**In short**

Spiritually, a hernia is often linked to pressure that has been held in for too long, a strong unspoken wish to break away from a situation you feel bound to, and a life lived for other people's expectations rather than your own needs.

## What a hernia is

A hernia happens when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. It often shows as a soft lump or swelling that may disappear when you lie down and reappear when you stand, cough or strain. Some hernias ache or feel heavy; others cause no symptoms.

The most common types are:

- **Inguinal hernia**, in the groin, much more common in men.
- **Femoral hernia**, also in the groin, more common in women.
- **Umbilical hernia**, at the belly button. It is common and usually harmless in babies, and often closes by itself in the first years of life. It can also appear in adults.
- **Incisional hernia**, through the scar of a previous operation.
- **Hiatus hernia**, where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest. It often causes no symptoms but can lead to [**heartburn**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/heartburn).

Hernias are linked to weaker muscle walls, ageing, heavy lifting, chronic coughing, [**constipation**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/constipation), pregnancy and being overweight. They do not heal by themselves in adults. Treatment ranges from watchful waiting to surgery, which is often a routine operation. A hernia that gets trapped is an emergency.

A [**slipped disc**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/slipped-disc), sometimes called a herniated disc or spinal hernia, is a different problem in the spine and has its own page.

## The emotional meaning of a hernia

Spiritually, a hernia is pressure looking for a way out. Something pushes through the wall where the wall is weakest. The abdominal wall protects the organs and keeps them in place. In the same way, you may be trying to keep your world in its place by not allowing your [**anger**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anger) or your stronger feelings out.

### A wish to break away

A hernia can sit with a great, unspoken wish to break with a situation or a person you find unpleasant, and to which you feel committed. You want to pull yourself out of something that has become intolerable. It may concern a separation, chosen by you or by your partner, that you find hard to accept.

### Living for everyone else

Do you find life heavy to carry? Why work so hard? Underneath there may be weakness and fatigue, a need to be supported, and a reluctance to ask for help. There is often frustration with yourself, because you know you live too much for others and not enough for your own needs. You answer the expectations of parents, friends, partner and boss. And where are you in all this?

### When pressure implodes

By keeping the strain under control, you can reach a point where everything bursts, or rather bursts inward. Distress that has not been released outwardly has to find a way out. There is a mental push, [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress), trying to break through. You may feel driven to go too far, or to reach your goal in an excessive way.

### A question of self-blame

The spiritual interpretation also hears a form of self-punishment in a hernia. Treat this as a question rather than a verdict: am I angry with myself for feeling powerless, or for not achieving certain things? Do I feel [**guilty**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/guilt) for being in this state? If the answer is yes, a hernia can be read as the moment for a new start.

## What the location may suggest

In this approach, where the hernia appears adds nuance. Take these as questions to explore.

- **Inguinal hernia (groin):** a secret you carry and do not share, and difficulty expressing your creativity. It can also ask: am I satisfied in my intimate life? Do I try to meet my partner's needs while forgetting my own?
- **Hiatus hernia (diaphragm):** anger, even rage, in a situation where you feel powerless. You feel ready to "fly off the handle". If it brings on heartburn, see also [**heartburn**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/heartburn).
- **Umbilical hernia (belly button):** in a baby it is a common physical finding linked to how the navel heals after the cord is cut, and it usually closes on its own. As a symbolic image for an adult, the belly button points back to the safe, warm place of the mother's womb. It may express disappointment, even [**regret**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/regret), at having had to leave that safety. Now you feel you must manage on your own, and goals you set yourself suddenly feel much less exciting. In adult life it can also reflect a fear of being controlled or influenced by a new environment.
- **Spinal "hernia":** see [**slipped disc**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/back/slipped-disc).

## A gentler way to hold it

The aim is not to blame yourself for a weak spot. Muscle walls, lifting, ageing and surgery explain most hernias, and many need a surgeon. The emotional perspective simply asks what pressure you have been holding in.

- **Let your creativity out.** Give yourself one place, a hobby, a notebook, a conversation, where you express yourself freely.
- **Be yourself out loud.** Notice where you hide who you are to keep the peace, and try one small honest step.
- **Ask for support.** If life feels heavy, say so to someone, and accept the help that is offered.
- **Put your own needs back on the list.** Next to what parents, partner and work expect, write what you need.
- **Take time alone.** A little solitude helps you see your life clearly and know where you are going.
- **Trust your potential.** For the umbilical image especially: you have what it takes to reach your goals, and you are supported. Opening your heart to others, without losing yourself, makes the road less lonely.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Which situation or person do I long to break away from, without saying so?
- Am I working this hard for my own sake, or to meet everyone else's expectations?
- Where do I need support but hold back from asking for it?
- What anger or distress am I keeping in so that everything stays in its place?
- Am I pushing myself to go too far, or reaching my goals in an excessive way?
- What part of my creativity or my true self have I kept hidden?

***Affirmation ***

> “I allow myself to be who I am and to express it freely. I take time to see clearly where I am going.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- { "A hernia that becomes suddenly painful, tender, red or hard, or cannot be pushed back in, especially with vomiting, a swollen belly or being unable to pass wind or stools": { " Call emergency services": "the bowel may be trapped (strangulated) and needs surgery the same day." } }
- A new lump in the groin, near the belly button, or in a scar on the abdomen. See a GP to confirm what it is.
- A lump in the groin or scrotum in a baby or child. See a GP; inguinal hernias in children are usually repaired.
- A lump at the belly button of a baby that is still there after the age of about four or five, or that becomes painful or discoloured.
- Heartburn that is frequent, or difficulty swallowing, which may come with a hiatus hernia.
- Chest pain should never be assumed to be a hiatus hernia. If it is severe, spreads to the arm or jaw, or comes with breathlessness, call emergency services.
- Whether and when to operate is a surgeon's decision. Do not delay a recommended repair because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Slipped disc**

A slipped disc is the soft centre of a spinal cushion pushing out and pressing on a nerve. It is read as pressure, from duty or from pace, that the back has been carrying for other people.

**Constipation**

Constipation is often read as a sign of holding on. A need to control events, insecurity, fear of the unknown and difficulty letting go of the past or of old emotions may keep things from moving.

**Heartburn**

Heartburn is often read as a sign that something is burning us up inside. A situation we find unfair, a feeling of being controlled and anger we swallow instead of expressing may raise the acidity.
