**In short**

Spiritually, ankle pain is often linked to how flexible you can stay while changing direction, to decisions and commitments, and to whether you lean on yourself or on other people.

## What ankle pain is

Ankle pain is pain in the joint where the leg meets the foot, or in the ligaments and tendons around it. The most common cause is a [**sprain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/sprain), when the foot rolls and the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn. Other causes include a fracture, tendon problems such as Achilles tendinopathy, arthritis, [**gout**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/gout) and, after repeated sprains, a loose or "weak" ankle that gives way easily. Swollen ankles without pain can come from standing, heat, pregnancy or medicines, and sometimes from heart, kidney or vein problems.

Most sprains heal with rest, ice, compression and elevation, followed by gentle exercises to rebuild strength and balance. A doctor may arrange an X-ray if a bone may be broken. A physiotherapist can help with an ankle that keeps giving way. Rarely, a badly torn ligament or a fracture needs a cast or surgery.

## The emotional meaning of ankle pain

The ankle is very flexible and mobile. It holds up the body and takes great pressure. Spiritually, it is a bridge between you and the earth, the place where you feel grounded and where energy travels up and down. It is where you show your ability to move forward, to stand up and stay standing, stable and anchored.

### Decisions and changes of direction

The ankle carries out every change of direction, so it stands for your decisions and commitments, made in line with your beliefs and values. Any pain or injury there touches your ability to stay flexible while you turn. In French, you no longer know "which foot to dance on": you cannot tell where you stand. Should you stay or should you go?

### Measuring up and letting go

The French phrase "not reaching someone's ankle" means feeling you do not measure up to them. You may feel unsettled next to people you admire, such as your parents, and find it hard to detach from them, especially your mother.

### What slows the energy

Fear of what is coming, rigidity about a decision, going too fast without thinking, fear of present or future responsibilities, or a sense of being unsteady can all slow the flow of energy in the ankles. You may feel guilty about taking a certain direction, or feel obliged to take it. Like a caterpillar, you may be afraid to leave the cocoon. Perhaps you need to lean on new, more open and flexible ways of seeing things.

### Leaning on yourself or on others

The ankles show whether you can rely on yourself and your inner resources, or whether you tend to lean, even cling, on others. Weak ankles that are easily hurt raise one question: is my ability to support myself low, and do I always need a person or an institution to take charge of me?

## Sprain, fracture and swelling

- **A sprain:** the energy twists in the ankle, and the structure that supports you is bent out of shape. Nothing feels clear any more. The pressure is too strong and you do not know which way to turn. Your movements may be restricted, because someone stops you or does not give permission. You may rely on others' judgement rather than your own, and need to become firmer and more involved, physically and emotionally, in your relationships. In French, *fouler* (to sprain) echoes *refouler* (to hold down): emotions pushed down so hard that the ankle gives. See the page on [**sprains**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/sprain).
- **An ankle that gives way or breaks:** there is no solid base any more, and a change of direction is needed. It may feel as if life is collapsing, but it is more a picture that something is wrong than a real collapse of the person. A fracture points to a deep change that is needed for your well-being. You may think others are stopping you, when you are the one who needs to change course. Your honour, safety, aims and direction are at stake.
- **Swelling and oedema:** a surplus of emotion that makes you stagnate instead of going forward. Worrying and turning the same negative thoughts over keeps you in place.

Whatever the problem, the period of rest that follows can give your body and your inner self time to take in what needs to change. Ask which situation or relationship makes you feel chained, and what you gain from being kept still.

## Left side or right side?

In this approach, the right side of the body is the masculine, active side and the left side the feminine, receptive side, for men and women alike. See [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

- **Right ankle:** decisions and changes of direction in action and work, or with the men in your life, such as a father or partner.
- **Left ankle:** flexibility in your emotional life, in receiving support, or with the women in your life, often the mother.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Welcome what is on the road.** Accept what life brings, rather than bracing against it.
- **Make one decision.** If you are torn between staying and going, name the choice clearly.
- **Bend a little.** Look for a more open way of seeing a situation where you have been rigid.
- **Lean on yourself.** Notice one place where you could trust your own judgement.
- **Let the emotion move.** Say or write what you have been holding down.
- **Use the rest.** Let a forced pause become time to see which path suits you best.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Should I stay or should I go, and what makes it hard to choose?
- Do I feel I do not measure up to someone I admire, perhaps a parent?
- Am I rigid about a decision, or rushing ahead without thinking?
- Do I trust other people's judgement more than my own?
- Do I feel someone is stopping me from moving, when I may be the one who needs to change direction?
- In which situation or relationship do I feel chained?

***Affirmation ***

> “I welcome what life puts on my road. I lean on myself and follow the path that suits me best.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- You cannot put weight on the ankle, heard a crack, or the ankle looks deformed. Go to urgent care or A&E.
- Numbness, tingling, or a foot that is cold, pale or blue.
- A hot, red, swollen ankle without injury, or with a fever. This can be infection or gout.
- Swelling of both ankles with breathlessness. See a doctor, as this can be a heart, kidney or liver problem.
- A painful, swollen calf above the ankle. This can be a clot. Seek urgent care.
- A sprain that is not improving after a week, or an ankle that keeps giving way.

## **Related conditions**

**Osteoarthritis**

Osteoarthritis is often read as a hardening of attitudes. Rigid thinking, pushing beyond our limits without rest, perfectionism and resentment towards authority may slowly stiffen the joints.

**Sprain**

Spiritually, a sprain is often linked to resistance. You put the brakes on a direction (the ankle) or on what you are doing (the wrist), until the pressure lands on the ligaments.

[Sprain](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/sprain)

**Foot pain**

Spiritually, foot pain is often linked to a conflict about the direction you are taking, a fear of the future and its surprises, a past that is hard to leave, and a need for more stability, often with the mother somewhere in the picture.

**Heel pain**

Spiritually, heel pain is often linked to a lack of support, uncertainty about the future and a past you are still leaning on. A heel spur adds the feeling of having no roots and no clear direction.

**Achilles tendon**

The Achilles tendon joins calf to heel and carries enormous load. Pain there is read as thoughts and desires that cannot land, a heavy burden on a hollow inside, and a wish to rise that obstacles keep postponing.
