## **Conditions**

Explore the emotional reading of each joints and bones condition.

### **Joints**

Joint pain and stiffness, often linked to flexibility, rigid thinking and emotions held back for a long time.

**Knee pain**

Knee pain is often read through the image of kneeling. It may reflect pride or rigidity, the weight of responsibilities, and a conflict between our own individuality and the group we belong to.

**Osteoarthritis**

Osteoarthritis is often read as a hardening of attitudes. Rigid thinking, pushing beyond our limits without rest, perfectionism and resentment towards authority may slowly stiffen the joints.

Your skeleton is made of more than 200 bones, linked by joints that allow you to bend, turn, walk, grasp and carry. Bones are living tissue: they constantly renew themselves, store minerals and, in their marrow, produce the blood cells that protect you. Joints, cushioned by cartilage and fluid, give your movements their ease and fluidity.

In the emotional and symbolic approach to health, bones represent our deepest structure, and joints represent our flexibility. When joints stiffen or bones weaken, it can be an invitation to look at where we have become rigid, what we resist, and how we relate to the rules and authority around us.

This page offers a symbolic and emotional perspective. It is meant to complement medical care, never to replace it. If you have a hot, swollen joint, severe pain after an injury or joint pain with fever, see a doctor.

## What your joints and bones represent

Bones are the solid framework of the body: the pillars, the tree of life. Their marrow is seen as the deepest core of our being. In this reading, bones relate to our fundamental structure, the frame on which our whole being is built. They also relate to the structure of laws and principles that we deal with every day, and to the authorities that apply them: parents, teachers, institutions.

Joints represent ease, mobility, adaptability and flexibility. They give movement its grace and fluidity. Because bone is the densest, most fundamental form of energy in our body, joint problems are often read as a form of resistance, holding back or stiffness in our thoughts, our actions or the expression of emotions we have pushed down.

## Common emotional themes

### Rigid thinking

Stiff or painful joints are often associated with rigidity: fixed thoughts, attitudes or behaviours. We may be too demanding, stubborn, intolerant, moralising, critical or proud, towards ourselves, others or life's situations. The emotions we would normally express then find their way out through the body.

### Resisting change

Joint inflammation may appear when we are afraid to move forward, find it hard to change direction, hesitate, or refuse to let go and trust life. We may pretend to be emotionally detached, and hold back our spontaneity.

### Frustrations not communicated

Joint problems are often linked to anger that comes from not expressing our frustrations and disappointments. When emotions and shocks have been carried for a long time, they can become too much to bear.

### Saying "yes" when we mean "no"

Another theme is doing things more to please others than out of real wish. We say "yes" out of duty, when deep down it is "no". We may feel exploited, unappreciated or not loved for who we are, which brings disappointment and bitterness.

### Outer authority and inner voice

We may live too much according to outside structures and authority, instead of listening to our inner voice, which in this reading should be our highest authority. We may feel restricted by the system we live in and criticise the authority that limits our freedom.

## Reading the signs: which joint is affected

In this approach, the joint that is affected can add nuance. Take these as questions to explore:

- **The hands and fingers:** am I really doing what I want to do? Do I have a good grip on my own affairs?
- **The wrists, elbows and shoulders:** is there an activity or work I need to stop, or that I am tired of?
- **The elbows:** am I inflexible about changes of direction in my life?
- **The hips:** am I angry that others do not see my needs without my having to ask?
- **The knees:** before whom or what do I feel I must kneel, and before whom do I refuse to bend?
- **Cracking joints:** am I blaming myself for things I did or said, even though nobody reproached me?

## Caring for your joints from the inside

The idea is not to blame yourself. Age, genetics, injuries, weight, activity levels and many medical factors play a real role in joint and bone problems. The emotional perspective simply adds another question: *where in my life could I be more flexible?*

A few gentle practices can support this inner work:

- **Soften your thinking.** Try seeing one situation from a different point of view this week.
- **Communicate your frustrations.** Saying what disappoints you, calmly, prevents it from crystallising.
- **Say "no" when you mean no.** Acting from real wish rather than duty frees a lot of energy.
- **Listen to your inner authority.** Your inner voice knows what is right for you.
- **Take off your blinkers.** Looking at life more positively opens up new directions.
- **Keep moving.** Gentle, regular movement nourishes the joints and keeps them flexible.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where in my life am I being rigid, with myself or with others?
- Is there a change of direction that I am resisting?
- Do I say "yes" out of duty when I really mean "no"?
- Am I living according to outside rules and authority, rather than my inner voice?
- Which frustrations or disappointments have I not communicated?
- Before whom or what do I feel I must bow, and before whom do I refuse to bend?

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A hot, red, very swollen joint, especially with fever. Seek urgent medical care.
- Severe pain, deformity or inability to move a limb after a fall or injury.
- Joint pain with fever, rash or feeling generally unwell.
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes, or several joints that are swollen.
- Bone pain that is constant, gets worse at night or comes with weight loss.
- A fracture after a minor fall, which may be a sign of bone fragility.
