The emotional and spiritual meaning of Parkinson's disease: a tremor and a slowing of movement, and a life that has felt unable to go forward.

Nerves and tension Also known as: Parkinson's disease, Shaking palsy

**In short**

Parkinson's disease wears down the brain cells that coordinate movement. It is read as a fear of what is ahead, and as a gesture that was held back for a long time.

## What Parkinson's is

Parkinson's disease is a loss of nerve cells in the parts of the brain that control movement. Tremor, stiffness, and slowness are the usual signs. The hands and the head are often where it shows. It is more common with age, and a little more common in men. A shake from nerves, cold, or caffeine is a different thing. It is not an early form of this illness, and it is not diagnosed as Parkinson's later because it happened often. Treatment replaces a chemical the brain no longer makes enough of, and physiotherapy helps the body keep its strategies. Neither one is replaced by deciding to trust life.

## The emotional meaning of Parkinson's

Spiritually, the tremor is the sense of a danger waiting, for you or for someone you love. Loss of control, insecurity, and the powerlessness to go forward sit with it. The wish to be the best, and the sense of failing at that, can be there. Life feels chaotic, and stability is wanted and hard to reach. The head nods, in this picture, as a sign of despair. [**Fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of the future, and of no longer living, makes finishing things seem pointless.

A trauma, an abuse, or a long difficulty may have left grief, frustration, guilt, rage, and a [**depression**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/depression) that ran on into exhaustion. If that past is abuse, the step is safety and help, not a search for what the tremor is teaching. A severe school, where performance came first, is one background the pages name, and a very agitated child. Being stopped from being yourself, or having to hold a gesture back, is the climate. When the nerves are described as full, the body is imagined as no longer able to carry the load.

[**Hate**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/hate) that has been stored is pictured as what moves the whole body. Set that image down. Hate does not deteriorate the nerve cells. The forbidden gesture wanting to show itself, as proof of still being alive, is a question about a movement that was never allowed. The parked car that cannot pull away is the image of a life doing sur place, revving and going nowhere.

Hands and arms are read beside a moment of wanting to push someone or something away, or to grasp and hold on, and of being unable to, in body or in conscience. Legs and feet are read the same way: wanting to flee, or to bring a person back. A partner's dying is one scene the book uses. Failing to hold them is a grief. It is not recorded in the limbs as this disease. The illness does remind a person who has tried to control everyone that other people cannot be steered. Mastery, if the word is useful, is only over one's own life. Showing the inner world, instead of proving something, is the step to take. The medicines remain how the movement is supported.

## A gentler way to hold it

- Name the danger you have been braced against, and the gesture you never made.
- Let one other person be unsteered for a day.
- A tremor that is new still belongs with a doctor, including when the feeling is recognisable.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What danger, for me or for someone I love, have I been braced against?
- Which gesture was I stopped from making, and still feel in my hands?
- Where am I trying to steer other people, when the only life I can direct is my own?

***Affirmation ***

> “I can direct my own life, and I can let other people be free.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A new tremor, slowness, stiffness, or a change in handwriting needs a doctor. Many tremors are not Parkinson's.
- A fall, a sudden confusion, or difficulty swallowing needs prompt care.
- Do not stop levodopa or any prescribed drug because a feeling seemed to explain the shaking.
- If the story underneath is abuse, get to safety and ask for help.
