When your ears suddenly feel hot and red, folklore has a ready answer: someone is talking about you. In the most common version, a burning left ear means you are being spoken of kindly, and a burning right ear means you are being criticised, though many families say the reverse. Spiritually, a burning ear is linked to what you hear and how it touches you: embarrassment, an anger you have not voiced, or a worry about what other people think. Physically, hot ears usually come from blushing, heat, cold weather or the sun.

This guide covers the spiritual meaning, the folklore, the left and right ears, women and men, whether it is a good or bad sign, and the medical causes.

## What do burning ears mean spiritually?

Two meanings meet in a burning ear: the meaning of the ear, and the meaning of the heat and redness.

The [ears](/eyes-and-ears) are about listening. They let you hear what is around you, harmonious or not, and they warn you of danger. They also carry a selective filter: you can pick out one voice in a crowd, and you can tune out what you do not want to hear. Spiritually, the ear is also the symbol of inner listening: how open you are to your own deepest feelings.

Redness, on the skin, is linked to emotion rising to the surface. We say someone is "red with anger" or "red with shame", and the skin often changes colour when you feel embarrassed. A hot, red ear joins the two: something you heard, or think is being said, has touched you.

### Feeling talked about

A burning ear often comes with the sense that you are being judged, discussed or laughed at. Spiritually, redness is linked to a feeling that your integrity has been touched, and to the wish to go unnoticed for a while. The question is less "who is talking about me?" than "why does what they might say matter so much to me right now?"

### Caring a lot about others' opinions

The skin, in this approach, reacts strongly when you give great weight to what others think and say about you. If you want very much to be liked, to belong and to measure up, every remark lands hard. A burning ear can invite you to notice how much of your energy goes to imagining other people's judgements.

### Anger or shame you did not say

Heat in the face and ears is also linked to [anger](/emotions/anger) that rose and was held in, or to [shame](/emotions/shame) that flared up. If your ears burned during a conversation, it may be worth asking what you wanted to say back, and did not.

### Something you heard that you cannot take in

Because the ear filters what you can accept, a hot ear may also follow words that were hard to hear: criticism, bad news, a remark that stung. The ear "burns" with what has not yet been digested.

## In folklore

This section is popular belief. It is not medicine, and it is not the spiritual interpretation above.

The belief that your ears burn when you are being talked about is old and widespread in Europe. It usually goes by side:

- **Left ear burning:** someone is speaking well of you, praising you, or speaking of you with love.
- **Right ear burning:** someone is speaking ill of you, out of spite or envy.

A short English rhyme sums it up as left for love and right for spite. In other places the sides are reversed. One traditional remedy is to wet a fingertip and touch the burning ear, which is supposed to make the gossip bite their tongue. Burning cheeks are read in the same way.

These are sayings. A hot ear does not tell you what anyone is saying about you.

## Left ear or right ear burning?

Spiritually, the right side of the body is linked to the masculine principle (action, logic, decisions, work and the men in your life) and the left side to the feminine principle (feeling, intuition, receiving and the women in your life), in men and women alike. See [the left and right sides of the body](/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

### Left ear burning: the heart's side

A hot left ear may point to something heard in your emotional life: a remark from a partner, a mother, a friend, or a feeling about how you are loved. It can also ask whether you are listening to your own feelings or brushing them aside.

### Right ear burning: action and reputation

A hot right ear may point to the outer world: your work, your reputation, a decision people are discussing. It can touch the relationship with a father, a partner, a colleague or a boss.

## For women and for men

The map is the same for everyone, whatever their sex.

- **For a woman,** a burning right ear may touch tension around her working life, or expectations she wants to step out of; a burning left ear, how she is seen as a woman, mother, partner or friend.
- **For a man,** a burning right ear may touch rivalry, status or pride; a burning left ear, feelings he has not shown, or care he finds hard to receive.

## Is it a good or bad sign?

In folklore, the left ear is usually the good one and the right ear the bad one, but the sides swap from one region to another. Spiritually, a burning ear is neither good nor bad: it is a sign that something has touched you. Noticing what it was is the useful part.

## Why do my ears get hot and red? The medical side

Hot, red ears are common and usually harmless. Frequent causes include:

- **Blushing.** The NHS says blushing is often caused by feeling embarrassed, hot or anxious. The ears can flush along with the face.
- **Heat and exercise,** hot drinks, alcohol or spicy food in some people.
- **Cold weather.** Ears go red in the cold and can burn as they warm up. **Chilblains** are small, itchy patches that can appear a few hours after being in the cold; the NHS says the skin can itch or feel as if it is burning.
- **Sunburn** on the tops of the ears, which are easy to forget with sun cream. See [burns](/skin/burns).
- **Rosacea,** which the NHS lists as a cause of a red face most of the time.
- **Hormones and the thyroid.** The NHS lists the hot flushes of the [menopause](/reproductive-system/menopause) and an [overactive thyroid](/thyroid/hyperthyroidism) among the causes of flushing, along with heavy [sweating](/whole-body/sweating-and-body-odour) and some medicines.
- **An allergic reaction** or skin irritation from earrings, hair dye or headphones. See [allergies](/whole-body/allergies) and [rash](/skin/rash).
- **Erythromelalgia,** a rare condition that the NHS says causes burning pain, redness and hot skin, mainly in the feet but sometimes in the hands, ears and face.

An ear that is hot, swollen and painful, or comes with discharge or a [fever](/whole-body/fever), may be an [ear infection](/eyes-and-ears/ear-infection). See also [earache](/eyes-and-ears/earache).

### When to see a doctor

- **See a GP** if blushing or flushing affects your everyday life, or you think a medical condition or a medicine may be causing it.
- **See a GP** for an ear that is red, hot and painful, swollen or leaking, or a burning feeling that keeps coming back.
- **Get urgent help** if a red ear comes with a high temperature and you feel very unwell, or the redness spreads quickly.
- **Call 999** for a red, swollen face with swelling of the lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing.

## A gentler way to use this

- **Check the obvious first.** Heat, cold, sun, a hot drink, a glass of wine, a new pair of earrings.
- **Notice the moment.** When did the ear start to burn, and what had you just heard, said or imagined?
- **Turn the question round.** Instead of "who is talking about me?", ask "what am I telling myself about me?"
- **Say the unsaid.** If anger or hurt flared, find one sentence that says it, even only on paper.
- **Lower the volume of others' opinions.** List three qualities you know are yours, whatever anyone says. Accepting kindness from others, when it comes, is part of the same step.

If your ear is ringing rather than burning, see [left or right ear ringing](/guides/ear-ringing-spiritual-meaning). If being seen and judged feels heavy, the page on [timidity](/emotions/timidity) may help.

This guide is for reflection and general information. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. See a GP for a hot, painful or swollen ear, and get emergency help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty.
