**In short**

Spiritually, nausea and vomiting are often linked to disgust or aversion towards a reality you cannot stomach, and to the wish to throw out a situation, a person or a part of yourself that feels unfair or unbearable.

## What nausea and vomiting are

Nausea is the uneasy feeling of needing to be sick. Vomiting is the forceful emptying of the stomach through the mouth. They are symptoms, not illnesses in themselves. The most common causes are [**gastroenteritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/gastroenteritis) (a stomach bug), food poisoning, motion sickness, early pregnancy, [**migraines**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/migraines), some medicines, too much alcohol, and inner-ear problems such as [**vertigo**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/head/vertigo). Strong emotions and [**anxiety**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anxiety) can also bring on nausea.

Most nausea and vomiting pass within a day or two. The main risk is dehydration, so small, frequent sips of water or rehydration drinks matter. A pharmacist can advise, and a doctor may prescribe anti-sickness medicine. Vomiting can also be a sign of something serious, such as appendicitis, a blockage of the bowel or a head injury, which is why the warning signs below need urgent care.

## The emotional meaning of nausea and vomiting

Spiritually, nausea is the body saying "I cannot take this in". The stomach, which receives our reality, turns.

### A reality you cannot stomach

Nausea sits with sorrow and pain about a reality that is upsetting your life and that you would like to avoid. It can signal disgust or aversion towards a thing, a person, an idea, a situation or even an emotion, because you do not feel safe. There may be revolt, [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger), [**fear**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/fear), frustration or simple incomprehension, and it "sits on your stomach".

### What wants to be said

The question is what you have absorbed, from your life or from yourself, that creates an urge to express it at once. If it is not said in words, it may show as nausea. In French, nausea is also called *mal au cœur*, literally "heartache", and retching is a *haut-le-cœur*, a heave of the heart. The language itself hears the heart in the stomach. A retching feeling may come when you see how powerless you feel to act or to take your life in hand.

### Vomiting: throwing it out

When it becomes too much, when [**resentment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/resentment) grows too large, vomiting is read as the physical rejection of a situation that feels unfair. What you reject may be outside you. It may also be a part of yourself you would like to see disappear. Vomiting refuses something or someone, and in doing so it can keep you from moving forward. The question is: whom or what am I resisting so strongly? Sometimes it is a parent you would like to put out of your life, because what you shared seems to have gone.

Other questions belong here too. Am I afraid I will not be equal to what is coming? Why do I refuse what is new? Do I feel pushed by others to say or do things? Perhaps you no longer want a life that feels superficial.

### Bringing up bile

If you bring up bile, the spiritual interpretation is that a situation has become unbearable, and you are tired of always having to "water down your wine", the French expression for compromising and toning yourself down.

## Nausea in early pregnancy

Morning sickness is very common and is caused mainly by pregnancy hormones. Spiritually, it is read as the body meeting a great change: a new life will rearrange yours. Gentle questions may come up. Do I feel strong enough to care for this child? Is part of me, my insecurity or my sense of powerlessness, something I want to deny? These are ordinary questions for any parent-to-be, not signs of rejecting the baby. The invitation is to welcome the changes, to ask for peace, and to digest the emotions and tensions the pregnancy brings into daily life, so that you can pass on to your child the confidence of someone who is steering their own life.

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to look for a hidden meaning while you are being sick. Rest, fluids and care come first. Afterwards, the emotional perspective asks what you could not take in.

- **Name what you could not stomach.** Saying it, even only to yourself, gives it somewhere to go other than the body.
- **Accept every facet of yourself.** The parts you would like to throw out are also yours. Making room for them helps you build a life that looks like you, and leave the past behind.
- **Look at your resistance.** Ask what you are refusing, and whether it is truly harmful or simply new.
- **Remember you can choose.** You are always free to choose, and when you do what you love there is less to resist.
- **Trust what is coming.** Let yourself have some faith in life and the future, and leave room for the good things it wants to bring.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Which situation, person or idea do I feel disgust or aversion towards?
- What has stayed "on my stomach" because I could not put it into words?
- What am I resisting so strongly, and what am I trying to push out of my life?
- Is there a part of myself I wish would simply disappear?
- Am I afraid I will not be up to what is coming next?
- Do I feel forced by others to say or do things that are not mine?

***Affirmation ***

> “I can digest what this moment brings. I accept every part of who I am, and I let good things come to me.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds, or green vomit. Seek urgent medical care.
- Vomiting with a severe headache and stiff neck, chest pain, sudden severe tummy pain, or after a head injury. Call emergency services.
- Signs of dehydration, such as dizziness, very dark urine, passing little or no urine, or being unable to keep any fluids down. Seek urgent medical care, especially for babies, young children and older people.
- Vomiting that lasts more than two days in an adult, or more than a day in a baby or young child.
- Severe or constant sickness in pregnancy that stops you keeping food or drink down. This can be hyperemesis gravidarum and needs treatment.
- Nausea that keeps coming back, or comes with weight loss. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because it makes you sick; ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

**Gastritis**

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. It is read as irritation and anger towards something, or someone, you cannot digest.

**Gastroenteritis**

Spiritually, gastroenteritis is often linked to an irritation so strong that you cannot absorb anything at all, a wish to reject a situation or a person, and disappointment you let rumble inside instead of voicing it.

**Migraines**

Migraines are often read as the sign of a head under too much pressure. They may reflect over-responsibility, a need to perform and control, and anger turned against yourself, until the body forces a pause.
