Cystic fibrosis: emotional and spiritual meaning
Updated
What cystic fibrosis is
Cystic fibrosis, also called mucoviscidosis, is an inherited disease. A fault in how salt and water move across cell surfaces makes mucus abnormally thick. It affects the lungs and the digestive tract above all, including the enzymes the pancreas secretes. Breathing becomes hard, infections recur, and food is poorly digested unless enzymes are replaced. It is serious, it is lifelong, and modern care, including physiotherapy, antibiotics, nutrition and newer modulator drugs, has changed its course. It is not an attitude, and it is not produced by a way of thinking.
The emotional reading below is a complement for the inner life of a person who is carrying a heavy, sticky, stuck feeling. It does not explain the gene, and it does not lighten the mucus. Pancreatitis is a different illness of the same gland. The lungs are the other organ this entry names.
The emotional meaning of cystic fibrosis
A rigid way of thinking, and mental patterns you will not leave, are read as a refusal to move forward in life. You clung to so many old ideas that you did not follow the current. The pains you feel paralyse you. You are discouraged. Nothing in the life works. You may have the impression of always having held back, from doing or from saying, afraid of the consequences. That is why the arms and the legs are often brought in. The arms stand for the fear of taking hold of life's situations. The legs stand for the fear of advancing.
You complain. You pity yourself, and you would like other people to do the same. You think life has nothing to bring you. You feel the need to over-protect yourself. You can find yourself at the heart of quarrels you wanted no part in, and you want to withdraw. There is something you feel you absolutely must stop the body from absorbing, a harmful substance, or you must keep from contact with certain people or situations that would enter your "bubble" and put you in danger. You control and resist your emotions and your environment so much that you have to eat without ceasing, to fill a void that never fills.
A gentler way to hold it
Opening more to life, and letting old ideas go, is the inner direction. Spontaneity, an inner voice, and the strength to state your needs are what let energy circulate and a balance return. That is a way of living beside a real disease. It is not a method for making the disease leave.
- Keep the specialist plan. Enzymes, airway clearance and medicines are the treatment. A reading is not.
- Name one old idea you are done carrying. Rigidity is the inner picture, not the cause of the gene.
- Ask where protection became a wall. A bubble can be safety and a prison at the same time.
- Notice the arms and the legs. Taking hold, and moving forward, are the two fears this entry pairs.
- Look at the void you feed. Eating without ceasing is read as trying to fill something that food cannot fill. It is not a reason to restrict a prescribed diet.
- Let one sentence out. Held-back speech is part of the picture of held-back flow.
Questions to ask yourself
Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.
- Which old idea am I clinging to so tightly that I am no longer moving with life?
- Where have I held back an action or a sentence because I feared the consequences?
- Do I want other people to pity me the way I pity myself?
- What am I trying to stop from entering my "bubble"?
- Where do my arms refuse to take hold of a situation, or my legs refuse to advance?
- What would one spontaneous step, guided from the inside, look like?
“I can loosen an old idea. I have the strength to state what I need, and I let energy move again.”
When to see a doctor
- Cystic fibrosis is diagnosed by tests, often in infancy, and is followed in a specialist centre. Do not change physiotherapy, enzymes, antibiotics or modulators on the basis of a reading.
- New or worse breathlessness, a flare of cough, coughing blood, or a drop in weight. Contact the CF team promptly.
- Severe abdominal pain, a blocked bowel, or greasy stools and poor weight gain.
- Fever, chest pain, or confusion. Seek urgent care.
- A relative newly found to carry the gene. Genetic counselling is the right door, not an emotional interpretation.
- This illness is inherited. Feelings do not cause it, and letting go of an idea does not replace treatment.
