Ulcerative colitis: emotional and spiritual meaning
Updated
What ulcerative colitis is
Ulcerative colitis is a long inflammation of the rectum and the colon, the large bowel. It often shows as diarrhoea alternating with constipation, and the stool contains blood. Flares of different strength give way to calmer stretches that can last a long time. The immune cells of the gut are involved. Who or what you feel attacked by is a fair question. It is not the cause of the inflammation. Crohn's disease is a related illness and affects the gut differently. A specialist tells them apart. Treatment calms the flare and tries to keep the next one away.
The emotional meaning of ulcerative colitis
Spiritually, this is someone poisoning themselves from the inside with tensions they inflict on themselves. Something in the family will not be digested, and it cannot be got rid of. People cling, and you cannot bear it any more.
The step is to take your place and to position yourself towards other people, especially in the family. Needs can be stated. Choices can be your own. The blood and the pain still belong with a doctor while that place is being made.
A gentler way to hold it
- Name the family fact you cannot digest. Say it to the person it concerns, or on paper first.
- State one need that would give you room.
- A flare is a medical event. Your place in the family is a separate piece of work.
Questions to ask yourself
Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.
- Who or what do I feel attacked by?
- What in my family can I not digest, and cannot put down?
- Where do I need to state a need so that I have a place of my own?
“I can take my place, say what I need, and let my choices be my own.”
When to see a doctor
- Blood in the stool, severe diarrhoea, fever, or pain needs a doctor promptly. Heavy bleeding, fainting, or a belly that is rigid needs emergency care.
- Ulcerative colitis is a long inflammatory illness. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because a family story seemed to explain the flare.
- Weight loss and symptoms that keep returning belong with a specialist.
