Does it matter that the pain is in my left knee, my right shoulder, my left ear? In the emotional and spiritual approach to the body, it can. Each side is given a meaning of its own, and that meaning is then laid over whatever the hurting part already stands for.

## What the left and right sides mean (and what they do not)

The left/right idea is symbolic. It is not anatomy, and it does not tell you what is wrong with an organ. A pain in the left side of the chest is not "emotional" because it is on the left, and a right-sided pain is not "about work" because it is on the right. Medicine first. Symbolism, if it helps, afterwards.

The symbolic map rests on two principles that every person carries, whatever their sex:

- **The right side of the body** stands for the **masculine principle**, the *yang* of Chinese medicine.
- **The left side of the body** stands for the **feminine principle**, the *yin*.

The brain adds a twist that is also true anatomically. Each hemisphere controls the opposite half of the body, because the nerve fibres cross over low in the brainstem. So the left hemisphere, associated with the rational, active, masculine side, drives the right half of the body. The right hemisphere, associated with the receptive, intuitive, feminine side, drives the left half. This crossing is why a [stroke](/head/stroke) in the left side of the brain often weakens the right side of the body.

Neither side is better. The point of the map is balance: the two principles complete each other.

## The right side: action, logic and direction

Spiritually, the right side is linked to courage, strength and logic. It is the side of knowledge, speech and reasoning, of autonomy and the material world. Its image is the sun. It is the part of you that takes the ideas and intuitions coming from the feminine side and puts them into action. It chooses the direction. The left hemisphere that drives it is pictured as the planner: words and numbers, facts, time, the "how" of things, the detailed steps, know-how.

The right side also carries your relationship with the masculine, both your own and that of the men in your life: your father, a partner, a brother, a boss. Much of this side is learned by watching your father, so you may share many of his traits here.

When the right side hurts, the questions it raises differ a little:

- **For a man**, it may touch a conflict with his sense of manhood, or with rivalry.
- **For a woman**, it may touch a tension around her working life, or the roles and clichés she wants to step out of.
- **For anyone**, it may point to a strain in how you act, decide and assert yourself, or in a relationship with a man who matters to you.

## The left side: feeling, intuition and receiving

Spiritually, the left side is linked to the feminine principle. It holds creativity, artistic gifts, compassion, receptivity, emotion and intuition: your inner nature. It shows itself in tenderness, sensitivity, gentleness, harmony and beauty. It is your maternal side, and its image is the moon. The right hemisphere that drives it is pictured as the receiver: it sees the whole picture, feels, perceives, and learns from lived experience. It is oriented towards being rather than doing.

The left side carries your relationship with the feminine, your own and that of the women in your life: your mother, a daughter, a friend, a partner. How easily you express this side depends a great deal on the parental model you grew up with.

The main difficulties here are about feelings. When the left side hurts, a few questions may be worth asking:

- Am I at ease when I comfort someone?
- Can I say "I love you" or "I am hurting"?
- Am I uncomfortable being the one who receives, especially love?
- **For a man**, is it hard to express emotions, release them, or welcome them from others?
- **For a woman**, is there part of my femininity that I deny or push down?

The reverse can also be true. If the feminine side is overdeveloped, the question is one of confidence: are my emotions taking over from my logical, rational side?

Listening to your intuition is the step offered for this side.

## A note for left-handed people

For generations, left-handed children were treated as if something needed correcting. In French, *gauche* means both "left" and "clumsy". Children were often made to write with the right hand. Being forced to switch is associated, in this approach, with clumsiness, nervous tics, difficulties with speech or reading, and feelings of [guilt](/emotions/guilt) or inferiority. If that was your story, the invitation is to make peace with it: to give the child you were understanding and acceptance for what they went through.

Symbolically, because the left side is the feeling, intuitive, creative side, a left-handed person, man or woman, is seen as having a strongly developed creative streak and a natural ease with music, singing and every form of art. Left-handers may also be more inward and reserved, where right-handers more readily reach out. These are tendencies, not a verdict. The closing step is simple: welcome your creative potential and your sensitivity, and accept yourself as you are, knowing that your particular strengths are part of what makes you you.

Handedness does not flip the map. The right side of the body still stands for the masculine principle and the left for the feminine, whichever hand you write with.

