**In short**

Meningitis is an infection of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and it can be a medical emergency. Spiritually, it is linked to strong outside pressure, a hypersensitive nature that finds it hard to protect itself, and a creative part of you kept out of sight.

## What meningitis is

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes that wrap the brain and the spinal cord. It is usually caused by an infection. Viral meningitis is the more common kind and is often milder. Bacterial meningitis is rarer but can be life-threatening, sometimes within hours, and it can come with sepsis (blood poisoning). Fungi and some non-infectious causes are less frequent.

The classic signs are a high temperature, a severe [**headache**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/headaches), a [**stiff neck**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/stiff-neck), a dislike of bright light, vomiting, confusion and drowsiness. Some people develop a blotchy rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it. Babies and young children may not show these signs clearly. They may be floppy, irritable, refuse feeds or be very hard to wake. Anyone can get meningitis, but babies, young children, teenagers and young adults are most at risk.

Bacterial meningitis is treated in hospital, usually with antibiotics given straight into a vein, along with fluids and close monitoring. Close contacts may be offered antibiotics too. Some people recover fully. Others live with after-effects such as hearing loss, memory or concentration problems, or tiredness, and follow-up care helps with these. Vaccines protect against several of the bacteria that cause it.

Meningitis is an emergency first. Everything that follows is for later, when you are safe and recovering.

## The emotional meaning of meningitis

Spiritually, the meninges are the brain's protective wrapping, and meningitis is read as a crisis of protection: a sense of being unable to shield yourself from very strong pressure coming from outside, especially pressure on your thinking.

### Hypersensitive and unprotected

Meningitis is associated with a hypersensitive nature. You may feel everything more intensely than the people around you, and be shaken by things that seem trivial to them. Without a clear sense of where you end and others begin, outside demands go straight in. Thoughts crowd and jostle until the head feels squeezed. In French, to "rack your meninges" (*se creuser les méninges*) means to rack your brains, and the image fits a mind that never stops working a problem.

### Irritation with nowhere to go

Alongside that pressure there is often [**aggressiveness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/aggressiveness) and frustration that have never found words. People get on your nerves, but you do not know how to defend yourself, so the irritation stays inside. When it is not heard, it can grow into revolt, upset and sudden [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear).

### A part of you kept out of sight

A quieter theme is a part of yourself that has been denied: often the creative, sensitive, extravagant side. Blending in feels safer than being noticed. It can feel like a prison, yet looking honestly in the mirror to see who you really are can seem harder still. Staying in your head instead of going to your heart becomes a form of self-protection.

### Carrying the world

Hypersensitive people often take everything on their shoulders, as if the problems of the whole planet were theirs to fix. There can be a fear of "losing your head" or having it "cut off", for example when a job feels at risk. Sometimes the background includes having been very protected as a child and now having to learn to defend yourself, or living in a home where love feels absent or where someone constantly grates on your nerves. These are questions to explore, not judgements on a family.

### The message of protection

The message of meningitis, spiritually, is to shield yourself from blows that come from outside and to stop feeling guilty for what other people do, while still taking responsibility for your own life. Because the illness touches the body's control centre, it is read as a call to decide, deeply, to live fully: to keep your head high and let your inner strength come forward.

## A gentler way to hold it

When recovery allows, these steps may help you meet the themes above:

- **Draw a line.** Notice one situation where you have been absorbing other people's pressure, and decide what is yours to carry and what is not.
- **Put the irritation into words.** Write down what annoys you, then find one calm sentence you could say out loud.
- **Let the creative side out.** Draw, sing, dance, write or make something with your hands, purely for the pleasure of it. It gives a busy mind a chance to breathe.
- **Go from the head to the heart.** Spend a few minutes a day simply noticing what you feel, without analysing it, and let long-held emotions move.
- **Practise simply being.** Rest without a task. Trust grows slowly, and so does the feeling of being master of your own life.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where do I feel pressed from outside, especially in my thinking or my work, without knowing how to defend myself?
- Which irritation or frustration have I never managed to put into words?
- Which creative, sensitive or unusual part of me have I hidden so I can blend in?
- Am I carrying other people's problems as if they were mine to solve?
- Do I stay in my head to avoid feeling what is in my heart?
- What would it mean for me to keep my head up and take my life in hand?

***Affirmation ***

> “I protect what is mine to protect, I let others carry their own choices, and I give my creative self room to breathe.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Call 999 (UK) or 911 (US), or go to the emergency department, if you think you or a child might have meningitis. Do not wait for a rash to appear.
- A high temperature with a stiff neck, a severe headache, a dislike of bright light, vomiting, confusion or unusual sleepiness is an emergency.
- A rash that does not fade when you press a glass against it is an emergency. On darker skin, check paler areas such as the palms, the soles or inside the eyelids.
- In babies, watch for a bulging soft spot on the head, a stiff or floppy body, refusing feeds, an unusual high-pitched cry, or being hard to wake.
- Meningitis can get worse within hours. Trust your instinct if someone seems more ill than usual.
- After meningitis, follow-up checks for hearing, memory and mood are part of the care. Finish any prescribed treatment.
- Keep vaccinations up to date. Several vaccines protect against the main causes of bacterial meningitis.

## **Related conditions**

**Stiff neck**

Spiritually, a stiff neck is often linked to insecurity and to a refusal to look at every side of what you are living. You want to move forward and pull back at the same time, and the head stays fixed facing one way.

**Headaches**

Headaches are often read as a sign of mental overload. Too much thinking, self-criticism and a need to control everything can build pressure in the head when the heart is not being heard.

[Headaches](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/headaches)

**Fever**

Spiritually, fever is often linked to emotions that burn, irritation and anger that have built up until they fill the whole body, and a pause you have not allowed yourself any other way.

**Infections**

Spiritually, infections are often linked to an inner conflict you have not voiced, irritation and worry that have piled up until "I can't take any more", and a part of life that needs cleaning out.

**Inflammation**

Spiritually, inflammation is often linked to an inner fire, anger at a person or situation you will not let go of, resistance to change, and a conflict between who you are and the people around you.
