# **Side stitch: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of a side stitch: rushing, pushing past your limits to look successful, and a body asking you to slow down.

Muscles Also known as: Stitch, Exercise-related transient abdominal pain, Referred pain, Side cramp, Stitch in the side, Point de côté

**In short**

Spiritually, a side stitch is often linked to going too fast, pushing yourself to meet outside standards of success, and not listening to your inner voice, until the body makes you slow your pace.

## What a side stitch is

A side stitch is a sharp, stabbing or cramping pain in the side of the abdomen, usually just below the ribs, that comes on during exercise. Its medical name is exercise-related transient abdominal pain. It is common in running, swimming and horse riding, and more likely after a large meal or a sugary drink shortly before exercise.

The exact cause is still debated. Irritation of the lining of the abdomen, strain on the ligaments that hold the organs, and spasm of the diaphragm have all been suggested. A stitch is harmless. It usually eases within minutes if you slow down, breathe deeply and slowly, and press on or stretch the painful side. Eating lightly before exercise and building up fitness make it less likely.

A stitch is different from referred pain, which is pain felt somewhere other than its source. Heart pain can be felt in the arm or jaw, and gallbladder pain in the right shoulder. A pain in the side that is not linked to exercise, or does not settle with rest, needs a doctor's assessment.

The emotional meaning below does not replace this. It is for those who notice that their stitch tends to arrive when life, too, is going too fast.

## The emotional meaning of a side stitch

Spiritually, a side stitch is an alarm. It comes after effort, when you walk fast or run, or as pain between the ribs after intense physical agitation or exasperation. Its question is simple: why am I going so fast, and what is pushing me?

### Rushing to look successful

The stitch is often read as a sign that you are forcing yourself to do things to give a good image, or to match what society calls success. You may be refusing to hear your inner voice in order to keep up. The question is whose finish line you are running towards.

### Exasperation and disappointment

The irritation in the side may carry something more. Is it exasperation, discontent, or disappointment? Naming which one helps you see what the hurry is covering.

### Pushing past your limits

A stitch can belong to someone who pushes to the maximum, whatever the cost to the body, listening only to the head and to your insecurities. The pain does what you would not: it makes you slow down.

### Letting the energy flow

Spiritually, the stitch teaches you to let energy circulate without [**impatience**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/impatience). It is an invitation to pause, breathe, and find a pace your body can keep.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Ask what the rush is for.** When you feel hurried, stop for a breath and ask what, exactly, is pressing.
- **Slow down in daily life too.** The pause the stitch forces on a run is also worth taking in an ordinary day.
- **Listen to your inner voice.** It knows what you need and what is good for you, often better than the standards you are chasing.
- **Choose your own pace.** Let your body relax into a rhythm that is yours, so it no longer needs to protest.
- **Pause before you have to.** Build short breaks into effort, at work and in exercise, rather than waiting for pain to stop you.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Why am I going so fast? What is pressing me so hard?
- Who am I trying to impress, or which standard of success am I trying to meet?
- Is my irritation coming from exasperation, discontent or disappointment?
- Do I push myself to the limit whatever it costs my body?
- Am I listening only to my head and my insecurities?
- What does my inner voice say I need right now?

***Affirmation ***

> “I go at my own pace. I take time to live, and I listen to the voice inside that knows what is good for me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Pain in the chest, or pain spreading to the arm, neck, jaw or shoulder with effort, especially with breathlessness or sweating. Stop and call emergency services, as it can come from the heart.
- Sudden severe abdominal pain, or pain with vomiting, fever, a swollen hard belly, or blood in your stool or vomit. Get urgent medical help.
- Pain that starts low on the right side and gets worse, which can be appendicitis.
- Side pain that comes without exercise, does not go away when you stop and rest, or keeps coming back.
- Pain in the side or back with fever or pain when passing urine, which can come from the kidneys.

**Rib pain**

Spiritually, rib pain is often linked to a protection that has worn thin, to pressure from outside that became too much, to comparing yourself with someone close, and to a bruise inside that wants to be heard.
