**In short**

Spiritually, itchy skin is often linked to impatience and unmet desires, to an irritation that has slipped under the skin, and to the feeling that life is not moving the way or at the speed you want.

## What itchy skin is

Itchy skin, or pruritus, is an uncomfortable sensation that makes you want to scratch. It can affect one small area or the whole body, with or without a visible rash.

The most common cause is dry skin, especially in winter, with age, or after hot showers and harsh soaps. Other frequent causes are [**eczema**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/eczema), [**hives**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/hives), [**psoriasis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/psoriasis), contact with an irritant or allergen, insect bites, scabies, and fungal infections such as [**athlete's foot**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/legs-and-feet/athletes-foot). Some medicines cause itching, and so can pregnancy. Itching all over without a rash is less common and can sometimes be linked to the liver, kidneys, thyroid, iron deficiency or, rarely, a blood condition, so it deserves a check-up if it persists.

Care starts with gentle habits: lukewarm water, mild unperfumed products, a moisturiser applied often, loose cotton clothing, and short nails to limit damage from scratching. A pharmacist can suggest a cream or an antihistamine. A GP can look for the cause and treat it when itching lasts, spreads or comes with other symptoms.

## The emotional meaning of itchy skin

Spiritually, an itch is an irritation: something that has slipped under the skin and bothers you in one particular place, or irritates you from the inside. The skin is the largest sensory organ, the place where you meet the world, so the itch speaks about what is rubbing you up the wrong way.

### Unmet desires and impatience

Itching is linked to feeling thwarted by desires that are not satisfied. A certain [**impatience**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/impatience) sets in, and you scratch, and scratch, and scratch. Each scratch can be heard as a sign that the situations of your life are not going the way you want, that you feel cut off from the pleasure and enjoyment you would like to find again. Things are not moving fast enough for you.

### Blaming others, or limiting yourself

You may feel irritated and dissatisfied with your life, with the impression that other people are the cause. You may feel you are not in control, and resent authority in all its forms. The spiritual interpretation turns the question around gently: is it rather you who are holding yourself back, by keeping your own emotions at arm's length? Happiness is often sought too far away, when it is within reach.

### When it goes down to the blood

Life may be pushing you to make quick changes, with insecurity and remorse that follow. What is itching you so much that you scratch until the skin breaks? Symbolically, it suggests a need to look deep inside for the answers. Is it that you do not have the answer, or that you do not want to see it?

### Family and belonging

Identifying the "cause" of the irritation can lead back to someone close: your father, your mother, or someone you love. The itch may also ask about your place within your family. Do you feel you belong to it, or rather that you are separate and have to look for love elsewhere? Have you lost touch with your own feelings?

## Itchy palms and feet

Where the itch appears adds nuance. When it covers the whole body, it touches your whole being, and intensely. When it stays in one place, the meaning of that part of the body gives the clue. On the scalp, for instance, it points to disorder in your thoughts, and to relying on the head for answers that the heart could give.

- **Itchy palms.** The hands are about taking, giving and receiving, and about putting ideas into action. An itch in the palms may ask what you are impatient to grasp or to do, and what you are not allowing yourself to receive. In French, a hurt palm also plays on *se faire paumer*, to get caught or lost: a fear of losing your way, emotionally or socially.
- **Itchy feet.** The feet are your contact with the ground, your stability as you move towards a goal, and the position you take in life. An itch here may point to impatience about a direction, to wanting to move on, or to unease about where you stand. The feet are also linked with your relationship with your mother.
- **Itchy left hand or left side.** The left hand is the hand of the heart, the one that receives. The left side relates to the feminine principle in everyone: feelings, intuition, tenderness, and the ability to receive, especially love.
- **Itchy right hand or right side.** The right hand stands for will, action and affirmation. The right side relates to the masculine principle in everyone: logic, decisions, work and the direction you choose.

## In folklore

In popular belief, not medicine and not the spiritual interpretation above, an itchy palm is a money omen. A common version says an itchy right palm means money is coming and an itchy left palm means money is going out, though some regions say the opposite, and itchy feet are said to foretell a journey. These are superstitions, and they predict nothing.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Welcome the message.** Instead of fighting the itch alone, ask what it is drawing your attention to.
- **Stop running from what you live.** You do not need to leave a situation to find relief from it; you can look at it first.
- **Look at what you react to.** If an allergy is involved, notice what, or who, you seem to be reacting to.
- **Go to the heart, not only the head.** Let your feelings, and not just your reasoning, help you find the answer.
- **Take back your place.** Claim your space in your family and your life, and let your creativity express itself.
- **Trust yourself to change.** See what needs to change in your life, and take the first step with confidence in yourself.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What is "getting under my skin" at the moment?
- Which of my desires feel blocked, and where am I impatient for things to move faster?
- Do I blame others, or authority, for what is not going my way?
- Am I cutting myself off from my own emotions?
- Is this irritation linked to my father, my mother or someone I love?
- Do I feel that I belong in my family, or that I have to look for love elsewhere?

***Affirmation ***

> “I listen to what this itch has to tell me. I take back my place, I let my creativity flow, and I trust myself to see what needs to change.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Itching with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Call emergency services.
- Itching all over the body with no obvious rash, especially with weight loss, night sweats, tiredness, yellow skin or eyes, or dark urine.
- Itching on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet during pregnancy, often worse at night. Contact your midwife or maternity unit the same day, as it can be a liver condition called obstetric cholestasis.
- Intense itching that is worse at night, especially between the fingers, or that other people at home also have, which can be scabies.
- Skin that is broken, hot, weeping or crusting from scratching, which can be infected.
- Itching that lasts more than two weeks, keeps you from sleeping, or does not improve with self-care.
- Do not stop a prescribed cream, antihistamine or other treatment because of anything you read here.
