The mouth is where food, water and air come in, and where speech goes out. The teeth cut and grind what you eat, and they are among the hardest structures in the body. Pain, ulcers, decay and gum disease are medical matters. A dentist or a doctor is the right person for them.

In the emotional reading, the mouth is the opening onto life. It is how you first met nourishment, and how you still take in what is new: tastes, ideas, impressions. The teeth are the solid door in that opening. They are how you bite into a decision and how you hold your ground.

This page offers a symbolic and emotional perspective. It is meant to complement medical care, never to replace it. A sore that does not heal, a swelling with fever, or a tooth that will not let you sleep needs a dentist or a doctor.

## What the mouth represents

The source calls the mouth a bridge between the inner life and the world outside. Through it you speak, with the lips, the tongue and the voice, and you let thoughts and feelings leave. It stands for intimacy and for the space you need around you. Appetite, desire, expectation and the pleasure of living show themselves here.

It is a two-way road. The book plays on the French words for a path and for a voice, *voie* and *voix*. Trouble at the mouth is read as having an inner face and an outer one. The way you chew is taken as a picture of the way you live. Swallowing food without chewing is read as impulsiveness, with little patience for detail. Chewing without end is read as perfectionism: life is taken apart until you no longer taste it, and the past is turned over again and again. Very large bites are "a double mouthful": too many responsibilities, several projects moving at once. Very small bites are holding back, from [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of launching into a task that feels too hard.

## What the teeth represent

The teeth symbolise decisions. They are the hard gate that lets you bite into life with a full mouth, as the French saying has it. Inner reality and outer reality both pass through them. A sound, hard tooth is read as the capacity to welcome new ideas, love and inner nourishment, and as balance.

A tooth that is altered, even by a decay you cannot yet see, is read as a weak affirmation of yourself. The reality in front of you feels unacceptable. You fear taking your place, with the responsibilities that come with it. Autonomy is hard. Wanting something and reaching it do not meet. The source still asks you to stay open to the means that exist for getting through a delicate situation, even when the decision is hard.

For many animals the teeth are also the defence. If you feel in danger and do not know how to react, the reading says the teeth react for you. They stand for the will to go forward, to do a thing properly, and to give your thoughts and feelings a life outside you.

## Caring for the mouth from the inside

Decay, infection, grinding, injury and many ordinary dental causes are real. The emotional perspective adds a question: *what am I taking in, and what decision am I refusing to bite into?*

- **Taste one mouthful.** The source asks you to eat slowly enough to taste, instead of gobbling or picking the meal apart.
- **Notice the size of the bite.** Too much at once, or almost nothing, is read as the size of what you are willing to take on.
- **Name one decision.** The teeth are the place of the decision you keep postponing.
- **Speak as well as swallow.** The mouth is also the way feelings leave. A thought that never becomes a word stays in the doorway.
- **See a dentist for the tooth.** The meaning does not fill a cavity or settle an infection.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What am I taking in too fast, or chewing over until the taste has gone?
- Which new idea or sensation am I refusing to let into my mouth?
- Where am I hesitating to bite into a decision that is actually mine?
- Do I feel I have to defend myself, and have I no other way than the teeth?
- Am I carrying too many projects at once, as if I had taken a double mouthful?
- What would it be like to taste one thing slowly, and then say what I think?

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A mouth ulcer, lump or red patch that has not healed after three weeks.
- Difficulty swallowing, or pain that stops you eating or drinking.
- Swelling of the face, a fever, or a tooth pain that keeps you awake.
- Bleeding gums that do not settle with ordinary care.
- A broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, or an injury to the jaw.
- White patches, or a sore that bleeds, especially if you smoke or drink heavily.
