The emotional and spiritual meaning of an ear infection: hearing what was said, and what was never said, through a drum of fluid.

Hearing Also known as: Otitis, Otitis media, Middle ear infection

**In short**

An ear infection is inflammation of the ear, often with fluid behind the drum. It is read as something heard, or something that was never heard, that you would rather not take in.

## What an ear infection is

An ear infection is inflammation of the ear. In the middle ear, the usual form, fluid gathers behind the eardrum and sound has to cross that water before it is heard. Children have it often, because the tube that drains the ear is short and blocks easily after a cold. Pain, fever, and muffled hearing are the usual signs. Many infections settle with time and pain relief. A clinician decides if an antibiotic is needed. A drum that keeps filling, or hearing that stays down, needs a proper look.

## The emotional meaning of an ear infection

The ear is how the world comes in as sound. An infection here is read as discomfort with something heard, or with something that was never said. In a child it often sits with what the parents say to each other, or with words aimed at the child, when there is still no way to answer. The same reading belongs to an adult. The hurt can be a sentence that landed. It can also be the sentence that never came: I love you, well done, I heard you.

Fluid behind the drum is the image the spiritual interpretation stays with. What you hear has to pass through water, as sound once passed through the water around a baby before birth. The wish, often unspoken, is to return to a place that felt held. Closing the ear, in the old phrase, is a way of stepping back from a room that has become too loud. [**Sadness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/sadness), weariness, and the sense of not being understood travel with that retreat.

### What was said, and what was missing

A child with an ear infection is often very awake to the mood of the house, and to whatever feels unsafe. Harmony is wanted. Argument is fled. News of a separation, or of a change that will follow it, can be the thing the ear refuses. The parents' task, in this reading, is not to decide what the child feels. It is to make room for the child to say it. An adult asks a different question: am I listening to my own inner voice, or only to messages that leave me [**angry**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) about what I am supposed to do?

There is a lonelier version. I am the one who always leans in to hear other people, and when it is my turn, no one is there. The infected ear then becomes a small closed world. Imagination is safer than the room in front of you. The present moment, and the harm you may have done as well as the harm done to you, stays on the far side of the drum.

## A gentler way to hold it

- Name one thing you heard that you have not answered, and one thing you needed to hear.
- If a child is in pain, give them a way to say what the house feels like. Take them to a clinician as well.
- Listening inward and listening outward can happen in the same day. Neither one has to cancel the other.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What have I heard lately that I wish I had not?
- What words have I been waiting for, and not received?
- Where do I stop listening, to others or to myself?

***Affirmation ***

> “I can hear what is said, and I can hear what I need.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Ear pain, fever, discharge, or hearing that drops needs a clinician, especially in a baby or a young child.
- Swelling behind the ear, a stiff neck, dizziness with vomiting, or a face that droops on one side needs urgent care.
- Do not put oil, cotton buds, or leftover drops into an ear that is already sore.
