# **Wisdom teeth: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of wisdom teeth: an impacted tooth and taking your place, your autonomy, and what each of the four may stand for.

**In short**

Spiritually, wisdom teeth are often linked to the autonomy and wisdom you gain with the years. An impacted wisdom tooth, one that will not come through and take its place, may reflect a reluctance to take all the room that is yours and to trust yourself.

## What wisdom teeth are

Wisdom teeth are the third molars, the last teeth at the back of the mouth. Most people have four, one in each corner, and they usually come through between the late teens and mid-twenties. Some people have fewer, or none at all.

Often there is not enough room in the jaw, and a wisdom tooth comes through only partly, at an angle, or not at all. This is called an impacted wisdom tooth. Many impacted teeth cause no trouble. Others lead to pain, swelling and infection of the gum around them (pericoronitis), food getting trapped, [**tooth decay**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth/tooth-decay) or [**gum disease**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth/gum-disease) in the tooth next door, and pain that spreads to the [**jaw**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth/jaw-pain), ear or head.

A dentist checks the tooth, usually with an X-ray. Problems are often managed with cleaning, mouthwash, painkillers and, if there is an infection, sometimes antibiotics. When problems keep coming back, the tooth may be taken out, under local anaesthetic or by a specialist. Wisdom teeth that cause no problems are usually left alone.

## The emotional meaning of wisdom teeth

Spiritually, wisdom is a great quality. It opens you to the wider world and gives you solid ground for everything you undertake. Wisdom teeth arrive around the age of twenty-one, at the time you are said to take in your spiritual side, and they stand for the autonomy you gain over the years.

### An impacted wisdom tooth

A wisdom tooth that refuses to come through and "take its place" is read as a mind that does not yet take all the room that is yours, and does not yet fully trust itself. You may keep inside what you dislike about yourself, in order to please others. The tooth is waiting, and so, perhaps, are you.

### What wisdom teeth stand for

Beyond the impacted tooth, wisdom teeth are linked to the world you move in and to your spiritual world: your mission, your personal worth, and the help you give to others. Having no wisdom teeth at all is read as choosing the path of knowledge rather than the mystical one. Having them only in the upper jaw is read as finding it hard to bring your sense of the invisible into daily life. Having them only in the lower jaw is read as putting a lot of energy into everyday action to come back into the physical world.

## Left side or right side?

Each wisdom tooth has its own nuance. The sides are your own right and left, as a dentist numbers them.

- **Upper right (18):** the strength you need to develop to be fully present in the world, at every level.
- **Upper left (28):** the [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of not fitting into the world. Low self-esteem carries a fear of [**rejection**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/rejection).
- **Lower left (38):** your ability to share your views and your emotions with the world around you.
- **Lower right (48):** your ability to fit into the physical world and to be well grounded.

More broadly, the right side is linked to the masculine principle (action, logic, direction) and the left to the feminine principle (feeling, receiving, intuition). See the guide to the [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

## A gentler way to hold it

A painful or infected wisdom tooth needs a dentist. Alongside that, the emotional perspective asks where you are still waiting to come through.

- **Take your place.** Choose one situation where you will speak, act or decide instead of shrinking back.
- **Trust yourself.** Notice the moments when you wait for someone else's approval, and try deciding on your own.
- **Stop hiding to please.** What you dislike about yourself can be looked at kindly, instead of kept out of sight.
- **Let nature take its course.** Growth has its own rhythm. You can open up to change without forcing it.
- **Build solid foundations.** Ask what you want your life to rest on now, and take one step towards it.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where in my life am I not taking all the room that is mine?
- Do I trust myself to stand on my own, or do I keep waiting for permission?
- What do I hide about myself so that others will like me?
- Am I afraid of not fitting in, or of being rejected?
- Do I find it hard to share my views and feelings with the world around me?
- Which solid base do I want to build my life on now?

***Affirmation ***

> “I take the place that is mine. I trust myself, and I let my wisdom come through.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Pain, swelling or a bad taste around a wisdom tooth, which can be an infection of the gum (pericoronitis). See a dentist.
- Swelling of the face or neck with fever, or swelling that spreads. Get urgent dental care.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads to the eye or under the tongue. Go to A&E or call emergency services.
- Not being able to open your mouth properly because of pain or swelling.
- After a wisdom tooth is taken out, pain that gets worse after 2 to 3 days, which can be a dry socket, or bleeding that does not stop with pressure.
- Numbness of the lip, chin or tongue that lasts after a removal. Tell your dentist or surgeon.
- Whether to remove a wisdom tooth is a decision for you and your dentist, not something to delay or force because of an emotional reading.

## **Related conditions**

**Gum disease**

Spiritually, gum disease is often linked to doubt about decisions, ones you keep postponing or have taken and not carried out. Bleeding gums may reflect a lost joy in expressing yourself, and receding gums a feeling that your foundations are giving way.

**Jaw pain**

Spiritually, jaw pain is often linked to anger and words held back behind clenched teeth. It may reflect a gap between what you think and what you dare to say, and the feeling of being muzzled.

**Toothache**

Spiritually, toothache is often linked to decisions you keep postponing because their consequences frighten you. Sharp tooth pain may reflect rage at not being able to say what you want, and each tooth is read as one part of your life.
