**In short**

Spiritually, right shoulder blade pain is linked to work and your place in the outer world, often something there that annoys you, an authority you feel crushed by, or colleagues who walk over your limits. Pain under the right shoulder blade can also come from the gallbladder.

## What right shoulder blade pain is

Right shoulder blade pain is pain over, under or along the inner edge of the right scapula. Most often it comes from the muscles that move and steady the shoulder blade. For right-handed people, these work all day: holding a mouse at arm's length, reaching, lifting, carrying, playing racquet sports. Long hours at a desk with the shoulders rounded, a poor pillow, or [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress) that keeps the upper back braced can all leave a knot under the right shoulder blade. A stiff upper back or a trapped nerve in the neck can be felt there too.

The right side has a well-known internal cause. The gallbladder lies under the right ribs, and gallbladder pain, often from [**gallstones**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/liver-and-gallbladder/gallstones), classically spreads round to the back under the right shoulder blade. It tends to come in episodes, often after a fatty meal or in the night, with pain in the upper right tummy. With fever, vomiting, or yellow skin or eyes, it needs a doctor the same day. The liver can refer pain in a similar way.

Other causes apply to both sides. Pain that is sharper when you breathe in can come from the lung or its lining, including a clot, and needs urgent care. A sudden tearing pain between the shoulder blades can come from the aorta and is an emergency. Heart pain is more often felt on the left, but shoulder blade pain on either side with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating or nausea needs emergency help (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in the EU). Shingles can begin as a burning band before the rash. Muscular pain usually settles with movement, heat, simple painkillers, a better workstation and sometimes physiotherapy. The page on [**shoulder blade pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/shoulders/shoulder-blade-pain) covers the condition as a whole.

## The emotional meaning of right shoulder blade pain

Spiritually, the shoulder blade is the meeting point between the trunk, which carries who you are, and the arms, which carry what you want to express and do. Pain here is linked to friction between the two. In the map of [**the left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body), the right side carries the active, masculine principle, in women as much as in men: action, logic, decisions, work, and the men in your life. The right shoulder blade is given a precise nuance: it is linked to something at work that annoys or upsets you.

### Something at work that grates

Tension under the right shoulder blade is linked to an irritation at work that you carry rather than voice. It may be small and daily: a colleague who interrupts, a process that wastes your time, a client who never pays on time. It may be larger: a reorganisation, a promotion that went to someone else, a decision taken over your head. You keep working, and the back keeps count.

### Pressed down by authority

Shoulder blade pain is linked to a revolt against authority, the feeling of being cornered or crushed by it. On the right, that authority is usually professional: a manager, a board, a rulebook, an institution. You may feel there is no room to move, and the muscles brace as if holding up a weight from above.

### Walked on at work

A sore shoulder blade is also linked to letting yourself be trampled. At work, this can look like taking on tasks nobody else wants, staying late without being asked, letting others take credit, or saying yes when you mean no. The back then wants armour, a shield across the shoulders to keep the next demand away.

### Feeling less competent

Behind the shield, there is often a working situation in which you feel beneath the others: less qualified, less quick, less sure of yourself. You go quiet in meetings and stop putting your ideas forward. The right shoulder blade may ask where you have decided, perhaps too early, that you are not up to it.

### Waiting instead of acting

When you live this passively, hoping the job will change on its own, energy drains away. The shoulder blade stays tight, and the arms, made for action, hang back. Because the right side is partly learnt from your father, his way of handling work and authority may be the one you repeat. For a man, the strain may touch rivalry. For a woman, it may touch her working life and the roles she wants to step out of.

## The other side

[**Left shoulder blade pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/shoulders/left-shoulder-blade-pain) is linked to home: a disagreement with a partner or with your children that you keep to yourself, and the people you love walking over your limits. The right shoulder blade asks what you endure at work, the left what you swallow at home. The page on [**shoulder blade pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/shoulders/shoulder-blade-pain) holds both, along with pain between the shoulder blades.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Step back to see the whole.** Take a quiet moment to look at who you are, so that your work comes from there and not from fear.
- **Name what grates.** Write down the one thing at work that annoys you most.
- **Then say what you need.** Bring it up calmly, in one clear request.
- **Hand back one task.** Choose one thing you took on that is not yours, and return it.
- **Speak once in the next meeting.** Put one idea forward, even a small one.
- **Act instead of waiting.** One step on your own behalf gives energy back.
- **Look after the back.** Adjust the desk and the mouse, move often, and use warmth and gentle stretching.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What is annoying me at work that I keep to myself?
- Is there an authority, a boss, a rule or an institution, that I feel cornered or crushed by?
- Where do colleagues or clients step over my limits without my saying anything?
- In which situation at work do I feel less competent than the others?
- Am I waiting for my working life to change on its own?
- Does what I do every day express who I am?

***Affirmation***

> “I take my whole self into account. I act from who I am, say what I need at work, and stand in my own place.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Pain under the right shoulder blade with pain in the upper right tummy, especially after a fatty meal, or with fever, vomiting, or yellow skin or eyes. This can come from the gallbladder or the liver and needs a doctor the same day, or emergency care if the pain is severe.
- Shoulder blade pain on either side with chest pain or tightness, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, neck or jaw. Call emergency services straight away (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in the EU), as this can be a heart attack.
- Sudden, severe, tearing pain between the shoulder blades. Call emergency services.
- Shoulder blade pain that is worse when you breathe in, with breathlessness, a cough or coughing up blood, or after a long journey or an operation. Seek urgent care, as it can come from the lungs or a clot.
- A burning or tingling band of pain on one side, followed by a rash. This can be shingles, and early treatment helps.
- Pain after a fall or a blow, numbness or weakness in the arm, or pain that wakes you at night, is getting worse, or has not improved after a few weeks.

## **Related conditions**

**Middle back pain**

Spiritually, middle back pain is often linked to emotional guilt, to a past you keep going back to, and to feeling that you must be the pillar with no one to support you. Each of the twelve thoracic vertebrae adds its own nuance.

**Gallstones**

Gallstones are hardened deposits in the bile. They are read as bitterness, resentment and anger that have been kept for years until they take a stony form, and as strength you stored instead of using.

**Left shoulder blade pain**

Spiritually, left shoulder blade pain is linked to your close emotional life, often a disagreement with a partner or with your children that you keep to yourself, a habit of letting the people you love walk over you, and a need for a shield. Left shoulder blade pain with chest symptoms is a medical emergency first.

**Right shoulder pain**

Spiritually, right shoulder pain is linked to material insecurity and to the weight of work, money, authority and having to succeed. It may ask whether you carry a project alone, or whether the stiff, controlling side of you has taken over.
