# **Neuralgia: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of neuralgia: how nerve pain may relate to cut-off contact, hidden resentment, guilt and the fear of authority.

Nerves and tension Also known as: Nerve pain, Trigeminal neuralgia, Facial neuralgia, Occipital neuralgia, Post-herpetic neuralgia, Névralgie

**In short**

Spiritually, neuralgia is often linked to a break in contact, a coldness with someone that carries resentment and irritation, and to guilt and the wish to fit the rules, with the place of the pain showing which part of life is caught.

## What neuralgia is

Neuralgia is sharp, stabbing, burning or electric-shock pain that follows the path of a nerve. It comes from irritation of, pressure on, or damage to the nerve itself, rather than from the tissue around it.

The best-known form is trigeminal neuralgia, which causes sudden, severe attacks of pain in the face, cheek, jaw or teeth, often set off by touch, eating, talking, brushing the teeth or a cold wind. It is often caused by a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve, and is sometimes linked to [**multiple sclerosis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/multiple-sclerosis). Post-herpetic neuralgia is pain that persists where [**shingles**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/skin/shingles) has been. Occipital neuralgia gives shooting pain from the base of the skull over the scalp. Nerve pain can also come from a trapped nerve, as in [**sciatica**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/sciatica), from [**neuropathy**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/neuropathy), or after an injury or operation.

Ordinary painkillers often do little for nerve pain. A doctor can prescribe specific medicines, such as certain anti-epilepsy medicines or antidepressants used at low doses for pain, and may refer to a specialist. Injections or surgery help some people when medicines are not enough.

The spiritual interpretation that follows sits alongside this care. It offers another angle, for those who feel their pain also says something about how they live.

## The emotional meaning of neuralgia

Picture the nerves as the electrical wiring of the body. Neuralgia is like a bad contact somewhere along a wire: too much tension on the line, and the current sparks. Spiritually, it is read as a place where the free flow of energy and communication in you has been interrupted.

### A coldness between you and someone

When the line is cut, something is separating you from another person. A chill has settled in. Animosity, sometimes [**aggressiveness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/aggressiveness) and [**resentment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/resentment), keeps you from making contact. Your thoughts about it may feel irritating, even burning, and you may have the sense that your nerves are about to snap.

### Guilt and the pressure to fit in

Neuralgia is also linked to [**guilt**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt) and to a strong wish to stay within the norms set by society: to do what is expected, to be correct. Behind that there may be a [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of authority. Living under that pressure keeps the whole system tense.

### Feeling stuck

The deeper question is where you feel caught. A situation you cannot leave, a habit you want to drop, an inner prison you may have built yourself. [**Anxiety**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anxiety) and insecurity often sit in the same place as the pain.

## What the location may suggest

Where the pain sits shows which kind of feeling may be involved. Take these as questions, not conclusions:

- **In an arm or a hand:** a pressure, such as a commitment, or a feeling such as powerlessness, may be stopping you from taking hold of a decision or a direction that feels right. See also [**the arms and hands**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands).
- **In a leg, calf or foot:** an emotion may be holding back the next step in a new direction. See also [**the legs and feet**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/legs-and-feet).
- **In the face:** your face may have turned "to ice", hiding your feelings to protect you. Or something keeps hitting you "full in the face" that reminds you of a painful event.
- **In the teeth or jaw:** bending to others may be stirring a quiet revolt. Becoming indifferent can seem easier than having to decide. See also [**the mouth and teeth**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/mouth-and-teeth).

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Find the blocked spot.** Use the part of the body that hurts as a pointer to the area of life where anxiety or insecurity has gathered.
- **Ask where you feel stuck.** Name the situation, and the habit or behaviour you would like to leave behind.
- **Warm the cold contact.** If a coldness has set in with someone, consider what a first small step towards contact, or towards honest distance, would look like.
- **Let feelings flow.** Allow each emotion to be felt and named, so it can be accepted and gradually turned towards something useful.
- **Open the cage.** Notice the rules you obey out of fear rather than conviction, and give yourself permission to fly with your own wings.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- With whom has a coldness set in, and what has kept me from reaching out?
- Which thoughts keep burning and irritating me?
- Where am I trying hard to fit what society expects, and what do I feel guilty about?
- In which situation do I feel stuck, as if my nerves were about to snap?
- Am I hiding my feelings behind a frozen face to protect myself?
- Which behaviour or habit would I like to be free of?

***Affirmation ***

> “I notice the feelings that block my flow and let them move. I step out of the cage I built and fly with my own wings.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Facial pain together with weakness, numbness, drooping of the face, slurred speech or confusion. Call emergency services, as this can be a stroke.
- Sudden, very severe pain, or nerve pain with fever, a stiff neck or a new rash.
- Stabbing or electric-shock pain in the face, even if it comes and goes. See a GP, as specific treatments exist and ordinary painkillers often do not help.
- Nerve pain that lasts after shingles, or that stops you eating, sleeping or working.
- Numbness, weakness or problems with vision or balance alongside the pain. These need checking for an underlying cause.
- If you take medicine for nerve pain, do not stop it or change the dose because of anything you read here. Some must be reduced slowly with a doctor.

## **Related conditions**

**Sciatica**

Sciatica is often read as a pain that stops you in your tracks. A life transition, money worries and the feeling that someone else holds the power can leave you rigid, angry and unsure which way to go.

**Multiple sclerosis**

Spiritually, multiple sclerosis is often linked to a feeling of being caged and crushed, to perfectionism and doing everything alone, to the fear of falling or being let down, and to a life that has lost its sweetness.

**Neuropathy and neuritis**

Spiritually, neuropathy and neuritis are often linked to anger in the conversation you have with yourself, to feeling attacked and on guard, and to trying to control everything while staying out of sight to avoid criticism.

**Shingles**

Shingles is the chickenpox virus waking in a nerve and burning a band of skin. It is read as a break in inner communication, and a wound that made you shut the door.
