# **Legs and feet: emotional and spiritual meaning**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of the legs and the feet: what they may say about moving forward, standing your ground, and the contact you keep with the earth.

The legs carry the body from one place to another. The thighs supply much of the strength, the knees bend and take the shock, and the feet meet the ground. A break, a clot, a knee that gives way and a foot wound that will not heal are medical matters. Sudden weakness of the legs with trouble controlling the bladder is an emergency.

In the emotional reading, the legs are your movement and your autonomy. They take you forward or backward. They give you a direction of your own, stability, and a firm base. The feet are the contact with the nourishing earth, and with the mother.

This page offers a symbolic and emotional perspective. It is meant to complement medical care, never to replace it. A swollen calf, a leg you cannot feel, or sudden weakness with back pain needs urgent care.

## What the legs and thighs represent

The legs represent the power and the capacity to advance in life, to go forward while leaving the past behind. They let you go toward people or stay away. The source also ties them to the mother, the mother earth. The left leg is the emotional side: not being able to go somewhere even though you want to. The right leg is the rational side: not wanting to go somewhere even though you should. They reflect the orientation you take in work, family, and the directions required to get there, and the whole domain of relationships around you.

A problem in the legs can mean you are too rooted in the daily round, the routine, the comfort zone. Weak legs mean little energy circulating there: a lack of assurance, an inability to stay standing and to be strong in front of a situation or a person. You then tend to be [**dependent**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/dependence) on others. You look for support and motivation outside, instead of inside.

Small legs are read as difficulty being plugged into the physical, material world, and a wish to delegate those responsibilities. The opposite size is a heavier rooting. The entry treats the size as information, not as a judgement of a body.

The thigh holds the muscles of movement and of the force to go forward. Strong thighs are read as a person well rooted, with reserves for authority and for an inner evolution. Staying inactive too long, the source says, risks storing reserves you do not need. Either you want to do something and cannot, or someone wants to force you into what does not suit you. You fear taking your place. Situations from youth, above all with your parents, feel unjust, and you have not accepted them. [**Resentment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/resentment) lives there. You may have been obliged to separate from someone dear. Lacking something is frightening, so you make reserves, and you go on transporting that extra material in the thighs. It often feels "too late" to say or do the thing. Anger, resentment and frustration come from the impression of working without much success.

## Knees and feet

The knees are the joints you kneel on. They are read as yielding to what is above you, and also as the movement and the direction that are under way. When you walk, the knees draw the whole body into the movement. They show your degree of flexibility, and they absorb the shock when the pressure is too strong. They also stand for perseverance, and for indecision. They are affected if you belittle yourself over your body or your sporting performance.

Difficulty bending the knees shows a certain rigidity. It can come from an ego that is very strong and proud. You fear losing your freedom. A knee that bends easily is a sign, in this reading, of humility and flexibility, and of ease in listening to the inner voice. The knees maintain your social position. Good knees mean you are open to the people around you and to change. The page on [**knee pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/knee-pain) takes one common condition further. The [**joints and bones**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones) are the wider structure.

The feet are your contact with the nourishing earth. They are in relation with the mother, and with conflicts with her, which can go back as far as conception. They give you stability as you move toward a goal, a desire or a direction, and they help you feel safe in your relation with the universe. They represent the position you take toward the situations that present themselves, and your social position. Feet turned outward are read as confusion about the direction, or energy scattered across projects. Feet turned inward are a closure, a resistance to the directions you might take.

## Caring for the legs from the inside

Clots, arthritis, nerve compression, injury and circulation disease are real reasons legs hurt or fail. The emotional perspective adds a question: *am I able to move, and whose ground am I standing on?*

- **Ask whether you cannot go, or will not go.** Left and right are the book's two answers.
- **Find one support inside.** Dependence, in this reading, is looking for your strength in other people.
- **See what you are storing in the thighs.** Reserves against the fear of lacking are the picture.
- **Notice whether the knee will bend.** Pride and flexibility are the pair the knee is given.
- **Feel the ground.** The feet are the contact with the earth and with the mother, not a test of worth.
- **Treat a swollen calf and sudden weakness as medical.** Meaning does not wait out a clot or a spinal emergency.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where am I rooted in a routine that no longer takes me anywhere?
- Do I want to go somewhere and feel I cannot, or do I refuse to go somewhere I should?
- Whose support am I waiting for, instead of finding it in myself?
- What from my youth, especially with my parents, am I still carrying in my thighs?
- Where is my pride making it hard to bend?
- What ground am I actually standing on, and whose direction is it?

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A leg you cannot stand on after a fall, or a joint that looks deformed.
- One calf that is swollen, hot or painful. This can be a clot. Seek urgent care.
- Sudden weakness of one or both legs, especially with back pain and trouble passing urine. Call emergency services.
- A foot wound that is not healing, particularly if you have diabetes.
- A knee that locks, gives way, or swells after a twist.
- Pain at night, or pain with redness and fever.
