**In short**

Spiritually, right rib pain is often linked to pressure in the outer world. It can point to performing, keeping a good rating in other people's eyes, comparing yourself with someone stronger, often a man, and a protection worn thin by too much effort.

## What right rib pain is

Right rib pain is pain in or around the ribs on the right side of the chest, from under the armpit to the lower edge of the rib cage. As on the left, the usual causes are a bruised, cracked or broken rib after a fall or a blow, a rib cracked by a long [**cough**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/respiratory-system/cough), a strained muscle between the ribs, or costochondritis at the front, where the ribs meet the breastbone. Pain that is sharp when you breathe in, cough or twist, and tender when you press, usually comes from the chest wall.

The lower right ribs shelter the liver and the gallbladder, so pain under them is not always a rib problem. [**Gallstones**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/liver-and-gallbladder/gallstones) can cause a strong, steady pain under the right ribs, often after a meal and sometimes spreading to the right shoulder blade; with fever, shivering or yellow skin, it needs urgent care. An inflamed or swollen liver can cause a dull ache here. The right lung can cause sharp pain on breathing from pneumonia, a clot or a collapsed lung. Heart pain is not always on the left: chest pressure with breathlessness or sweating needs emergency help whichever side it is on. [**Shingles**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/shingles) can begin as a band of pain on one side. A [**side stitch**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/muscles-and-tendons/side-stitch) during exercise is harmless and passes with rest.

Bruised and broken ribs heal in about three to six weeks with pain relief, rest from heavy effort, and regular deep breaths to keep the lungs clear. See [**rib pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rib-pain) for more.

## The emotional meaning of right rib pain

Spiritually, the ribs protect what is vital. When one cracks or aches, the protection has thinned, and you are exposed to outside pressure on your independence, your need for space and your place. On the right, the active, masculine side of logic, action, decisions and the material world, the question becomes how you defend yourself in the outer world: at work, in your plans, and with the men in your life. See [**the left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

### Pressure to perform

A rib gives way when the pressure is too great. On the right, that pressure often has a name: a deadline, a target, a boss, a rival, a business that depends on you. You may have pushed past your limits for months, and the body draws the line where you would not. Ask whether you needed to step back from that pressure and could not, and whether it comes from outside or from your own demands.

### Keeping a good rating

There is a French pun here. *Cote*, almost the same word as *côte*, the rib, means a rating. Spiritually, wanting to keep "a good rating" with others can push you to live by the image you think you must give rather than by your deeper values. On the right, the image is often professional: the competent one, the one who copes, the one who never asks for help. Right rib pain may ask what you would do differently if no one were grading you.

### Side by side with someone stronger

*Côte à côte*, "side by side", brings in comparison. On the right, you may stand next to a man in your family, a father, a brother, a cousin, and never quite feel you measure up. Or the comparison may be with a colleague whose success seems to make yours smaller. You may underestimate yourself, or feel that others diminish you, and wonder whether you are really respected for what you do.

### Obstacles ahead

Pain at the front of the ribs is linked to tension about the future: steps you must take, or obstacles an authority could put in the way of your projects. On the right, that may be a planning decision, a manager's approval, a bank, an exam board. You may feel caught between your plans and the forces that could block them, with little control over the outcome.

### Rigid and rebellious

The ribs can also sit with self-doubt and a tendency to rebel, together with a stiffness that drowns out your inner voice. On the right, the rational side may have taken over: every move calculated, every reaction controlled. Spiritually, the invitation is to live a little more spontaneously, and to hear what you actually think beneath what you believe you should think.

### Men, rivalry and roles

The right side holds your relationship with the masculine, learned largely from your father. For a man, right rib pain may touch rivalry and the need to show his strength. For a woman, it may touch her working life and the roles she is expected to fill. For anyone, it may ask who sets the standard you are trying to meet.

## The other side

[**Left rib pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/left-rib-pain) places the pressure in your emotional life: protecting the heart, comparing yourself to a woman close to you, and a sorrow you have kept inside. Where the right ribs ask how you defend yourself in action and whose rating you are chasing, the left ask how you protect your heart and whether you let love in. The [**rib pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rib-pain) page brings both together.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Name the pressure.** Write down who or what has been pressing on you, and whether it is theirs or yours.
- **Drop one performance.** Choose one place where you can stop proving yourself.
- **Live by one value.** Act once this week from what you truly think, not from the image you want to keep.
- **Speak plainly.** Say what you think at work, and listen to the answer.
- **Stop the comparison.** Come back to your own path when you catch yourself measuring.
- **Take your power back.** You are the one who decides how much weight others have over you.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Who or what has been pressing on me so hard, at work or in my plans, that something had to give?
- Is that pressure coming from others, or am I putting it on myself?
- With whom do I measure myself "side by side", and feel I must prove I am as capable?
- Am I living by the image I think I must give, or by what I truly value?
- Do I worry about obstacles an authority could put in the way of my projects?
- Am I so controlled in how I act that I no longer hear my own inner voice?

***Affirmation***

> “I stop comparing myself and act from what I truly value. I say what I think, I listen too, and I decide how much power others have over me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Pain under the right ribs that lasts more than a few hours, often after a meal, or spreads to the right shoulder blade, especially with fever, shivering, or yellow skin or eyes. This can be the gallbladder or the liver. Seek urgent care.
- Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes, dark urine or pale stools. See a doctor promptly.
- Chest pain or pressure with breathlessness, sweating, feeling sick, or pain spreading to an arm, the jaw or the back. Heart pain is not always on the left. Call 999, 911 or 112 at once.
- Shortness of breath that is getting worse, coughing up blood, or pain after a serious fall or road accident. Go to A&E or call emergency services, as a broken rib can damage a lung or the liver.
- Sudden sharp pain on one side of the chest with breathlessness. This can be a collapsed lung or a clot in the lung. Call emergency services.
- A high temperature, chills or coloured phlegm while a rib is healing, which can mean a chest infection.
- A band of burning pain on one side of the chest, followed by a rash. This can be shingles, and treatment works best when started early.
- Rib pain with no injury that does not improve, keeps coming back, or comes with weight loss or night pain.

## **Related conditions**

**Left rib pain**

Spiritually, left rib pain is often linked to how you protect your heart. It can point to pressure in your emotional life that went past your limits, to comparing yourself with someone close, often a woman, and to a sorrow you would like to cry out.

**Gallstones**

Gallstones are hardened deposits in the bile. They are read as bitterness, resentment and anger that have been kept for years until they take a stony form, and as strength you stored instead of using.

**Side stitch**

Spiritually, a side stitch is often linked to going too fast, pushing yourself to meet outside standards of success, and not listening to your inner voice, until the body makes you slow your pace.
