# **Menopause: emotional and spiritual meaning**

Menopause Also known as: The change, Hot flushes, Hot flashes

Updated 4 October 2026

**In short**

Menopause is the end of periods, often with hot flushes, sweats and a body that feels unfamiliar. It is read as a pause for taking stock, and as a femininity that wants room beside the years of doing and providing.

## What menopause is

Menopause is the point at which periods stop, because the ovaries no longer release eggs and the hormones oestrogen and progesterone fall. It is usually recognised after twelve months without a period, most often around the age of fifty. The years around it, the perimenopause, can bring hot flushes and night sweats, broken sleep, a change in mood, vaginal dryness, and a cycle that becomes irregular before it ends. Bone and heart health change over the longer term. Hormone therapy, and other medicines for flushes, sleep and vaginal dryness, are ordinary care when the symptoms are heavy. A clinician chooses them. Bleeding that returns after the periods have finished is a medical question, not a mood.

## The emotional meaning of menopause

In the autumn of life the body changes, and the reading asks for that change to be met. It is a strongly emotional season. It touches the sense of still being lovable and desirable, and above all of still being loved and desired. You take stock. [**Regret**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/regret) may be there, for what you did not do, and the impression that life was not fully tasted. You may feel you have to settle for less love, especially through sexuality, as if the body had gone quiet and passion were no longer allowed to it.

The first half of life is often called the active period. You act, you do, you bring children, you build. The rational, organising side leads, the side sometimes called masculine, or yang. Now you can feel diminished, and you may want to keep every domestic chore and every social task going, rather than let femininity, softness and creativity come forward. That is the side called feminine, or yin. You would like to step into life from your own authority, and to give yourself the first place. It frightens you, because it faces the unknown. There is pressure, and the protection you reach for may be resistance, or indifference.

## Hot flushes

Hot flushes are read as an inner conflict. The feminine side feels smothered by symptoms the masculine side is understood as stirring up. The word itself is heard as a pun. *Ménopause* sits beside *men oppose*, men set against. The heat can show the opposition you live with certain men, whose behaviour you cannot tolerate.

That heat is full of emotions that used to have a way out with the [**period**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/reproductive-system/menstrual-pain). Another way of expressing them is asked for now. Speech is one. Physical and sexual desire, which is still very much there, is another. The flushes remind you that the need for human warmth, including through sexuality, stays a priority, and that it wants care. Undressing because you are too hot can recall the times you undressed to draw the person you love. The sweat is read as a release of emotions that no longer have their old reason.

The direction is to find again the woman who is useful, experienced and full of wisdom. Even without childbearing, a spiritual direction is looked for. You need to find the woman in you. It is a little like retirement. There is time now to work in freedom, to build other plans, other challenges. Liberty and individuality take on a new sense, and a new life can start. Attention, which in many lives sat only on the children and the family, can turn toward yourself and toward your partner. A new reason for living shows itself. It is a kind of beginning again.

Frustration, insecurity and [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) are the hot feelings named here. Freedom, softness and trust in what is ahead are the cooler ones the reading sets beside them. The [**heart**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation) and the blood are pictured filling with love of self when what you love, and what you have chosen, is allowed to be said.

## Ageing, and the pause

The fear of ageing can become more present, more real. A return of bleeding can be read, inwardly, as a way of reaching back for a physical youth that has gone. Grieving that youth matters, so the present can be lived. This stage is read as a pause rather than an ending. It is time to evaluate the life, to draw up the balance, to meet the situations you have always fled.

Sexuality can be found again and fully lived. Vaginal dryness and a loss of desire are part of what many women bring to a clinician, and they are also part of what this reading invites you to look at with kindness.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Accept the change**, in the body, in the inner and spiritual life, and in the social and family life.
- **Live simply, and taste the moment.** You have the power to create this chapter from the experience you already carry.
- **Treat menopause as a birth** into who you actually are. You no longer have to live only for other people.
- **Let wisdom bring joy, calm, and a love that does not bargain.** The youth named here is a youth of heart.
- **Keep the medical plan.** Hormone therapy, help with flushes and dryness, and any bleeding after the periods have stopped, stay with your clinician.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Do I still feel lovable and desirable, or have I decided that love now has to shrink?
- What do I regret not having done, or not having tasted?
- Am I keeping every chore going so I do not have to meet the unknown?
- What emotion used to leave with my periods, and how can it leave now?
- Where do I oppose the men in my life, and where do I oppose my own softness?
- Can I grieve the youth that has gone, and live this day as a beginning?

***Affirmation ***

> “I accept the changes in my body and in my life. I live for myself, with the wisdom these years have given me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Bleeding after the periods have stopped for a year. This needs a doctor.
- Very heavy bleeding, or bleeding with dizziness.
- Hot flushes with chest pain, a sudden severe headache, or weakness on one side of the body. Call emergency services.
- Symptoms that wreck sleep, mood or work, including flushes you want help with.
- Pain during sex, or vaginal dryness that makes sex sore.
- Do not stop or change hormone therapy you were prescribed because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Menstrual pain**

Menstrual pain is often read as a sign of tension with our own femininity. Guilt, anger at the constraints placed on women, perfectionism and emotions held back may make the cycle harder to live.
