**In short**

Spiritually, nosebleeds are often linked to joy leaking out of your life, a deep disappointment, and the feeling of not being recognised, accepted or loved for who you really are.

## What nosebleeds are

A nosebleed, or epistaxis, is bleeding from the inside of the nose. Most come from small blood vessels at the front of the nose, which are fragile and close to the surface. They are very common, especially in children and older adults, and usually not serious.

Common causes include picking or blowing the nose hard, dry or heated air, a [**cold**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/common-cold) or [**sinusitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/sinusitis), allergies and minor knocks. Blood-thinning medicines, some bleeding disorders and, less often, other conditions make bleeds more likely. Most can be stopped at home: sit up, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose just above the nostrils for 10 to 15 minutes, breathing through the mouth. Do not lie down or tip the head back. A doctor can seal a vessel that keeps bleeding or pack the nose.

## The emotional meaning of nosebleeds

The nose is where air enters on its way to the lungs, and the blood carries that air, as oxygen, to every part of the body. Spiritually, blood is linked to the joy of living. A nosebleed is read as joy, and love of life, flowing out of you.

### Joy draining away

The bleed is often linked to a loss of joy about something you are living through, and usually to a deep disappointment. You may feel emptied, as if all your blood, all your zest for life, were running out.

### Not recognised for your worth

At its heart is the feeling of not being recognised, accepted or loved at your true value. One question to ask honestly: do you sometimes take the victim's place, and keep your distance from others while hoping they will notice? A nosebleed does draw attention. It can be worth asking what kind of attention you are missing.

### Shut in and pressed for time

The spiritual interpretation also names the sense of being shut in and pushed by everything there is to do, with no space left to breathe.

### In a child

In a child, nosebleeds can sit with difficulty in taking one's place before the person who stands for authority, and a constant search for that person's approval.

### An old belief

An ancient belief holds that, when the nose bleeds, a bad emotion or a bad situation is leaving your life. It is a kinder way of hearing the bleed: as something being released rather than only lost.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Name the disappointment.** Say, or write, what took the joy out of things, instead of letting it drain quietly.
- **Recognise yourself.** List what you bring, and what you have done well, without waiting for someone else to say it.
- **Love yourself on purpose.** Treat yourself with the attention you hope others will give you.
- **Come closer.** If you have been keeping your distance, take one small step towards someone you trust.
- **Make breathing room.** Drop or postpone one task so that life feels less pressed.
- **Let your happiness rest on you.** It can depend on what you think of yourself, not on someone else's approval.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where has my joy been draining away lately?
- What disappointment have I not yet allowed myself to feel?
- Do I feel recognised, accepted and loved for my true worth?
- Am I keeping my distance from others, while hoping they will notice me?
- Do I feel shut in and rushed by everything I have to do?
- Whose approval am I still waiting for?

***Affirmation ***

> “I recognise my own worth. My happiness rests on what I think of myself.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Bleeding that has not stopped after 10 to 15 minutes of firm pressure, or that is very heavy. Go to A&E.
- A nosebleed after a blow to the head, or with difficulty breathing, or if you are swallowing a lot of blood. Seek urgent care.
- Frequent nosebleeds, or nosebleeds in a child under two.
- Nosebleeds with easy bruising, bleeding gums or other signs of a bleeding problem.
- If you take blood-thinning medicine, tell a doctor about nosebleeds, but do not stop or change the dose because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**High blood pressure**

High blood pressure is often read through the image of a pressure cooker. Emotions and thoughts held back for a long time, a need to control and to perform, and heavy self-imposed demands may keep the pressure rising.

**Common cold**

The common cold is often read as a sign of overload. When too many things happen at once and we feel confused, the body may impose a pause, a moment to keep our distance and reconnect with ourselves.

**Sinusitis**

Sinusitis is an inflamed, blocked sinus in the face. It is read as a powerlessness toward someone or something you cannot stand, and as a life squeezed until it is ready to burst.
