The emotional and spiritual meaning of a stomach or duodenal ulcer: a raw place where pleasing others has eaten into you.

Stomach Also known as: Peptic ulcer, Gastric ulcer, Duodenal ulcer

**In short**

A peptic ulcer is a raw sore in the stomach or the duodenum. It is read as a life of swallowing what you do not want, until the irritation has nowhere left to go.

## What a stomach ulcer is

A peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Acid and a common stomach infection are the usual medical partners, along with certain painkillers. A burning pain, often related to meals, is typical. Treatment clears the infection when it is there, and protects the lining while it heals. Low mood and self-criticism can live beside an ulcer. They do not drill the hole.

## The emotional meaning of a stomach ulcer

The spiritual interpretation places a stomach ulcer next to a thin sense of your own worth. The wish to please is so strong that anything will be swallowed. Emotions and your own desires are pushed down. You stop respecting yourself, and then you blame other people for not respecting you either. Inside, it feels as if something is gnawing. Each event gets dramatised. Contrarieties, [**worries**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/worry), and uncertainties pile up, and the sense of powerlessness grows with them. The image is a surplus of irritants that becomes a sore.

The irritant may be a person or a situation you would rather not see and cannot avoid. It sits on the stomach. You want it out of your territory. Feeling misunderstood comes partly from the difficulty of saying what you need. Pleasing people is easier than speaking, so you gnaw on the bit, in the old phrase, and stay quiet. Frustration grows into an aggressiveness that wants to be recognised, or it tips towards wanting revenge. Harsh criticism turns inward. One corner of life, love or work, is worried over until it feels as if it is eating you from the inside. The knots in the stomach are that torment, and they leave you more exposed.

### The duodenum and authority

An ulcer in the duodenum is read more narrowly as the [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear) of not being up to the people who stand as authority. The duodenum is only the doorway of the small intestine. The question is whether you can meet that doorway as yourself, instead of as someone who must swallow the verdict.

The step the spiritual interpretation offers is to notice the qualities that are already in you, to value them accurately, and to admit the need for love. Saying a need is part of that. So is channelling the anger once you have seen it, rather than letting it run the whole house.

## A gentler way to hold it

- Name one thing you have agreed to that you did not want. Say so, in a sentence.
- Catch the self-attack when it starts, and replace it with one true quality you already have.
- Authority can be met without disappearing. The lining still needs its medicine.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What am I swallowing so that someone else will stay pleased?
- Where does a worry feel as if it is eating me from the inside?
- With which authority am I afraid of not being enough?

***Affirmation ***

> “I can say what I need, and I can stop gnawing at myself.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- An ulcer can bleed or burst.
- Vomiting blood, black stools, sudden severe pain, or fainting needs emergency care.
- Finish the antibiotics if an infection was found, and do not stop an acid medicine early because the pain eased.
- A clinician confirms an ulcer.
- Indigestion on its own is not one.

## **Related conditions**

**Gastritis**

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. It is read as irritation and anger towards something, or someone, you cannot digest.

**Heartburn**

Heartburn is often read as a sign that something is burning us up inside. A situation we find unfair, a feeling of being controlled and anger we swallow instead of expressing may raise the acidity.
