## What hate is

Hate is a settled hostility. It goes further than anger, because it is maintained. You detest someone, you become harsh, you send wounding words with rage in the heart. It injures relationships. It also, the source says, injures the person who keeps it going, more than the person or the situation it is aimed at.

The reading below does not ask you to approve what was done to you. It looks at what maintaining the hate does to you.

## The emotional meaning of hate

When you live in hate and rage, something feels as if it is burning. The source places that burn in several systems: the digestive system, the lungs, and also the gallbladder and the liver. This site does not yet have a page for the liver or the gallbladder. The links here are the digestion and the breath, which the entry does name.

Hate arises, in this reading, when you feel that others are preventing you from living your life. You want to do things your own way. When they do not go that way, you react hard. Instead of staying open and trying to understand another point of view, you insist on your position. You refuse any responsibility for your life.

The source is severe about the cost. The hate destroys the one who entertains it. That is an inner picture. It is not a claim that hate is the medical cause of a disease, and it is not a reason to skip a doctor if the body is actually ill.

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to call a real injury unreal. The emotional perspective invites you to stop feeding a fire that is burning you.

- **See who is paying.** The source says the person who maintains the hate pays first.
- **Ask what way of living feels blocked.** The rage often starts when life will not go your way.
- **Hear one other view.** Staying on your position is how responsibility gets refused.
- **Turn toward forgiveness as a direction.** For yourself and for the other, so the judgement can loosen.
