Sinusitis: emotional and spiritual meaning
Updated
What sinusitis is
Sinusitis is inflammation of the air-filled spaces in the face, usually the cheeks and the forehead. It often follows a cold or flu. The nose blocks, the face aches, the mucus thickens, and smell fades. Leaning forward can make it worse. Most bouts are viral and settle over two or three weeks with rest, pain relief, saline rinses, and time. A bacterial infection is less common. Antibiotics, if they are used, are a clinician's decision. A one-sided face, a swollen eye, or a severe headache is a reason to be seen the same day.
The emotional meaning of sinusitis
The block is in the nose, and the sinuses of the face are the place. This infection sits with powerlessness toward a person or a situation. You cannot stand them. In French, la moutarde me monte au nez: the mustard rises to my nose. It is the phrase for anger that has reached the face. Picture strong mustard in the nose. It chokes. It burns.
You may also sense a danger or a threat that brings fear up inside. The danger can be real or imagined. The result feels the same. "This smells bad for me." A truth is hidden or bent, and that is uncomfortable. Are you in a place with no way out, a dead end? Do you want a child and feel that it is impossible, or do you already have one and want to feel closer, more joined to them?
Something does not smell right. Something is shady. Things are being done without your knowing. You resist what would feed you, because you refuse to let air in through the nose. Creativity drops, and the work tilts toward the purely rational. Irritation is high, because you feel limited, with no margin. You feel forced, squeezed like a lemon.
Where the squeeze is
The reading hears two sinuses as two kinds of pressure.
- The maxillary sinuses, in the cheeks, sit with living space. You feel compressed in the room your life takes up.
- The frontal sinuses, in the forehead, sit with time. You feel compressed in the hours.
There is a hierarchy in the scene. Because you feel submitted, and you receive less information than the people who decide, you have the impression of enduring, of sniffing the wind without the elements of the situation. You sense things, and you have no confirmation of what you sense, and that bothers you deeply. Instead of listening to an inner voice, old patterns of thought dictate the conduct. Anguish, and the fear of not being loved, get pushed down. You feel taken by the throat. Pris à la gorge is the French for being cornered, with no air and no choice.
Powerlessness leads into hiding, into illusion and revolt. There is the impression of having wasted a life. The sinusitis "bursts" at the moment you also cannot go on, and you are ready to burst emotionally. You can no longer live inside the safe, organised, rigid life you built. You have had enough of living according to other people, whom you use as life rafts. New landmarks are needed, and an authority of your own. The message to hear is that love is around you, and that it can be breathed in, deep.
A gentler way to hold it
- Speak about yourself. Constant compromise can stop.
- Trust the inner voice for what is good for you.
- Let softness take a place in the life.
- Trust yourself. The reading pictures a light you can finally see.
- Keep the medical plan. Time, pain relief, and a clinician if the face, the eye or the fever worsens, stay in place.
Questions to ask yourself
Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.
- Who or what can I not stand, to the point that it burns in the nose?
- What smells wrong, or is being done without my knowing?
- Where am I squeezed, in my space or in my time, with no room to move?
- Am I sniffing the wind in a hierarchy where I am not told enough to trust what I sense?
- Which anguish, or which fear of not being loved, am I pushing down?
- Where am I using other people as life rafts, and ready to burst?
“I speak about myself. I trust my inner voice, and I let softness have a place.”
When to see a doctor
- Swelling around an eye, a severe headache, a stiff neck, or confusion. Seek urgent care.
- Symptoms on one side only, a high fever, or vision that changes.
- A blocked face that is worsening after ten days, or that lasts more than three weeks.
- Sinus pain in someone with a weakened immune system, or in a child who is drowsy or not drinking.
- Asthma or breathing that is getting worse.
- Frequent bouts. A clinician can look for a cause rather than leaving each one to pass.
