**In short**

Blackheads are pores plugged with oil and dead skin that darken at the surface. Spiritually, they are read as the outward sign of feeling "not clean" or not worth much, a quiet shame that makes contact with others harder.

## What blackheads are

A blackhead (an open comedo) is a small plug in a pore. Oil from the skin, called sebum, mixes with dead skin cells and builds up in the opening of a hair follicle. Because the top of the plug is open to the air, it darkens and looks black. It is not dirt. A whitehead is the same plug with a closed top.

Blackheads are one of the mildest forms of [**acne**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/acne). They are very common in teenagers and in many adults. They gather where the skin makes the most oil: the nose, chin and forehead, and sometimes the chest and back. Hormones, genes, heavy cosmetics and some medicines all play a part. Scrubbing harder does not clear them and can irritate the skin. Pharmacy products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help, and a GP can prescribe stronger creams such as retinoids. Squeezing blackheads can push the plug deeper and leave marks or an infection.

## The emotional meaning of blackheads

Spiritually, blackheads are read as the outward sign of an inner feeling: being dirty, "not clean", not worth very much. Low self-esteem comes up to the surface of the skin in small dark points that seem impossible to wash away.

### Not clean, not worth much

The plug in a blackhead is oil and skin, not grime. Yet many people are ashamed of blackheads as if they proved they were unclean. Symbolically, that confusion says something. The question is whether you carry an older, quieter belief that something about you is not clean enough or not good enough, and whether your skin simply gives that belief a place to show.

### Shame and contact

When you are ashamed of yourself, meeting other people becomes harder. You may avoid looking at people, avoid being looked at, or keep encounters short. Blackheads sit mostly on the face, the part we show first, so they can feed exactly that hesitation. [**Shame**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/shame) and distance then strengthen each other.

### Abandonment, loneliness and failure

Underneath, there can be a heavy sense of [**abandonment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/abandonment), of [**loneliness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/loneliness), or of having failed. These feelings colour the way you see yourself, and the way you see yourself shapes how you imagine others see you.

### Black thoughts

In French, gloomy thoughts are *pensées noires*, "black thoughts", and blackheads are *points noirs*, "black points". The two are heard together. The small, scattered dark points on the skin echo the small, constant dark things you think about yourself. Noticing those thoughts is the first step towards replacing them.

## Blackheads on the nose: spiritual meaning

The nose is where blackheads are most common, simply because it holds many oil glands. Spiritually, the face is your calling card. It is the part of you that meets the world first, and it carries your image and your identity. When you put yourself down, criticise yourself or feel that nobody loves you, that unease is pictured on the skin of the face.

The nose, in the middle of it, is linked to instinct and to the way you steer your life. In French, someone with *le nez fin*, a fine nose, has a good sense of what to do next. Blackheads on the nose may therefore ask two questions:

- **Do you trust your own sense of direction**, or do you let yourself be led by the nose, an image French and English share?
- **Do you feel you must keep up a certain image**, with a constant fear of losing face if people saw more of you?

## A gentler way to hold it

Blackheads are a skin matter, and a gentle routine with the right product does more than scrubbing. The inner step is just as gentle: changing the way you look at yourself.

- **Separate the skin from your worth.** A blocked pore says nothing about how clean or how valuable you are.
- **Catch the dark thoughts.** When you notice a harsh thought about yourself, write it down, then write a fairer one beside it.
- **Learn to trust yourself.** Start with small decisions, and notice the times your instinct was right.
- **Make plans again.** Choose one project that is for you, however small, and take the first step.
- **Look at your qualities.** Put your attention on what is good in you. People often treat you with the respect you show yourself.
- **Reach out once.** If loneliness weighs, contact one person this week, even briefly.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Do I sometimes feel, deep down, that I am not quite clean or not worth much?
- Which part of me am I ashamed of, and how does that shame change the way I meet people?
- Where do I feel alone, left behind, or as if I have failed?
- Which dark thoughts about myself have become so familiar that I barely notice them?
- Do I trust my own sense of direction, or do I let others lead me by the nose?
- Which of my qualities do I find hardest to acknowledge?

***Affirmation ***

> “I learn to trust myself more, and I turn my attention to what is good in me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Blackheads with many red spots, painful lumps or cysts. This is acne, and effective treatments exist.
- Spots that leave scars or dark marks.
- Blackheads or spots that start suddenly in adulthood, especially with irregular periods or extra hair growth, which can point to a hormonal cause.
- Skin that gets worse after a new medicine or skin product.
- Skin that affects your mood or makes you avoid people. A pharmacist or GP can help, and support is available.

## **Related conditions**

**Acne**

Acne is often read as a conflict with one's own image and identity, a mix of irritation, shame and fear of judgment that comes up to the surface, especially during periods of change.

**Cysts**

Spiritually, cysts are often linked to things held in until they form a knot, such as a project you could not complete, an old hurt or grudge that has hardened, and habits of thought that have become a protective wall.

**Rosacea**

Rosacea reddens the face, often the cheeks and nose, with flushing and small bumps. It is read as anger at not being listened to, and a cutting-off from closeness.
