**In short**

Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that often has physical causes and deserves a medical check. Spiritually, it is linked to fear of letting go and being vulnerable, to pressure to perform, to feeling useless, and to emotions a man has not learnt to handle.

## What erectile dysfunction is

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is when a man regularly cannot get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. Occasional difficulty is normal and very common, especially with tiredness, alcohol or [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress). It becomes a condition when it keeps happening.

Most often the cause is physical, and it is frequently more than one thing. An erection depends on healthy blood vessels, nerves and hormones, so anything that narrows the arteries can affect it: [**high blood pressure**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/high-blood-pressure), [**high cholesterol**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/high-cholesterol), heart disease, [**diabetes**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/blood-sugar/diabetes), smoking and being overweight. Low testosterone, nerve damage, some medicines, heavy drinking and surgery for the prostate can also be involved. Psychological causes are real too: [**anxiety**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anxiety) about performance, [**depression**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/depression), stress and relationship difficulties. Often body and mind combine.

Because the blood vessels of the penis are small, erection problems can show up years before a heart problem. That is why they deserve a check-up, not silence. Treatment works for most men: lifestyle changes, medicines prescribed by a doctor, devices, treatment of the underlying cause, and counselling or psychosexual therapy.

## The emotional meaning of erectile dysfunction

Spiritually, erection problems are linked to the meeting point of trust, control and worth. Even where the cause is clearly physical, it can be worth looking at what the situation touches in you.

### Fear of letting go

Impotence is often linked to a fear of giving yourself in full trust, of surrendering to a partner, or of losing control of yourself or of the other. You are afraid of being vulnerable. In this sense intimacy can be intimidating. There may also be [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of making your partner pregnant.

### The pressure to perform

Many men carry heavy responsibilities and a great deal of pressure at work, and society asks them to perform and outdo themselves. Carried into the bedroom, that demand becomes a pressure to excel, which creates so much tension that you "lose your means". You start to dread intimacy. You may feel obliged to give pleasure at all costs, and the burden is heavy.

### Feeling useless or on the way down

The opposite can happen near retirement, or after a sudden loss of work. You feel good for nothing, in decline. If you can no longer excel at work, you think, you will not perform in bed either. In one area of life, meaning has gone. If you do not dare to talk about it, guilt and confusion grow, sometimes into fear of losing your partner.

### Emotions that come too close

During intimacy you are closer to your feelings. If you have not learnt, as a man, to handle emotions, that closeness can bring up the wounded inner child, with his insecurity, fear, [**rejection**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/rejection) and feeling of not being understood. Past relationships you lived as humiliating failures can leave you feeling "not up to it" next time. Insecurity, a sense of failure, self-hatred, guilt or neglect can all weigh in.

### Old hurts and resentment

The difficulty can also go back further: [**resentment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/resentment) towards a former partner, a sense of betrayal, or a separation lived as a loss on every level. Earlier physical or emotional harm, including in childhood, can leave the body guarded. These deserve care from a trained therapist, not interpretation.

### Power, territory and the people you fear displeasing

Sometimes holding back sexually becomes a way of keeping some power over a partner who asks too much. You may feel that your territory, what you own and identify with, is under threat. Or you may feel threatened by your partner, emotionally or otherwise. What will happen if you give yourself to her? Will you lose your sense of strength? In French, you fear being *mangé tout rond*, "eaten whole", taken advantage of.

If a partner has come to occupy the place your mother held, and you live in fear of not pleasing her or of being unable to make her happy, that powerlessness can show in the body too. Being a man can also send you back to the image of your father. You can notice that you are different from him, and live your own life rather than his.

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to blame yourself for an erection problem. Blood vessels, nerves, hormones and medicines play a real part, and a doctor's check is the first step. The emotional perspective invites you to look at how you carry your worth as a man.

- **Define your place.** Know where you stand, at home and in your relationship, without having to prove it.
- **Get in touch with your emotions.** Let feelings be felt in the body, rather than managed from the head.
- **Let go of control.** Relaxation, physical and mental, lets energy move through the whole body.
- **Separate worth from performance.** Your value is in who you are as a person, not in what you achieve in bed.
- **Talk about it.** Saying it to your partner often eases more guilt and fear than silence ever could.
- **Be creative elsewhere.** Your creativity can find other outlets in your life, too.
- **Revisit your values.** Ask what love means to you, and remember that real love can be lived in many ways, and that you deserve it.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Am I afraid of letting go, of losing control, or of being vulnerable with my partner?
- Has the pressure to perform at work found its way into my intimate life?
- Since a change at work or retirement, do I feel useless or on the way down?
- Is there something I have not dared to tell my partner, and am I carrying guilt or fear about it?
- Am I still carrying a failure, a betrayal or a resentment from a past relationship?
- Do I measure my worth as a man by sexual performance, rather than by who I am?

***Affirmation ***

> “I define my place, I welcome my emotions and I let go of control. My value lies in who I am, and my power is inside me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Erection problems that last more than a few weeks. See a GP. Erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and these are worth finding early.
- Chest pain, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, during sex or at any time. Call emergency services.
- An erection that lasts more than four hours, or is painful. This is an emergency.
- Erection problems after an injury, after pelvic or prostate surgery, or with numbness or problems passing urine.
- Erection problems with low mood, anxiety or relationship difficulties. Talking therapy and psychosexual therapy help.
- Do not buy erection medicines online without a prescription, and do not stop or change a prescribed medicine because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Diabetes**

Diabetes is often read as a sorrow of love. Sugar stands for tenderness, and high blood sugar for sadness, a refusal of sweetness, and reserves kept ready for a fight you do not want.

[Diabetes](https://www.body-hemisync.com/blood-sugar/diabetes)

**High blood pressure**

High blood pressure is often read through the image of a pressure cooker. Emotions and thoughts held back for a long time, a need to control and to perform, and heavy self-imposed demands may keep the pressure rising.

[High blood pressure](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/high-blood-pressure)

**High cholesterol**

Cholesterol is a fat the body needs, and a surplus can narrow the vessels over years. A high level is read as joy of living that no longer circulates, often after a retirement, a departure, or a life lived to please other people.

[High cholesterol](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/high-cholesterol)

**Low libido**

Low libido is a loss of interest in sex, with many physical and emotional causes. Spiritually, it is linked to guilt learnt early about the body, to pressure to perform, to resentment held towards a partner, and to a wider desire for life that has gone quiet.

**Prostate problems**

Prostate problems are often read as a question of masculine power and inner direction. Pressure to perform, the feeling of no longer being "enough," and emotions that are not allowed out may all gather in this small gland.
