# **Snoring: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of snoring: how it may relate to holding on to the old, feeling unheard and saying at night what goes unsaid by day.

Nose and throat Also known as: Snore, Sleep apnoea, Sleep apnea, Ronflement

**In short**

Spiritually, snoring is often linked to holding on to old ideas, habits or relationships, and to words that were not said during the day and keep looking for a way out at night.

## What snoring is

Snoring is the noise made during sleep when air cannot flow freely through the nose and throat, so the soft tissues vibrate. It is very common, especially with age, in men, and in people who are overweight. Drinking alcohol, smoking, sleeping on your back, a blocked nose from a cold, allergies or [**sinusitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/sinusitis), and large tonsils in children can all make it worse.

Most snoring is harmless, if tiring for the people nearby. But loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking can be obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition in which the airway closes repeatedly during the night. Sleep apnoea leaves people exhausted by day and raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart problems and accidents, so it needs to be checked by a doctor. Care ranges from losing weight, cutting down on alcohol and changing sleep position, to a mouth device, a CPAP machine or, occasionally, surgery.

## The emotional meaning of snoring

Spiritually, snoring is linked to an obstacle in the passage of breath, and so to what is blocked in the way you take life in. The questions turn around holding on, feeling unheard and feeling caught.

### Holding on to the old

Snoring can point to a grip on old ideas, old attitudes or material things. You may be insisting on staying in a relationship or a situation that is not good for you, or going round in the same patterns of life until they cramp your freedom. Sometimes the answer is simpler: you are tired.

### What you breathe with difficulty

When the sinuses are blocked, the question becomes: what am I finding hard to breathe, so hard that it follows me even into the night? It can be very concrete, such as the smell of a partner or a perfume.

### Saying at night what goes unsaid by day

Snoring can also be heard as a way of reaching towards the person sleeping beside you, of closing a distance between you that is physical as well as emotional. If your requests are not heard during the day, the unconscious may keep talking at night, since it has no other way to speak. Behind this there can be a sense of being trapped, in a relationship with a partner or in another close relationship.

## Breathing in or breathing out?

It can help to notice when the snore happens:

- **On the in-breath**, it is as if you were calling for help.
- **On the out-breath**, it is as if you wanted to push a danger away.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Let go of what has had its day.** Choose one old idea, habit or object you are still clutching, and loosen your grip on it.
- **Make room for the new.** Notice where a fresh start is already asking to come in.
- **Speak clearly by day.** Say what you need without hints, hidden meanings or ambiguity, so the night does not have to carry it.
- **Rest when you are tired.** Fatigue is a reason in itself, and it deserves attention.
- **Stay open to change.** Renewal is easier when you are not holding the door shut.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Am I clinging to old ideas, attitudes or possessions that no longer serve me?
- Am I staying in a relationship or a situation that is not good for me?
- Am I simply tired, or stuck in old patterns that limit my freedom?
- What did I not manage to say today that my body seems to keep saying at night?
- Do I feel heard when I ask for something, at home or elsewhere?
- Is there a distance between me and my partner that I would like to close?

***Affirmation ***

> “I let go of the old to make room for the new. I speak clearly, and I am open to change.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Someone notices that you stop breathing, gasp or choke while you sleep. This can be sleep apnoea, which needs a doctor.
- Snoring with daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, poor concentration or dozing off while driving. Do not drive if you feel sleepy.
- Snoring with high blood pressure or a heart problem.
- A child who snores most nights, breathes through the mouth, or seems tired or restless by day.
- A blocked nose on one side that does not clear, or snoring that started suddenly.
- If you have been given a CPAP machine or a mouth device, do not stop using it because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Insomnia**

Insomnia is often read as a fear of letting go. Keeping the mind busy can be a way of staying in control, and of not having to hear what is going on inside, especially when rest itself feels undeserved.

**High blood pressure**

High blood pressure is often read through the image of a pressure cooker. Emotions and thoughts held back for a long time, a need to control and to perform, and heavy self-imposed demands may keep the pressure rising.

**Sinusitis**

Sinusitis is an inflamed, blocked sinus in the face. It is read as a powerlessness toward someone or something you cannot stand, and as a life squeezed until it is ready to burst.
