# **Lupus: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of lupus: deep discouragement, turning against yourself, the beaten wolf, and finding your inner power again.

**In short**

Spiritually, lupus is often linked to deep discouragement and to turning against yourself, with guilt and shame that eat away inside and the sense of being a beaten wolf with no way out. The invitation is to learn to love yourself again and to reclaim your inner power.

## What lupus is

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease: the immune system, which normally defends the body, attacks its own tissues and causes inflammation. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, blood, heart, lungs and brain. It is much more common in women, usually starting between the ages of 15 and 45, and in people of African, Caribbean and Asian descent.

There are different forms. **Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)** can affect many organs. **Cutaneous lupus**, including discoid lupus, mainly affects the skin, with red, scaly or scarring patches, often on sun-exposed areas. Common signs of SLE include extreme tiredness, joint pain and swelling, a rash across the cheeks and nose (the "butterfly rash"), sensitivity to sunlight, mouth ulcers and fevers. Symptoms tend to come in flares.

There is no cure, but treatment usually controls lupus well and protects the organs. Care is led by a specialist (a rheumatologist, often with a dermatologist or kidney specialist) and commonly includes antimalarial medicines such as hydroxychloroquine, steroids for flares, other immune-suppressing medicines, regular blood and urine tests, and careful sun protection. These medicines are usually taken for the long term.

## The emotional meaning of lupus

Spiritually, lupus is read as a body turned against itself, echoing a person who has turned against themselves. This is a way of hearing the illness, not its cause: lupus comes from the immune system, genes, hormones and triggers such as sunlight, not from a feeling.

### Deep discouragement

Lupus sits with a profound discouragement, sometimes with [**hate**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/hate) or [**shame**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/shame) directed at yourself. You may have reached the point of giving up, of laying down your arms, because no way out and no solution seems possible. Frustration at your own powerlessness can come with it.

### Guilt that eats away

The unease often has its root in a deep emotional [**guilt**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt) that invades and gnaws from the inside. You see yourself as a bad person who does not deserve to be happy, and you would rather punish yourself than stand up for yourself.

### The beaten wolf

*Lupus* is Latin for "wolf". Spiritually, the word is heard as the image of a beaten wolf: someone who has been through so much, who "has had more than enough", that they cannot take any more. The scars of those years are still there. You feel without power, and you want to be left alone. Read [**loneliness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/loneliness) if this withdrawal feels familiar.

### Closing the door to love

When life feels this heavy, death can start to look like an escape, and it becomes hard to let in love or forgiveness, for yourself or for others. If you recognise this, it deserves to be heard by someone now: a doctor, a therapist, a crisis line, or emergency services if you are in danger. Help exists, and needing it is not a weakness.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Relearn how to love yourself.** This is an important step. Start with how you speak to yourself on a bad day.
- **Ask for help.** Inwardly, through prayer or quiet reflection, and outwardly, from people trained to support you: a psychologist, a support group, your medical team.
- **Choose standing up over self-punishment.** Notice one situation where you blame yourself and practise saying what you need instead.
- **Honour the scars.** What you went through was real. Acknowledging it is different from being defined by it.
- **Let the young wolf out.** In French, a *jeune loup* is an ambitious young person ready to make their mark. Reconnect with your inner power and let your ambitions, talents and full potential be seen.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Do I feel, deep down, that I am a bad person who does not deserve to be happy?
- Do I punish myself rather than stand up for myself?
- Where have I given up because I can see no way out?
- What have I been through that has left me with scars I still carry?
- Do I push people away when I most need them?
- Who could help me, inside myself or around me, to start treating myself more kindly?

***Affirmation ***

> “I am learning to love myself again. I reconnect with my inner power and let my talents be seen.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Chest pain, shortness of breath, a seizure, sudden confusion, or weakness on one side of the body. Call emergency services.
- Fever, especially if you take medicines that lower your immunity. Contact your medical team the same day.
- Swollen legs or ankles, foamy urine, blood in the urine or high blood pressure, which can be signs that lupus is affecting the kidneys.
- A new flare, a rash after sun exposure, painful joints, mouth ulcers or unusual tiredness.
- Planning a pregnancy, or becoming pregnant. Lupus pregnancies need specialist care.
- Lupus is usually treated for the long term. Do not stop or change your medicines, including hydroxychloroquine or steroids, because of anything you read here. Stopping steroids suddenly can be dangerous.
- Feeling hopeless, or having thoughts of death or of harming yourself. Speak to your doctor, call a crisis line, or call emergency services if you are in danger.

## **Related conditions**

**Rheumatoid arthritis**

Rheumatoid arthritis inflames many joints at once, as the immune system attacks the tissue there. It is read as a deep self-criticism, and a resentment that never found a way out.

**Kidney problems**

Kidney problems are often read as fear that has not been said, and as old emotions the filter has stopped clearing. The kidneys are called the seat of fear.

**Rash**

Spiritually, a rash is often linked to inner tension that has built up until it breaks through the skin, like a volcano. It can sit with frustration at delays, with shame about having gone too far, and with a wish to withdraw so that nobody comes close.

**Fatigue**

Spiritually, fatigue is often linked to feeling emptied inside, to a lack of love for the life you are living, and to energy scattered across too many struggles at once, until motivation and joy run low.
