Fibroids: emotional and spiritual meaning

The emotional and spiritual meaning of uterine fibroids: a benign growth in the womb, and a hurt, a secret, or a creative life that was never given words.

Updated

In short
A fibroid is a benign growth of fibrous tissue, most often in the womb. It is read as a shock around home, femininity, or a creative life that stayed unspoken.

What fibroids are

A fibroid is a benign tumour made of fibrous and muscular tissue. Most grow in the womb. They are common, especially through the forties, and many cause no trouble at all. Others bring heavy periods, pain, or a sense of pressure. They are not a decision about whether you should have had a child. Treatment, when it is needed, ranges from leaving them alone to medicines or an operation. A clinician makes that call from the scan and the bleeding, not from a story about the past.

The emotional meaning of fibroids

The womb is read as the seat of motherhood, femininity, and sexuality, and so of the home and the family. Fibroids are placed next to an emotional shock in that field. The questions are concrete. Were you wounded by a partner, hit by a hard word or a hard event, and never able to say so in a way that restored the peace? Are shame, guilt, or a long confusion still living there, perhaps from a first sexual experience or from a pregnancy that stopped? If the shock was abuse, the step is safety and help. The growth is not the proof that you failed to manage it.

There can be an inner emptiness that gets filled in a surface way, by doing what other people do, while your own needs stay in flight. Resentment towards someone who hurt you may still be fed. Questions about having a child, or about not having one, may be live. So may the feeling that you carry other people and feed them because you have become indispensable. A wish for renewal, and a refusal to let your creative, adventurous side show, can sit in the same season.

The forties, and what was not born

Fibroids often appear around the time a woman realises the childbearing years are narrowing. You may already have decided not to have a child, or not to have another. Guilt about the number of children, or about none, is a feeling, spiritually, to look at. It does not assemble the tissue. The same pages speak of a baby imagined with a particular partner and never conceived, and of a project you spent a long time bringing to the point of life, which then did not take shape. The image offered is a fibroid as that unborn thing, transposed into the body. Read it as an image of a grief or a plan that never got its day. The mass itself is muscle and fibre. It is not a child, and it is not a verdict that it is too late for a life.

What the spiritual interpretation does ask is speech. With a partner, or with someone in the family, say what you feel. Stop keeping a knowledge that only you have carried. Shame and confusion can be met with the fact that you acted from what you knew then. Creativity, turned towards what you actually love, is the direction that replaces going over the past.

A gentler way to hold it

  • Say one thing you have kept from the person it concerns.
  • Separate a real grief about a child, or a project, from the scan in front of you. Both can be true. They are not the same fact.
  • A wish that is still yours can have a form that is not a pregnancy.

Questions to ask yourself

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

  • What hurt in my closest life have I never found a way to say?
  • Where am I feeding everyone else and leaving my own wish unnamed?
  • What creative impulse have I been refusing, while calling it too late?
Affirmation
“I can speak what I have carried, and I can turn towards the life that is still mine.”

When to see a doctor

Please seek medical advice if you notice:
  • Heavy bleeding, pain, pressure on the bladder, or a swelling you can feel needs a doctor.
  • Bleeding after the menopause needs prompt assessment.
  • A fibroid is usually benign.
  • Surgery, a hormone medicine, or watching and waiting is a clinical decision.
  • If a past hurt was an assault or you are not safe, get to safety and ask for help.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is tissue like the womb lining growing outside the womb. The spiritual interpretation sits with questions about a mother, a nest, and whether you have a place of your own.
Menopause
Menopause is the end of periods, often with hot flushes, sweats and a body that feels unfamiliar. It is read as a pause for taking stock, and as a femininity that wants room beside the years of doing and providing.
Menstrual pain
Menstrual pain is often read as a sign of tension with our own femininity. Guilt, anger at the constraints placed on women, perfectionism and emotions held back may make the cycle harder to live.
