**In short**

Spiritually, fatigue is often linked to feeling emptied inside, to a lack of love for the life you are living, and to energy scattered across too many struggles at once, until motivation and joy run low.

## What fatigue is

Fatigue is a lasting feeling of tiredness, weakness or lack of energy that makes ordinary tasks feel harder. It is very common and usually has an ordinary cause: too little or poor-quality sleep, long working hours, caring for others, [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress), a recent infection, alcohol, or being less active. It can also be a sign of an illness, such as [**anaemia**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/anaemia), an [**underactive thyroid**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/thyroid/hypothyroidism), [**diabetes**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/blood-sugar/diabetes), sleep apnoea, [**depression**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/depression), coeliac disease or a long-lasting infection, or a side effect of a medicine.

A GP can talk through your sleep, work and mood, and may suggest blood tests to look for a treatable cause. When fatigue lasts many months, gets much worse after small efforts and does not lift with rest, it can be [**chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/whole-body/chronic-fatigue-syndrome), which has its own page.

## The emotional meaning of fatigue

Spiritually, fatigue is the feeling of being flat, emptied out inside. The question it raises is about love: how much you love the life you are leading at the moment, and where your motivation has gone.

### Energy spent on fighting

Worries, [**fears**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear), sorrows and old inner hurts can push you to struggle, to resist and to refuse certain situations. Each fight takes energy. Instead of looking for what your difficulties have in common, you may spread your strength across too many directions at once, until you despair of finding any solution at all.

### Weariness with life

Fatigue is linked to a kind of [**weariness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/weariness) with life itself, an inner tiredness that comes from having to fight just to keep moving forward. You may feel beaten down, incompetent, lacking, without interest in anything. You may no longer know which way to turn, because the joy of living has gone thin. When this weighs for a long time, [**depression**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/depression) is possible, and it deserves real care.

### Boredom and unanswered questions

[**Boredom**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/boredom) can feel like living in the dark. You may be full of questions about the things in life that make no sense, with no one to help you find answers. Carrying them alone is tiring in itself.

### Old effort from childhood

Sometimes the tiredness goes back a long way. As a child, you may have spent a lot of energy trying to work out who you were supposed to be like, for example when your parents did not match the roles you expected of them. That effort to find your own shape can leave a deep, quiet fatigue.

Whatever its source, this tiredness is both moral and physical. When it comes with a life that has become all duty and no rest, it can also be a sign of [**burnout**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/burnout).

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Accept the pause.** Your body may be asking for a stop: time to rest, take stock and fill up again.
- **Gather your energy.** Notice where you are fighting on many fronts, and choose one thing to face at a time.
- **Let go of the past.** Each time your mind goes back to old struggles, return to the present moment. Each moment brings the energy it needs.
- **Do what you love.** Make room, even for ten minutes, for something you enjoy for its own sake. Pleasure is a source of energy.
- **Ask your questions out loud.** Share what puzzles or worries you with someone you trust, so you are not carrying it alone.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Do I love the life I am living right now, or am I only getting through it?
- Where has my motivation gone?
- Which worries, fears or old hurts am I fighting against every day?
- Am I spreading my energy across too many fronts, instead of looking for what my difficulties have in common?
- Which questions am I carrying alone, with no one to help me answer them?
- What do I still love doing, and when did I last do it?

***Affirmation ***

> “I allow myself to stop, to take stock and to rest. I live this moment, and I let what I love bring my energy back.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Tiredness that lasts more than a few weeks, or that rest and sleep do not improve.
- Tiredness with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, a fever that comes and goes, or swollen glands.
- Tiredness with breathlessness, chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or fainting. Seek urgent care for chest pain or fainting.
- Tiredness with pale skin, heavy periods or blood in your stool, which can point to anaemia.
- Tiredness with great thirst, passing a lot of urine, feeling cold, weight gain, or loud snoring and stopping breathing at night.
- Tiredness that started after a new medicine. Do not stop the medicine on your own; ask the prescriber.
- Tiredness with a low mood, loss of interest in everything, or thoughts of harming yourself or that life is not worth living. Speak to a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if you are in danger.

## **Related conditions**

**Insomnia**

Insomnia is often read as a fear of letting go. Keeping the mind busy can be a way of staying in control, and of not having to hear what is going on inside, especially when rest itself feels undeserved.

**Anaemia**

Anaemia is a lack of haemoglobin, so the blood carries less oxygen and the body feels drained. It is read as a joy, a love and a strength that have thinned, and as a life lived in "yes, but".

**Fibromyalgia**

Fibromyalgia is widespread muscle pain with fatigue, poor sleep and morning stiffness. It is read as perfectionism pushed past its limit, a moral pain that follows you, and responsibilities you never really chose.

**Hypothyroidism**

Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid, with real physical causes and a treatment that replaces the missing hormone. It is read alongside discouragement, a creativity that has gone quiet, and a situation you do not know how to meet.

**Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)**

Spiritually, ME/CFS is often linked to high demands on yourself, a true self set aside to meet the expectations of others, and a harsh inner voice, with an invitation to live more from the heart and with far more kindness towards yourself.
