**In short**

Spiritually, jaw pain is often linked to anger and words held back behind clenched teeth. It may reflect a gap between what you think and what you dare to say, and the feeling of being muzzled.

## What jaw pain is

Jaw pain is pain in the jaw bones, the muscles you chew with, or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the hinge in front of each ear that connects the lower jaw to the skull. When the pain comes from the joint and the chewing muscles, it is called a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). It can cause aching in the jaw, the face or around the ear, clicking or popping, difficulty opening the mouth wide, a jaw that briefly locks, and [**headaches**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/headaches).

TMD is common, and it is often linked to clenching or [**grinding the teeth**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth/teeth-grinding), [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress), an injury, wear in the joint, or a bite that does not meet well. Most cases improve with simple care: soft food, avoiding wide yawns and gum, warmth or cold on the jaw, relaxation, and sometimes a night guard made by a dentist. Jaw pain can also come from a tooth abscess, sinusitis or an ear problem, and, rarely, pain in the jaw is a sign of a heart attack.

## The emotional meaning of jaw pain

The jaws are the bones that let you eat and begin digesting what you take in, whether food or the reality around you. Spiritually, they show how far you can swallow certain realities, physically and emotionally. They stand for your strength to choose to open up to something or someone, and they make exchanges with others possible in safety. They open the way to truth and to asserting yourself. All the inner power you show is symbolised by your jaws.

Because the two jaws must meet and push against each other to work, they also represent your ability to face struggles and opposition, whether they come from outside or live inside you.

### Clenched teeth and held-back anger

Jaw trouble is read as appearing when you clench your teeth because something is being pushed down: the energy of [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger), stubbornness, obstinacy, perhaps even an unconscious wish to get back at someone or something. Or perhaps you are holding back a cry of inner pain. Things are not going the way you want, and rage rises. You keep chewing over the same problems without finding solutions, and cling to emotions and habits that belong to an earlier age.

A jaw tic can show that you are "speaking in silence". What do you want to keep to yourself at all costs? Which emotions are you imprisoning? A narrow way of seeing events, being out of touch with your own power and holding on to an authority outside you, are part of the same picture. A sense of powerlessness can bring a feeling of inferiority and [**jealousy**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/jealousy). When the jaws ache, the question is whether a forced smile is covering a wish to attack or bite someone.

### Thinking one thing, saying another

When the jaw joint itself is affected and the jaws seem out of line, ask whether there is a gap between what you think and what you dare to say openly. You may be torn between telling the truth and hiding it, between your deep feelings and what you show. Emotions and thoughts pull in different directions, and so do what you would like to do and what you feel you must do. The dreams you had for your life may be very far from what it became, bringing disappointment and doubt, and a fading hope of reaching your ideal, for yourself, your relationship or the world.

A jaw joint that clicks or cracks is read as the fear of contradicting others, especially people in authority. You avoid confrontation and hold back your tears.

### Muzzled

Some people feel muzzled: unable to express real sorrow and inner pain, even if their comments to others can be sharp. Others feel dominated and unable to speak because of [**timidity**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/timidity) or [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear). You may have been forbidden to speak as a child, and understood it as "I must not have much worth saying". When the jaw is read as soft or weakened, the question is where you feel "soft" in some situations, especially when you felt laughed at or not listened to, and how much that has lowered your sense of your own worth.

### A jaw that locks

A jaw that locks is read as being unable to express yourself or to control what surrounds you, with emotions pushed down. It can be frozen by fear or sorrow after a moment when you felt powerless to say or do something to stop a situation. It may have tightened at the very instant you wanted with all your strength to contradict someone, to stop words from being spoken or an event from happening.

## What the circumstances may suggest

- **The upper jaw** is read as your relationship with your father, and **the lower jaw** as your relationship with your mother.
- **A broken jaw**, once it is being treated, may invite a question about rushing things and decisions. Do you feel hurried by life and by others, when part of you is the one that wants to go too fast?
- **Jaws that are too narrow** are read as a personality that was held back in its growth, and a strong pressure to be the best, with the intellect constantly fed and the emotional side left hungry.
- **Grinding the teeth** is read as insecurity, anxiety and strongly repressed emotions, especially in children towards their parents. See [**teeth grinding**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth/teeth-grinding).

## Left side or right side?

When the pain sits on one side, the [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body) can add a nuance.

- **Right jaw:** the masculine side, linked to action, logic, speech and the men in your life, such as a father or partner. Ask whether you are clenching against an authority, or holding back words you need to say to act and choose a direction.
- **Left jaw:** the feminine side, linked to feelings, intuition, tenderness and the women in your life, such as a mother or daughter. Ask whether you are holding back words like "I love you" or "I am hurting", or finding it hard to receive.

## A gentler way to hold it

Jaw pain usually has a physical cause that a dentist or doctor can help with. The emotional perspective asks what you are holding behind your teeth.

- **Unclench, and notice when.** Each time you catch your jaw tight, ask what you were about to say.
- **Close the gap.** Choose one place where what you think and what you say do not match, and bring them a little closer.
- **Let the cry out.** Inner pain that is held in the jaw can be spoken, written or wept.
- **Find your own authority.** You can disagree with someone above you and still respect them.
- **Slow down.** If you tend to rush decisions, give one of them a day longer.
- **Relax the whole system.** Rest, gentle stretching and breathing let energy move freely again, and your emotional side deserves as much care as your intellect.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What am I determined to keep to myself, and which emotions am I locking in?
- Is there a gap between what I think and what I dare to say out loud?
- Do I hide a wish to bite back behind a forced smile?
- Which problem do I keep chewing over without ever finding a way out?
- Was I ever told to be quiet, and did I conclude that I had nothing worth saying?
- Am I afraid to contradict someone, especially someone in authority?

***Affirmation ***

> “I allow myself to speak freely. I take back the place that is mine and live in integrity with my heart and with the truth.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Jaw pain with chest pain, breathlessness, sweating or pain in the arm. Call emergency services, as this can be a heart attack.
- A jaw that locks open or shut, or that you cannot open at all.
- Jaw pain after a blow, a fall or an accident, or teeth that no longer meet properly.
- Swelling of the face or jaw, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth, which can be a dental abscess.
- A lump, a sore that does not heal, or numbness in the jaw or lip that lasts more than three weeks.
- Jaw pain that lasts more than a few weeks, or that makes eating hard. A dentist or GP can help.
