The emotional and spiritual meaning of blood sugar problems: what diabetes and low blood sugar may say about sweetness, sadness, and love you find hard to receive or to give.

## **Conditions**

Explore the emotional reading of each blood sugar condition.

### **High blood sugar**

Diabetes, often linked to a lack of sweetness, repeated sadness, and resistance to a loss you feel forced to live.

**Diabetes**

Diabetes is often read as a sorrow of love. Sugar stands for tenderness, and high blood sugar for sadness, a refusal of sweetness, and reserves kept ready for a fight you do not want.

### **Low blood sugar**

Hypoglycaemia, often linked to giving everything away, deep sadness, and a life that has lost its direction.

**Hypoglycaemia**

Hypoglycaemia is often read as the other side of diabetes: sugar as love, and a drop in it when you have given so much away that nothing is left for you.

## **Linked emotions**

Feelings the source links with this part of the body. They are not tied to one condition.

**Aggressiveness**

Aggressiveness is often read as energy pushed down until it comes out as an attack. You feel threatened, not respected, and you strike first so you will not have to feel weak.

**Sadness**

Sadness is often read as a pain that has not been expressed. The source links unexpressed sadness with the lungs, a deeper sadness with the heart, and a very deep sadness with diabetes.

**Impatience**

Impatience is often read as inner stress and insecurity. It shakes the nervous system, makes you abrupt, and flares when you feel your freedom is being limited.

Blood sugar is the glucose the body uses for energy. Insulin, made in the pancreas, lets that sugar move into the cells. When insulin is lacking or no longer works well, sugar stays high in the blood: that is diabetes. When sugar falls too low, the cells and muscles are starved of fuel: that is hypoglycaemia. Both need medical care. Diabetes is a long illness. Low blood sugar can be an emergency, especially in someone who uses insulin.

In the emotional approach, sugar stands for love, tenderness and affection. Too much and too little are both read as a trouble with sweetness, and with the love you can give yourself and other people.

This page offers a symbolic and emotional perspective. It is meant to complement medical care, never to replace it. Do not change insulin, tablets or meals because of what you read here. If you feel very unwell, confused or faint, seek urgent care.

## What blood sugar represents

The source treats sugar as sweetness. Diabetes, in this reading, is a sorrow of love: an affective fast. Repeated sadness, emotions held back, and a life with little gentleness are said to harden a person. Sweetness disappears in favour of a continuous pain. Food then compensates: pasta, bread, sweets, anything that stands in for the tenderness that is missing. Life tastes bitter, so something sweeter is asked to balance it.

Low blood sugar is the other side of the same theme. Sugar is a reward, affection, softness. The questions are whether you are looking for that love, waiting for it from outside, and eating sugar to fill the lack. Both pictures are tied to joy that has gone thin, and to the love you are able to express for yourself and for others.

## Common emotional themes

### Sadness, and love that is hard to receive

A deep sadness is one of the feelings the source places beside diabetes. You may feel you have to hold on, to fight life, people and events. You limit yourself in many domains. Regret covers both what was and what might have been. You think you do not deserve happiness or pleasure.

Receiving love is difficult. You feel smothered, overloaded, stuck in a situation that is too much and out of your hands. There is a great need for love, especially from the father, and also from a boss or from whoever stands for authority, together with little idea of how to take it when it is offered. Because the small sweetnesses of life are refused, the illness itself then forbids the sweet foods you used to eat. Joy, love and passion may feel impossible to show in the open.

### Resistance, and the fight you are storing sugar for

The source describes a strong resistance to an event you want to avoid and feel forced to undergo: a separation, a move, an exam. The feelings are often the loss of someone dear, or a deep loneliness, sometimes close to despair. Family is usually involved. Disgust and disdain sit with the resistance. You may think of it constantly. In French the source plays on *diabète* and *bête*, the beast, and asks whether that beast is outside you or inside you, and which will be stronger.

High blood sugar is then read as reserves kept ready for a fight. Blood sugar is what feeds the muscles. You feel pushed to do things you want to resist. There can also be a feeling of powerlessness: not enough energy to move forward, unable to get through the tasks. A child with diabetes is read as fearing that one or both parents do not trust them and will be disappointed, and as needing sweetness without knowing how to ask.

### Giving everything away

Hypoglycaemia is read as the opposite imbalance. You give so much to others that nothing is left for you. Life is off balance and you want to drop it all and flee. Strong emotions, a deep sadness, anguish, even hostility toward other people, are named as the background. Expectations are not met. What comes from outside, especially from authority, is refused.

There can be intense disgust toward something or someone you would rather avoid, including your own body in the mirror. Strength goes into resisting what you find unbearable. The smallest gesture of the day feels tedious. Inner pressure feels out of your control. Direction is lost. The source also says a food allergy can be a physical cause, and that this needs a real medical check, not only a meaning.

It adds a hard note, to be read gently. Feeling weak can become a way of getting attention, easier than standing up for what you believe. That is a question, not a judgement on being ill.

## Caring for your blood sugar from the inside

The idea is not to blame yourself. The pancreas, weight, pregnancy, medicines, exercise and family history all play a real role. An emotional reading sits beside treatment. It is not a reason to stop it.

A few gentle practices can support this inner work:

- **Let sweetness be received.** Notice when affection is offered and you cannot take it.
- **Name the sadness.** Repeated sorrow is the feeling this reading keeps beside high blood sugar.
- **Look at the event you are resisting.** A separation, a move, a loss. Resistance is part of the picture.
- **Give to yourself first.** The low-sugar reading says you cannot give others what you refuse yourself.
- **Keep the medical plan.** Meals, monitoring and medicine are how the body is actually looked after.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where has sweetness gone from my life, and what am I using in its place?
- What sadness have I hardened against, instead of letting it be felt?
- Do I find it hard to receive love, especially from a parent or from someone in authority?
- What event am I resisting, while feeling I have no choice but to go through it?
- Am I giving so much to others that nothing is left for me?
- What would change if I let myself have the affection I keep refusing?

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Confusion, collapse, a seizure, or someone with diabetes who cannot be woken. Call emergency services. If they use insulin and you have been shown how, a low-sugar emergency needs immediate sugar or glucagon as you were taught.
- A diagnosis of diabetes, or sugar found in the urine or a high blood test. This needs medical care, diet guidance and sometimes medicine. Do not stop insulin or tablets because of an emotional reading.
- Unusual thirst, passing large amounts of urine, unexplained weight loss, or tiredness that does not lift.
- Shaking, sweating, hunger, irritability or faintness that improves when you eat. Have blood sugar checked.
- Diabetes in pregnancy. It needs obstetric care.
- A child who is suddenly very thirsty, very tired or losing weight. Seek care the same day.
