**In short**

Spiritually, plantar warts are often linked to fear about the future and about your responsibilities, a quiet call for help, and a habit of comparing your abilities with other people's until every step hurts.

## What plantar warts are

A plantar wart, or verruca, is a small, rough growth on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Because it is pressed inwards by the weight of the body, it often looks flat, with hard skin around it and sometimes tiny black dots in the centre. It can hurt when you stand or walk on it, a little like a stone in the shoe. Verrucas spread through direct contact and on wet floors, such as swimming pools and changing rooms, and they are common in children and teenagers.

Many verrucas go away on their own, although this can take months or even years. A pharmacist can suggest treatments such as salicylic acid or freezing sprays, and a GP or podiatrist can offer cryotherapy or other options when they persist or hurt. People with diabetes or poor circulation should not treat foot warts themselves. A verruca is easy to confuse with a [**corn or callus**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/legs-and-feet/corns-and-calluses), and [**warts**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/warts) elsewhere on the skin have their own page.

## The emotional meaning of plantar warts

The feet carry you forward and keep you in contact with the ground, as the [**legs and feet**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/legs-and-feet) page explains. Spiritually, a wart under the foot is linked to fears about where you are heading and about the responsibilities waiting for you there. It can be read as a way of calling for help without saying so.

### A direction that hurts

The pain of a verruca makes itself felt with each step. The spiritual interpretation hears in it a certain [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) about the way you see life. The question is which road you feel you have to take, even though it hurts or frustrates you. You may let small obstacles stop you too easily. You may also put other people's needs ahead of your own, so that your own path keeps waiting.

### Comparing your feet with other people's

Plantar warts are also linked to feeling devalued in your physical abilities, especially in sport. This can happen to people who are very good, well above average, because they demand that they always be the best and perform the same way in every situation. You may feel that your feet "do not do as well" as everyone else's. In Quebec French, to play hockey "like a foot" is to play badly. That expression sums up the comparison: you measure yourself against others and feel far below them.

### Playing a role to be accepted

Behind the comparison there is often a role you play so that people will accept you. Frustrations build up instead of being said. You feel vulnerable, and, like the foot that rests on the ground, you rest on people or things outside yourself rather than on your own base.

## Left side or right side?

In the spiritual interpretation of the [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body), the right side carries action, logic, direction and the relationship with men in your life, while the left side carries feelings, intuition, receiving and the relationship with women.

- **A verruca on the right foot** may ask about the direction you have chosen in work or in action, and about performance, rivalry or a father figure you compare yourself with.
- **A verruca on the left foot** may ask about how you are moving forward emotionally, whether you can receive support, and the women who have shaped your sense of worth.

## A gentler way to hold it

The body's message here is that there is no need to hurt yourself this much, and that you can move through life with trust. The inner step is to accept your strengths and your weaknesses together, and to keep going at your own pace.

- **Name the direction that frustrates you.** Fear about the future is easier to face once it has words.
- **Let a small obstacle be small.** Notice when a minor setback stops you for longer than it needs to.
- **Put one of your own needs first.** Other people's needs do not always have to come before yours.
- **Drop the comparison for a day.** Your feet, and your abilities, do not have to match anyone else's.
- **Lower the bar from "always the best".** Doing well is enough; perfect every time is a weight.
- **Find one support in yourself.** Lean on your own ground before you lean on others.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Which direction am I supposed to take that hurts or frustrates me?
- What am I afraid of when I think about my future and my responsibilities?
- Do I let small obstacles stop me, or put everyone else's needs before mine?
- Where do I compare my body or my abilities with other people's and come out smaller?
- Am I playing a role so that people will accept me?
- What do I lean on outside myself, instead of standing on my own feet?

***Affirmation ***

> “I accept my strengths and my weaknesses together. I can move forward with confidence, one step at a time.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A verruca on the foot when you have diabetes or poor circulation. Do not treat it yourself; ask a GP or podiatrist first.
- A growth that bleeds, changes shape or colour, itches, or keeps growing. A doctor should look at it to rule out other skin conditions.
- A verruca that is very painful, spreading, or has not gone after several months of treatment.
- Redness, heat, pus or swelling around a verruca, which can mean infection.
- Many warts at once, or warts when your immune system is weakened.

## **Related conditions**

**Athlete's foot**

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection between the toes. It is read as an irritated mind, a feeling of being unable to advance, and the wish to be adored the way a successful athlete is, while you feel banished instead.

**Corns and calluses**

Spiritually, corns and calluses are often linked to apprehension about moving forward, a friction that keeps repeating, and, for a painful corn, a deep guilt or inner pain that has hardened instead of being said.

**Warts**

Spiritually, warts are often linked to barriers built from hurt and resentment, to shame about parts of yourself you judge ugly, and to harsh self-criticism. Where they appear adds a nuance, from the hands to the feet to the face.
