# **Breast pain and cysts: emotional and spiritual meaning**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of breast pain and cysts: how they may relate to over-protection, a broken bond, and anguish that has nowhere to go.

Breasts Also known as: Mastalgia, Breast cyst, Fibrocystic breasts

**In short**

Breast pain and cysts are common and usually benign, and a new lump still needs a clinician. They are read alongside over-protection, a bond that broke, and anguish carried for years in place of joy.

## What breast pain and cysts are

Pain in the breasts, mastalgia, is common. It is often cyclical, worse before a period, and felt in both breasts. A cyst is a fluid-filled sac. Many are benign and move with the hormones of the month. Fibrocystic change is a lumpy, tender pattern, not a disease in itself. None of this can be told from a feeling of guilt or of care. A new lump, a skin change, or a discharge needs a clinician, who can use examination and, when it is warranted, ultrasound or a mammogram. Most lumps are not cancer. Waiting in order to interpret them is how the ones that matter get missed.

The emotional reading below asks about protection, loss and anguish. [**Mastitis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/breasts/mastitis) is the infection in the same place. The [**breasts**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/breasts) page asks where the balance of care has gone.

## The emotional meaning of breast pain

When the breasts hurt, the question is whether you are taking an over-protective or dominating attitude toward your children, toward whoever represents your children, or toward your partner. "Children", here, can be a project you tend like a baby, a niece or nephew or another child you count as your own, or your own parents, now that they need the attention children need. Are you afraid, or did it really happen, that someone very dear was taken from you? You may have been separated from them physically, or the break may be in a personal relationship where communication and exchange no longer exist. An unmet need to be linked to things and to beings leaves a void. You were disowned by one of your own, and you suffer it badly. Or you are the one who disowned your own people.

You are [**anguished**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anguish). You think too much. You have the impression your freedom is curtailed. You concern yourself little with your emotions, and you find yourself wanting to dominate, to be possessive. You judge others in a bloody way and do not want to hear what they have to say. You want nothing to escape you. You doubt your value, and you tend to catch fire easily in love. You lose yourself in relationships to compensate for a small store of trust and self-esteem. The joy you could feel is diluted in old sorrows and worries that have followed you for years. Your anguish and your insecurity are stronger than your desire to take yourself in hand. You have the impression of living in the wrong. You give all the power to your rational side, to get away from your emotions. The emotions are still there, and the breasts can become hypersensitive, letting that inner pain and grief show through.

A cyst is placed, in this reading, with feeling guilty about a motherhood, or with having undergone an emotional shock. That is a question to sit with after a clinician has said what the lump is. It is not a way to decide. By wanting too much to protect the people you love, you keep them from living. You take the decisions in their place. You become a mother hen.

## A gentler way to hold it

You leave the people you love free to become autonomous, so that they too become responsible people. You let your real personality emerge. You deserve what is best. In letting go of anguish, worries and resentments of the past, you give the feeling life somewhere else to go. Breast tissue follows hormones, cysts and, sometimes, disease. It does not become healthy because a sorrow was named. Naming the sorrow is for you. The tissue is for the doctor.

- **Have a new lump examined.** Interpretation comes after the scan, not before.
- **Ask whom you are over-protecting.** A child, a project, a parent, a partner.
- **Name a bond that broke.** Disowning, and being disowned, are both in the picture.
- **Notice when protection becomes decision-making for someone else.** The mother hen keeps people from living.
- **Look at the joy diluted in an old sorrow.** Anguish stronger than the wish to take yourself in hand is the climate.
- **Keep screening and review.** A reading is not a clearance.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where am I over-protective or dominating toward my children, or toward whoever holds that place, or toward my partner?
- Have I lost someone dear, in body or in a bond where exchange has stopped?
- Who disowned me, or whom have I disowned?
- Where is my freedom curtailed, and where am I the one curtailing someone else's?
- Am I deciding for the people I love, and calling it protection?
- What old sorrow is diluting a joy I could otherwise feel?

***Affirmation ***

> “I leave the people I love free to become responsible for themselves. I let my real personality come forward, and I let an old anguish be set down.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A new lump, a change in the skin, nipple discharge, or pain that is in one spot and does not come and go with the cycle. Have it examined. Most lumps are not cancer. The ones that might be should be found.
- A cyst that is large and painful can be drained. A clinician decides. Do not assume a cyst from how it feels.
- Redness, heat and fever. That may be \[mastitis](/breasts/mastitis) and needs same-day care.
- Pain with a hard, fixed mass, or with swelling of the arm.
- Cyclical pain in both breasts is common. A persistent one-sided pain is the one to report.
- An emotional reading does not clear a lump, and letting go of a sorrow does not make breast tissue "perfectly healthy". Screening and examination do that work.

## **Related conditions**

**Mastitis**

Mastitis is a painful inflammation of the breast, often during breastfeeding, and it needs prompt care. It is read alongside exhaustion, a wish to lay a duty down without guilt, and a hardness toward yourself that has become sacrifice.
