**In short**

Spiritually, shoulder blade pain is often linked to friction between who you are and what you want to express. It can point to feeling pressed down by authority, letting yourself be walked on, and hiding behind a shield. The left side speaks of home, the right of work.

## What shoulder blade pain is

The shoulder blade, or scapula, is a flat, triangular bone that lies over the back of the ribcage. Together with the collarbone, it joins the arm to the trunk. Many muscles attach to it, which is why it is such a common place for aches, knots and tension.

Most shoulder blade pain comes from these muscles: long hours at a desk or a phone, a heavy bag on one side, a bad night's sleep, sport, or [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress) that keeps the upper back braced. Problems in the shoulder joint itself, a trapped nerve in the neck, or a stiff thoracic spine can also be felt there. A broken shoulder blade is rare and usually follows a hard fall or a road accident.

Pain can also be referred to the shoulder blade from inside the body. On the left, it can come from the heart. On the right, it can come from the gallbladder, often after a fatty meal. Pain that is worse when breathing in can come from the lungs. Shingles can start as a burning band of pain before the rash appears. Muscular pain usually settles within a few weeks with gentle movement, heat, simple painkillers, posture changes and, if needed, physiotherapy.

## The emotional meaning of shoulder blade pain

The trunk carries who you are. The arms carry what you want to do and express, as extensions of the energy of the heart. The shoulder blade is where the two meet. Spiritually, pain or a fracture here points to a conflict between what you are and what you want to show the world through your actions.

### Pressed down by authority

Shoulder blade pain is often linked to a revolt against authority. You may feel cornered or crushed by a boss, a parent, an institution or a rule, with no room to move. The muscles brace, as if holding up a weight that comes from above.

### Being walked on

A sore shoulder blade can also point to a habit of letting yourself be trampled. People step over your limits and you say nothing. The back, then, wants armour. It is as if you needed a shield across your shoulders to protect yourself.

### Feeling less than the others

Behind the shield, there is often a situation in which you feel completely beneath the people around you: less good, less competent, less worthy of your place. You go quiet and stop putting yourself forward.

### Passivity and low energy

When you live that situation passively, waiting for it to change on its own, your energy drains. The shoulder blade stays tight, and the arms, which were meant to act, hang back.

## Left side or right side?

In this approach, the shoulder blades add a precise nuance. Tension or knots under the left shoulder blade point to a disagreement at home, with a partner or with your children. Tension under the right shoulder blade points to something at work that annoys you. This fits the wider map in which the left side carries the receptive, "feminine" principle and the right side the active, "masculine" one, in men and women alike. See [**the left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

### Left shoulder blade pain

Spiritually, left shoulder blade pain is linked to your close emotional life. Is there a disagreement with your partner or with your children that you have kept to yourself? The left side is also the side of feeling, intuition and receiving, and of the women in your life. You may be holding the peace at home by swallowing what you feel, or giving so much that you no longer receive.

Medically, the left side always comes first. Left shoulder blade pain with chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or pain in the arm or jaw can be a heart attack. Call emergency services before thinking about meaning.

### Right shoulder blade pain

Spiritually, right shoulder blade pain is linked to work and to your place in the outer world. Something there annoys or upsets you: a decision imposed on you, a colleague who walks over your limits, or an authority you feel crushed by. The right side is also the side of action, logic, decisions and the men in your life. The question is where you stopped acting for yourself.

Medically, pain under the right shoulder blade with pain in the upper right tummy, fever or yellow skin can come from the gallbladder. See [**gallstones**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/liver-and-gallbladder/gallstones).

### Pain between the shoulder blades

Pain between the shoulder blades sits on the spine of the [**middle back**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/middle-back-pain), which has its own spiritual interpretation, vertebra by vertebra. When the ache spreads to both blades at once, the two questions above meet: what you hold back at home and what you endure at work. You may feel that both sides of your life press on the same spot, and that you have no shield left on either side.

Sudden, tearing pain between the shoulder blades, or pain there with chest symptoms, needs emergency care.

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to blame yourself for a sore back. Posture, muscles, the neck and the organs around the ribcage all play a real part, and the warning signs above need a doctor. The emotional perspective invites you to look at the meeting point between who you are and what you do.

- **Consider your whole self.** Look at who you are as a whole, so that what you do comes from there and not from fear.
- **Take quiet time.** A few minutes of calm each day, to meditate or simply look honestly at who you really are.
- **Make friends with solitude.** Time alone is a way of coming back into contact with your deeper self.
- **Then say what you need.** Once you know it, expressing your needs becomes easier, at home and at work.
- **Lower the shield a little.** Choose one place where you let yourself be walked on, and set one limit there.
- **Move out of passivity.** One small action on your own behalf gives energy back.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Is there an authority, at work or at home, that I feel stuck under or crushed by?
- Where do I let people walk over me without saying anything?
- In which situation do I feel below the others, less good or less capable?
- Is there a disagreement with my partner or my children that I have not spoken about?
- What is annoying me at work that I keep to myself?
- What do I want to express with my hands and my heart that my life does not yet show?

> “I take my whole self into account. From that quiet place, I say what I need and act in harmony with who I am.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Pain under or near the left shoulder blade with chest pain or tightness, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, neck or jaw. Call emergency services, as this can be a heart attack.
- Sudden, severe tearing pain between the shoulder blades. Call emergency services.
- Shoulder blade pain that is worse when you breathe in, with breathlessness, a cough or coughing up blood, or after a long journey or an operation. Seek urgent care, as it can come from the lungs or a clot.
- Pain under the right shoulder blade with pain in the upper right tummy, fever, or yellow skin or eyes.
- A burning or tingling band of pain on one side, followed by a rash. This can be shingles.
- Pain after a fall or a blow, numbness or weakness in the arm, or pain that wakes you at night, is getting worse, or has not improved after a few weeks.
