## What inflammation is

Inflammation is the body's local response to injury or to a harmful agent such as a germ. Blood flow and immune cells increase in the affected area, which produces the four classic signs: redness, heat, pain and swelling. In the short term it is protective and part of healing, as after a cut, a sprain or a sore throat.

Many conditions are named after it, with the ending "-itis": [**gastritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/gastritis), [**bronchitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/bronchitis), [**tonsillitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/tonsillitis), [**sinusitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/sinusitis), [**conjunctivitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/eyes-and-ears/conjunctivitis), [**dermatitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/dermatitis), [**bursitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/bursitis), [**appendicitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/appendicitis), [**diverticulitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/diverticulitis), [**hepatitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/liver-and-gallbladder/hepatitis), [**pancreatitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/pancreas/pancreatitis) and [**cystitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/kidneys/cystitis). When inflammation goes on for months, as in [**rheumatoid arthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rheumatoid-arthritis), [**ulcerative colitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/ulcerative-colitis), [**psoriasis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/psoriasis) or [**lupus**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/lupus), the immune system keeps attacking healthy tissue. Doctors can measure it with blood tests such as CRP, and treat the cause with rest, cold, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids or other targeted treatments.

## The emotional meaning of inflammation

Spiritually, inflammation in the body mirrors an inflammation inside. Something or someone has set you alight: you are fired up, enraged, and your body is showing it.

### Seeing red

The language of everyday speech fits well: being "red with anger", "boiling". The spiritual interpretation links this heat to [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger), often tied symbolically to the liver and gallbladder, whose "fire" is said to run too high. The question is which part of your life makes you boil. Left unspoken, that anger can turn into [**guilt**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt), and guilt itself may already be part of what keeps the fire going.

### Holding on to what has had its time

Inflammation is read as a sign that you are living through a situation you do not want to let go of. You resist change and fight it angrily. Something you once needed to support you and help you move forward may no longer need to be there. That contradiction, between what was and what is, is what inflames you. It irritates and exasperates you.

### Feeling hemmed in

You may feel cornered and limited, with a life that has become too rigid, too structured. There is little room left for what is spontaneous in you.

### Old hurts and losses

It is worth checking whether an old difficulty, perhaps in your intimate or sexual life, was pushed down and never resolved. Or whether you have lived a loss you have not accepted, which still makes you very irritable. Seeing it clearly can give you a new and kinder understanding of it. The page on [**grief**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/grief) may help here.

### You against the others

Finally, inflammation can point to a sharp inner conflict between who you are and the people around you. It invites you to look at your beliefs, and at how much room you give yourself to be different.

## Where in the body

The part of the body that is inflamed adds information. The stomach, the airways, a joint or the skin each carry their own meaning, so the page for that specific "-itis" goes further. If an infection is behind the inflammation, see [**infections**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/whole-body/infections) as well.

## A gentler way to hold it

The closing movement is about allowing yourself to be who you are, even when that sets you apart.

- **Name what makes you boil.** Write down, in one line, the person or situation that has been heating you up.
- **Let go of an old support.** Ask what once helped you and is no longer needed, and what it would be like to set it down.
- **Make room for loss.** If a loss is still raw, give it time and words, alone or with someone you trust.
- **Say what you think.** Practise giving your opinion, calmly, even when it differs from those around you.
- **Trust yourself.** Choose one small, spontaneous thing this week, outside your usual structure.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What in my life makes me "see red" or keeps me at boiling point?
- Which situation am I refusing to let go of, even though it has had its time?
- Where do I feel cornered, limited or held in a life that is too rigid?
- Is there a loss I have not accepted, and that still makes me irritable?
- Has some old difficulty, perhaps in my intimate life, been pushed aside without being resolved?
- Where do I hold back my opinion because it differs from the people around me?

***Affirmation ***

> “I allow myself to be different. I say what I think and trust myself to live more spontaneously.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Redness, heat and swelling that spread quickly, especially with fever, red streaks or feeling very unwell. This can be a serious infection. Get medical help the same day.
- A swollen, hot, painful joint, particularly with fever. Get medical help the same day.
- A hot, swollen, painful calf. This can be a blood clot. Get urgent medical help.
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Call emergency services.
- Joint pain and stiffness that last for weeks, morning stiffness, ongoing tiredness, rashes or weight loss. A doctor can check for an inflammatory or autoimmune condition with blood tests.
- If you take anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids or other long-term treatment, do not stop or change the dose because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Gastritis**

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. It is read as irritation and anger towards something, or someone, you cannot digest.

**Rheumatoid arthritis**

Rheumatoid arthritis inflames many joints at once, as the immune system attacks the tissue there. It is read as a deep self-criticism, and a resentment that never found a way out.

[Rheumatoid arthritis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rheumatoid-arthritis)

**Hepatitis**

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver with medical causes that need a doctor. In the emotional reading it sits with anger, rancour and a difficulty telling harm from what is simply hard, while the body asks for rest.

[Hepatitis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/liver-and-gallbladder/hepatitis)

**Bronchitis**

Bronchitis is inflammation of the tubes that carry air into the lungs. It is read as anger and unspoken words in a life where it has become hard to breathe freely.

[Bronchitis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/bronchitis)

**Tonsillitis**

[Tonsillitis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/tonsillitis)

**Dermatitis**

Spiritually, dermatitis is often linked to a muffled anger that rises in the skin when someone gets under it. It sits with a need for touch that is not met, or with contact that is imposed and unwanted, and with the difficulty of setting limits.

[Dermatitis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/dermatitis)

**Infections**

Spiritually, infections are often linked to an inner conflict you have not voiced, irritation and worry that have piled up until "I can't take any more", and a part of life that needs cleaning out.
