Gastritis: emotional and spiritual meaning
Updated
What gastritis is
Gastritis is inflammation of the lining of the stomach, the place where digestion begins. It can be sudden or long-lasting. Alcohol, certain painkillers, infection, and bile washing upwards are common medical reasons. Pain, nausea, and a burn high in the belly are the usual signs. Treatment follows the cause. A reading of irritation does not replace a look for that cause.
The emotional meaning of gastritis
The stomach is where the world starts to be taken in. Where the lining is inflamed, spiritually, there is irritation and anger towards something, or someone, that will not be digested. Things are not happening as you wanted. People are not acting as you wished. There can be the sense of having been deceived, or of being stuck because someone else stayed silent.
What the digestion has absorbed, in this language, is a reality that disturbs you at the deepest level. Insecurity asks what is coming next. The world feels as if it could collapse at any moment. The image is a watchdog, constantly alert for danger, unable to lie down.
The only power the spiritual interpretation is willing to grant is power over yourself. Other people, and the situation, stay as they are. Expectations can be turned towards what is good in the day, instead of towards the disaster you are braced for. Worry, here, is the extra acid. Enjoying one moment is the step that is actually available.
A gentler way to hold it
- Name the person or the fact you keep trying to swallow.
- Notice the watchdog. Ask what would be enough safety for the next hour.
- One expectation you can drop is enough to start. The lining still deserves its own care.
Questions to ask yourself
Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.
- What am I trying to digest that will not go down?
- Where am I on guard, waiting for everything to fall apart?
- Which expectation could I loosen without abandoning myself?
“I can meet this day as it is, and keep my strength for what is mine to change.”
When to see a doctor
- Vomiting blood, black stools, severe pain, unexplained weight loss, or pain that will not settle needs a doctor promptly.
- Do not stop a prescribed acid medicine, and do not assume every burn is only stress.
- An infection or a drug can inflame the lining and still needs treating.
