**In short**

Spiritually, hip pain is often linked to hesitating at a turning point. It can point to the question of whether you may live for yourself or must keep sacrificing yourself for others, to rigidity after a hurt, and to feeling worn out from giving.

## What hip pain is

Hip pain is pain felt in the hip joint or around it: in the groin, on the outside of the hip, or in the buttock. Pain in the groin usually comes from the joint itself. Pain on the outer side often comes from the tendons and the fluid-filled sacs, or bursae, that cushion them.

Common causes include [**osteoarthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoarthritis), which wears the cartilage of the joint with age, greater trochanteric pain syndrome (tendon or bursa irritation on the outside of the hip), strains from sport or overuse, and pain referred from the [**lower back**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/lower-back-pain), as in [**sciatica**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/sciatica). In older people, a fall can break the hip, especially when the bones are thinned by [**osteoporosis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoporosis). In children, a limp or hip pain can come from inflammation, infection or a problem with the growing bone, and always needs checking. Most hip pain improves with relative rest, painkillers, gentle exercise and physiotherapy. Severe osteoarthritis can be treated with a hip replacement.

## The emotional meaning of hip pain

The movement of the legs, and so the way you walk, starts at the hips. The legs let you go forward freely, which links the hips to autonomy. Spiritually, hip pain is often linked to holding yourself back from going ahead, or from taking an important decision.

### A turning point you hesitate to take

Hip pain often appears when you begin a personal journey and start to ask why and how things are as they are. Old certainties loosen, and you are unsure which way to turn. You may [**worry**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/worry) about the future, become [**anxious**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anxiety) each time a big decision comes up, and feel that you are going nowhere, that nothing will come of your efforts, or even that you are "good for nothing". Can I really reach the dreams that are dear to my heart?

### Living for yourself or sacrificing yourself

At the centre there is often a great duality. Do I have the right to live for myself, or must I keep sacrificing myself for others, as I always have? That split can keep you from moving at all. If you go on living under pressure, along a road you dislike, the strain grows. You may also feel you must give in, against your will, to someone or something stronger than you.

### Rigidity after a hurt

Hip trouble shows stiffness and resistance: an inflexibility towards a person or a situation. It may follow a moment when you felt betrayed or [**abandoned**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/abandonment), a hurt deep enough to make you question all your relationships. You may want to set "new rules" to protect yourself and never be wounded like that again.

### Needs that no one sees

When the hips ache, as with arthritis, the body points to an imbalance inside. You may feel unable to put forward your ideas and your personality, and so turn to submission. Then [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) builds because others do not see your needs. You would like them to meet your expectations without your having to ask. Where there is pain, ask whether a little [**guilt**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt) is mixed in too.

### Intimacy and pleasure

Hips that hurt or refuse to move can also raise questions about pleasure and closeness. You may be holding back your sexual pleasure out of fear or guilt, see yourself as a poor partner, or find it hard to welcome the other. Intimacy may frighten you, so that moving away from the person you love feels easier than facing what you dread. Some people notice that weight around the hips seems to keep a little distance between them and the other.

This can come with a sense of powerlessness, sexual or wider: struggling to accept yourself with your tastes, wishes and pleasures, or no longer feeling able to take your place and to stand up to someone. Rules you set yourself, or took on from society, may keep you from what could bring you pleasure. The question is where you are setting your limits, and whether you are living your life in your head instead of in your feelings.

### Worn or weakened hips

When the hip wears down or loses bone, it is linked to a shaken sense of security. You feel powerless and no longer dare to move. You may feel emptied, as if you had given a great deal and are now worn out.

## Left side or right side?

The side that hurts adds a nuance. In this approach, the right side carries the active, "masculine" principle and the left side the receptive, "feminine" one, in men and women alike. See [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body) for more.

- **Right hip pain** is linked to decisions and direction: choosing the way, acting on it, and your place at work or towards authority. You may be hesitating to take a step that would assert you.
- **Left hip pain** is linked to feelings and receiving: expressing what you feel, following your intuition, and letting yourself be cared for. You may be giving so much that you no longer receive.

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to blame yourself for a painful hip. Wear, injury, tendons, bones and the lower back all play a real role, and the warning signs above need a doctor. The emotional perspective invites you to look at how you are moving forward.

- **Put down the role of everyone's mother.** You do not have to look after everybody.
- **Let yourself receive.** Accept care, help and love, and let them feed you.
- **Say your needs.** Others cannot meet expectations they have never heard.
- **Be more flexible in how you decide.** A decision does not have to be perfect to be the next right step.
- **Drop the burdens you no longer need.** Lighter responsibilities make choices easier.
- **Look at your limits.** Ask which of your rules protect you, and which only keep you from living.
- **Thank life for what it teaches.** Each experience can help you find your balance and go ahead with trust.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Which important decision am I holding back from, and what am I afraid of if I take it?
- Do I believe I have the right to live for myself, or only to sacrifice myself for others?
- Have I been hurt, betrayed or left, and made new rules so it never happens again?
- Am I angry that others do not see my needs, while I never say them out loud?
- Do I keep a distance from the person I love because closeness frightens me?
- Do I feel used up from giving, and do I let myself receive?

***Affirmation ***

> “I no longer have to be everyone's mother. I let myself receive, I make my decisions with flexibility, and I move forward with trust.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A fall followed by hip or groin pain, being unable to stand or put weight on the leg, or a leg that looks shorter or turned outwards. Call emergency services, as this can be a broken hip.
- Hip pain with fever, chills, or a hot, red or swollen joint. This can be an infection.
- A child or teenager who limps, refuses to walk, or has hip, thigh or knee pain. This needs a doctor the same day.
- Hip pain with numbness, weakness in the leg, or pain that runs below the knee.
- Pain that is worse at night, or comes with unexplained weight loss.
- Hip pain that has not improved after two weeks, or that makes walking, stairs, putting on socks or sleep difficult.

## **Related conditions**

**Lower back pain**

Lower back pain is often read as a sign of insecurity, both material and emotional. It may reflect the fear of lacking, the feeling of being the only pillar, and carrying other people's problems on our back.

**Sciatica**

Sciatica is often read as a pain that stops you in your tracks. A life transition, money worries and the feeling that someone else holds the power can leave you rigid, angry and unsure which way to go.

[Sciatica](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/sciatica)

**Osteoarthritis**

Osteoarthritis is often read as a hardening of attitudes. Rigid thinking, pushing beyond our limits without rest, perfectionism and resentment towards authority may slowly stiffen the joints.

[Osteoarthritis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoarthritis)

**Osteoporosis**

Osteoporosis is often read as a deep loss of the wish to be fully here. Discouragement, old beliefs that no longer fit, and the feeling of no longer being who you were may thin the inner structure as well as the bone.
