nodes in the armpit swell, the spiritual interpretation speaks of emotions and drives hidden very deep inside. Unable to hold them back for ever, you may find they come out as compulsive behaviour. Behind this there can be a fear of being who you really are, so you conform to others, become dependent on them and lose touch with your own nature. This is a symbolic interpretation only: a swollen node is never "just emotion" and always deserves medical attention. See swollen lymph nodes.

Left side or right side?

Spiritually, the two sides of the body carry two principles that everyone holds, whatever their sex. See the guide to the left and right sides of the body.

  • Right armpit: the masculine principle, linked to action, logic, decisions and the men in your life, such as a father or partner. Pain here may ask whether you are holding back the drive to act and choose your own direction, or still following the path a father figure set for you.
  • Left armpit: the feminine principle, linked to feeling, intuition, tenderness, receiving and the women in your life, such as a mother. Pain here may ask whether you are keeping feelings secret, sheltering under a mother's wing, or struggling to say "I love you" or "I am hurting".

A gentler way to hold it

The closing movement is about coming out of your shell instead of staying hidden.

  • Listen to your inner voice. Note one thing it has been telling you that you keep putting aside.
  • Make room for your basic emotions. Let yourself feel what is there, without shame and without letting it run everything.
  • Step out from under the wing. Make one choice that is yours, even if it differs from what your family expects.
  • Let go of what no longer suits you. If a situation or secret is weighing on you, ask what you could release or say.
  • Trust your natural strength. Let it give you the confidence and drive to move towards what you deeply wish for.

Questions to ask yourself

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

  • Do I refuse my most basic emotions and drives, or do they take up all the room?
  • Which part of my inner voice have I been setting aside?
  • Am I still sheltering under my parents' wing, or someone else's, in a way that keeps me from being myself?
  • Is there a situation I cannot stand, and that I keep secret, close to me?
  • Do I prefer to conform to others rather than show my true personality?
  • What would it feel like to come out of my shell?
Affirmation
“I come out of my shell. I let my natural inner strength express itself and carry me towards what I deeply wish for.”

When to see a doctor

Please seek medical advice if you notice:
  • A new lump in the armpit must be checked by a doctor. Do not assume it is a harmless swollen gland or "just emotion".
  • A lump that is hard, fixed, growing, or still there after two weeks, or a lump with fever, night sweats, weight loss or tiredness you cannot explain.
  • Any change in the breast or nipple, such as a lump, dimpling, discharge or skin change, together with armpit pain or a lump. See a doctor promptly.
  • Pain in the chest that spreads to the left arm, armpit, jaw or back, especially with breathlessness, sweating or nausea. Call emergency services, as this can be a heart attack.
  • A red, hot, swollen, painful area or a boil in the armpit with fever, or pain that keeps getting worse.
  • A painful rash or blisters on one side of the chest or under the arm, which can be shingles.
Breast pain and cysts
Breast pain and cysts are common and usually benign, and a new lump still needs a clinician. They are read alongside over-protection, a bond that broke, and anguish carried for years in place of joy.
Swollen lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes are usually a sign that the body is answering an infection. They are also read as a discouragement you kept to yourself, a life on the defensive, and a responsibility that has become too heavy to carry in silence.
Shoulder pain
Spiritually, shoulder pain is often linked to carrying more than your share. It can point to a sense of being crushed by responsibility, of having no one to back you up, and of driving yourself towards perfection while fearing tomorrow.
Sweating and body odour
Spiritually, sweating and body odour are often linked to emotions held back that overflow through the skin, such as irritation, anger and shame, and to nervousness and a fear of being criticised or rejected.
