# **Haemorrhoids: emotional and spiritual meaning**

Bowel Also known as: Hemorrhoids, Piles

Updated 4 October 2026

**In short**

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins at the anus, often with constipation, pregnancy, pain or bleeding. They are read as a conflict between pushing something out and holding it in, and as a pressure you carry alone.

## What haemorrhoids are

Haemorrhoids, or piles, are swollen veins in the anus and the lower rectum, a kind of varicose vein in that place. They are common with [**constipation**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/digestive-system/constipation) and straining, in pregnancy, and with long hours of sitting. They can itch, ache, bleed bright red on the paper, or leave a soft lump. Most settle with softer stools, fibre, fluid, and a short course of a soothing cream. A clinician looks when the bleeding is new or heavy, because blood from the back passage can come from other illnesses. Painful clots, and piles that stay out, sometimes need a small procedure.

## The emotional meaning of haemorrhoids

Because piles often arrive with constipation and with pregnancy, those situations are part of the reading. Where there is pain, it sits with [**stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress). Where there is bleeding, it sits with a loss of joy. The veins themselves are kin to [**varicose veins**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/varicose-veins), and the pressure in the picture is kin to the pressure read with [**high blood pressure**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/heart-and-circulation/high-blood-pressure).

Often the difficulty is with a mother. An unfinished grief, or the wish that she not leave. You may need her, and her opinion, badly, and a new set of conditions makes you feel abandoned by her.

Piles point to a tension and an inner wish to force an elimination, as if you were trying very hard to push something out, while at the same time the holding back is happening. The conflict between pushing and keeping creates the imbalance. Veins suggest an emotional conflict between rejecting, pushing away, and wanting to retain, to block the feeling inside. A child can live both at once, wanting to pull away from a parent and wanting that parent to stay. There is a conflict between the feeling of loss and your ideas about love.

You question your identity, and your ties to your family, especially your father, and to your work and to society. You have the impression of being just one more person in a queue, an anonymous "nth", when deep down you know you are a remarkable being with a unique place. Do you want to live unnamed for a while? Do you feel like an impostor? Would you like to take someone else's place? Or, the other way, are you clinging too hard to your blood family, and particularly to your mother?

You may not know what to do with criticism aimed at you, above all from a partner. Other feelings sit here too. An intense guilt. An old tension, badly expressed or never expressed, that you would rather keep to yourself, toward a person or a situation that, in the French idiom, *me fend le derrière*, tears me apart, infuriates me. The body gives an alarm. Something in the life needs light on it, because you are deeply disturbed. Something wants to erupt, like a volcano.

## The pressure you carry alone

[**Stress**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/stress) is very likely in the picture, an overload you feel guilty about. There may be deadlines you are struggling to meet. Letting go is hard. Trust is hard. You can feel obliged to fill every duty even when what you want is to speak, to say what you need, and to put a situation back in joint. Are you in control, or do you have to submit? You have to force yourself through something you dislike, and you cannot get free of it. There is a constraint, and a [**resentment**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/resentment), that would rather be released. You live by halves, and you would like to flee the house.

The social pressure is immense. You carry the load alone, because pride tells you not to ask anyone for help. There can also be a feeling of submission toward a person or a situation in which you feel diminished, as if you were nothing. You cannot take your place by showing your sensitivity and your creativity, so you give that place to someone else. You live a great deal in compliance. The French word is *complaisance*, the habit of always agreeing to what others ask, so as to please. You want an identity and you want to be different, and you also want to be loved.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **See the situation as temporary**, and let it show you where help would actually free you.
- **Let love support the thought and the action.** Harmony inside is what this reading pictures.
- **Let go, and take the risk of saying what disturbs you.**
- **Take your life back in hand**, and set down the feelings that have been feeding on you. Build a base where you feel well and free.
- **Keep the medical plan.** Softer stools, a clinician if you bleed, and an examination when the bleeding is new, stay in place.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- What am I trying to force out, and what am I holding back at the same time?
- Is there an unfinished grief about my mother, or a fear of her leaving?
- Where do I feel like one more anonymous person, when I know I have a place of my own?
- Whose criticism, especially a partner's, do I not know how to meet?
- What deadline or duty am I forcing myself through, too proud to ask for help?
- Where am I agreeing to everything so that I will still be loved?

***Affirmation ***

> “I say what is disturbing me, and I let the held feeling move. I take my life back in hand.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Heavy bleeding, dizziness, or black stools. Seek urgent medical care.
- A lump that is very painful, blue, or that you cannot push back.
- Bleeding that is new after the age of 40, or that comes with a change in bowel habit or weight loss.
- Pain that stops you sitting, or bleeding in pregnancy.
- Bleeding you have decided is piles without anyone examining you.
- Do not ignore rectal bleeding because a reading has given it a meaning.

## **Related conditions**

**Constipation**

Constipation is often read as a sign of holding on. A need to control events, insecurity, fear of the unknown and difficulty letting go of the past or of old emotions may keep things from moving.

**High blood pressure**

High blood pressure is often read through the image of a pressure cooker. Emotions and thoughts held back for a long time, a need to control and to perform, and heavy self-imposed demands may keep the pressure rising.

**Varicose veins**

Varicose veins are often read as a sign that joy no longer flows freely. They may reflect a situation or a direction that no longer fits, a feeling of dragging a heavy burden, and a life lived under obligation.
