**In short**

Spiritually, earache is often linked to hurt, irritation or anguish about what you hear, from criticism and quarrels to the words you wait for and never receive, and to an invitation to listen more closely to yourself.

## What earache is

Earache is pain in one or both ears. It can be sharp, dull or burning, constant or coming and going, and it is especially common in children. The most frequent cause is an [**ear infection**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/eyes-and-ears/ear-infection), in the middle ear behind the eardrum or in the outer ear canal. Other causes include a cold or sinus congestion blocking the tube that drains the ear, a build-up of earwax, pressure changes when flying, and pain that comes from somewhere else, such as a tooth, the jaw joint or the throat.

Most earache gets better by itself within a few days. Painkillers and a warm or cold compress can ease it, and a pharmacist can advise. A GP is needed when the pain lasts, comes with fever or discharge, or affects a young child. Some infections need antibiotics, and some ear problems need a specialist.

## The emotional meaning of earache

The ear is how words reach you. Spiritually, earache appears when what you hear hurts, irritates or wounds you, and when the communication around you has broken down.

### Words that hurt

The pain may follow a criticism that reached your ears, whether it was meant for you or for someone else. What you hear makes you anxious and hurts you, physically as well as emotionally. You may want to shut yourself away and lose contact with what is around you. When what you heard stirs up a lot of irritation, upset or conflict, the ear can become inflamed.

### Not heard, and not told

Earache can also sit with the feeling that nobody listens to you. Or with the disappointment of the words you wish you would hear and never do: a thank you, a compliment, some recognition. Sometimes it is the opposite: you are the one who is stubborn and refuses to hear what others are saying, because what you hear is beyond what you can take in.

### Missing what mattered

When noise or chatter stops you from catching words that were important, to make a decision or to know which way to go, the [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) or frustration that follows is linked to the ears. There is a failure in communication, and the ear carries it.

### Caught between loved ones

The ears react strongly when people you love cannot agree. This is why earaches are so frequent in children, who hear everything the adults say, including their parents' arguments, without being able to give their own view. Hearing different versions of the same story is unsettling when you do not know whom to believe. A child's earache may mirror a parent who is living the same thing and would benefit from listening to themselves more. In French, *oreille*, the ear, can be heard as *or-elle*, "she", and an earache is often linked to a conflict with the mother.

### Stuck in the past

Earache can also sit with a dark past you cling to, with blaming yourself and [**guilt**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt). The question is whether you hurt yourself, or let others treat you badly. If someone is mistreating you, that calls for safety and real help, not only for reflection.

### The telephone and the endless conversation

In adults, earache can come with difficulty in spoken communication, for example a dislike of using the phone. It can be hard to end conversations that feel boring, or that circle endlessly around the same subjects.

### Blocked ears and earwax

The ears can block when you want to hide inside and hear nothing more, because what you hear hurts or disturbs you too much. A plug of earwax is read as not wanting to hear any more arguments or wounding words, and as keeping and chewing over everything instead of letting it go. Confusing messages can bring the same wish: in French, *je n'en crois pas mes oreilles*, I cannot believe my ears.

## Left side or right side?

The side can add a nuance, as with other [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body).

- **Left ear pain** relates to the feminine side, in men and women alike: feelings, tenderness and receiving. The question may be what you have heard in your emotional life, or from the women in your life, that you find hard to take in.
- **Right ear pain** relates to the masculine side: reasoning, speech, decisions and work. The question may be what you have heard at work, about the direction you are taking, or from the men in your life.

## In folklore

Popular belief, not medicine and not the spiritual interpretation above, says that burning or ringing ears mean someone is talking about you. Old sayings disagree on which ear means praise and which means criticism. These are sayings: a ringing that lasts is [**tinnitus**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/eyes-and-ears/tinnitus), and a burning, painful ear deserves a look.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Lend an ear.** In French, *prêter l'oreille* means to listen closely. Practise it with the people around you, and especially with yourself.
- **Keep your ears open, and your distance.** You can hear what is said without letting every word lodge in you.
- **Say what you need to hear.** If you are waiting for thanks or recognition, ask for it, or give it to yourself.
- **Step out of the middle.** When people you love disagree, you do not have to carry their quarrel.
- **Listen inside.** A few minutes of silence each day makes room for your own inner wisdom.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What have I heard recently that hurt me, whether it was aimed at me or at someone else?
- Do I feel that nobody listens to what I have to say?
- Which words am I still waiting to hear, a thank you, a compliment, an "I love you"?
- Am I refusing to hear what someone is trying to tell me?
- Am I caught between people I love who cannot agree, or between versions of a story I do not know whether to believe?
- When did I last listen to my own inner wisdom?

***Affirmation ***

> “I lend an ear to what is around me and within me. I can hear without holding on, and keep my heart open.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Earache with a high temperature, or that has not improved after two to three days.
- Fluid, pus or blood coming out of the ear, or a change in hearing.
- Swelling or redness behind the ear, the ear sticking out, a stiff neck, severe headache, dizziness or a face that droops on one side. Seek urgent care.
- Earache in a baby, or frequent earaches in a child.
- Ear pain after an injury, a loud noise, or something put in the ear.
- Do not push cotton buds or objects into a painful ear. If drops or antibiotics are prescribed, finish the course.

**Tinnitus**

Tinnitus is often read as a sign of inner noise. It may reflect intense stress, resistance to an unwanted change, or a difficulty listening to your inner voice and to what you would rather not hear.

Spiritually, jaw pain is often linked to anger and words held back behind clenched teeth. It may reflect a gap between what you think and what you dare to say, and the feeling of being muzzled.