## Body part by body part

Start with what the body part stands for on its own page. Then ask whether the side adds an action-and-direction question (right) or a feeling-and-receiving question (left). These are prompts, not fixed meanings.

### Head and headaches

[Headaches](/head/headaches) and [migraines](/head/migraines) often sit on one side. A right-sided head pain may invite you to look at pressure around thinking, planning and performing. A left-sided one may point instead to feelings you have not let yourself express, or to too little room for intuition.

### Eyes

The eyes are about how you see your life. [Eye twitching](/eyes-and-ears/eye-twitching) or strain on the right may ask how you see your direction, your work or a man close to you. On the left, the question may be what you would rather not see emotionally, or in a relationship with a woman who matters to you.

### Ears

The ears are about listening. With [earache](/eyes-and-ears/earache) or [tinnitus](/eyes-and-ears/tinnitus) in the right ear, you might ask what you are refusing to hear about your actions or decisions. In the left ear, the question may be whether you are listening to your own feelings and inner voice.

### Jaw

The jaw holds what you clench and what you do not say. [Jaw pain](/mouth-and-teeth/jaw-pain) on the right may relate to holding back assertion or words in a practical or working situation. On the left, it may relate to swallowing an emotion rather than voicing it.

### Shoulders

Shoulders carry loads. [Shoulder pain](/shoulders/shoulder-pain) on the right may point to responsibilities linked to doing, providing and deciding. On the left, the weight may be emotional: caring for others, or carrying what you feel without sharing it.

### Arms and hands

Arms and hands are how you act on the world and take hold of things. [Wrist pain](/arms-and-hands/wrist-pain) or [finger pain](/arms-and-hands/finger-pain) on the right may ask how you are acting and making things happen. On the left, it may ask how you give and receive, especially tenderness.

### Chest and breasts

The chest is close to the heart and to the people you hold close. With [chest pain](/heart-and-circulation/chest-pain) or [breast pain](/breasts/breast-pain), the right side may raise questions of protecting, providing or competing, and the left of receiving love and expressing tenderness. Chest pain always needs medical attention first.

### Ribs

The ribs protect what is vital. [Rib pain](/joints-and-bones/rib-pain) on the right may relate to how you defend yourself in action and in the outer world. On the left, it may relate to how you protect your feelings, or how hard it is to let others in.

### Kidneys

The kidneys come in a pair, which makes the side especially easy to notice. With [kidney problems](/kidneys/kidney-problems), the right kidney may add a question about fear tied to work, money or direction. The left may add a question about fear in the emotional life and in close bonds.

### Hips

The hips are about moving forward and making decisions. [Hip pain](/hips/hip-pain) on the right may ask whether you are moving forward in the direction you have chosen, or in one chosen for you. On the left, it may ask whether you trust your intuition about where to go.

### Knees

The knees are about flexibility and bending. [Knee pain](/joints-and-bones/knee-pain) on the right may point to rigidity in the outer world, in authority, work or rivalry. On the left, it may point to difficulty yielding in matters of the heart, or towards the women in your life.

### Legs and feet

The legs and feet carry you forward and keep you grounded. With [foot pain](/legs-and-feet/foot-pain), [ankle pain](/legs-and-feet/ankle-pain) or [heel pain](/legs-and-feet/heel-pain), the right side may ask about the practical steps you are taking. The left side may ask whether you feel emotionally supported as you go.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Notice the side without deciding what it means.** Let it be a question rather than an answer.
- **Ask which principle you have been leaning on.** Too much doing and deciding, or too much feeling with little action? Too little of either?
- **Look at the relationships on that side.** The men in your life for the right, the women for the left, and the model each parent gave you.
- **Give the quieter side some room.** If you live mostly on the right, try a moment of listening or receiving. If you live mostly on the left, try one clear decision.
- **Remember that both are yours.** Balance between the masculine and feminine principles is the aim, not winning for one side.

## A medical note

Some one-sided symptoms are emergencies. Call emergency services straight away for sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, a drooping face, slurred speech or confusion, as these can be signs of a stroke. Do the same for chest pain, especially if it spreads to one arm, the jaw, the neck or the back, or comes with breathlessness, sweating or sickness, as it can be a heart attack. Any one-sided pain that is new, severe, worsening or lasting deserves a doctor's assessment. The symbolism above can sit beside that care, never before it.
