**In short**

Thumb pain is pain in the thumb or at its base, from an injury, overuse or arthritis. Spiritually, the thumb is linked to pressure, both the pressure you put on yourself and the pressure you put on others, and a sore thumb often points to worry, an overfull mind and feeling pushed by life.

## What thumb pain is

The thumb does most of the hand's gripping, pinching and pressing, so it takes a lot of strain. Thumb pain is often caused by an injury: a sprain, a fracture, or a torn ligament at the base, sometimes called skier's thumb, after a fall onto the hand. Overuse inflames the tendons that run along the wrist side of the thumb, a condition called de Quervain's tenosynovitis, common in new parents and in people who type, text or use tools a lot. A thumb that clicks or locks when it bends is trigger thumb.

[**Osteoarthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoarthritis) very often affects the joint at the base of the thumb, especially after 50, causing aching, stiffness and a weaker pinch. [**Rheumatoid arthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rheumatoid-arthritis) and [**gout**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/gout) can also inflame it. Numbness and pins and needles in the thumb, index and middle fingers, worse at night, point to [**carpal tunnel syndrome**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/carpal-tunnel) in the [**wrist**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/wrist-pain).

Most thumb pain eases with rest, an ice pack, painkillers, a splint, and cutting down the movement that provokes it. A GP or hand therapist can offer exercises, steroid injections, and occasionally surgery. A suspected break needs an X-ray.

## The emotional meaning of thumb pain

Spiritually, the thumb is the most powerful finger of the hand. It stands for strength, your ability to take hold, and your need for power. The [**finger pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/finger-pain) page gives each finger its theme. Here the thumb has room for its whole story.

### Pressure, given and received

The thumb is linked to pressure: the pressure you put on your own shoulders, and the pressure you demand of others. It is the finger that pushes and presses. When it hurts, the questions are simple. Are your exchanges with others healthy? Do you push people too hard, or do you feel pushed by a hectic life? Do you always push yourself to the limit?

### Thumbs up, thumbs down

The thumb also judges. Raised from a closed hand, it gives approval. Turned down, it rejects. It weighs other people's actions as well as your own. It is linked to the intellect, to the way you deal with others, and to your sensitivity, and also to the mouth and to taste. A healthy thumb is read as a balance between your thoughts and your feelings.

### Feeling pushed

If you feel "pushed" by other people or by life, you may hurt your thumbs easily. The push can be in the things you have to do. It can also be an obligation to follow certain ways of doing things, certain beliefs or doctrines, without being able to object. Then you may become reactive, even aggressive, with others, because you are not acting from your own deeper values. What you really want to do stays in your thoughts instead of becoming real. The thumb shapes the kind of contact you have with others, and with yourself.

### An overfull mind

[**Anxiety**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anxiety) and constant [**worry**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/worry) affect the thumb. Spiritually, thumb injuries are linked to too much mental effort: an accumulation of ideas and concerns, often about a child, and a tendency to expect the worst. A sore thumb can also be linked to old worries and old thoughts you find hard to let go. Is there a fear of losing control? In French, to have *soupé* of something, literally to have "supped" on it, is to be fed up with it, and the thumb, tied to the mouth, may ache when you have had enough of a situation.

### Security and inner strength

A child sucks its thumb when it feels vulnerable, so the thumb also stands for security and protection. Tucking the thumb inside a closed fist is read as withdrawing, folding in to protect yourself from the world. The thumb is also life itself, the wish to live your own life, and the fear of no longer being master of yourself. Above all, it reminds you of your inner strength and your worth, and of your ability to turn what you desire and need into action in the physical world.

## A broken or injured thumb

Spiritually, the depth of the injury adds weight. A thumb that keeps getting knocked or strained points to feeling pushed and to a mind that is overloaded. A broken thumb is read as a sign that life needs to change radically. You may feel your back is against the wall. That brings real inner [**anguish**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/anguish), because the change asks you to let go of long-standing habits that have been hurting you.

## Left side or right side?

The side can add a nuance, as with the [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body). The left hand is the hand of the heart, the one that receives. The right hand acts and affirms. Everyone carries both principles, whatever their sex.

### Left thumb pain

Left thumb pain is linked to the feminine principle: feeling, intuition, tenderness, receiving, and the women in your life, such as a mother or a daughter. The pressure here is often emotional. You may be carrying worry for a child or someone close, or holding a family loyalty you cannot question. You may find it hard to say what you feel, or to let yourself be comforted. Ask what pressure you are carrying for love, and whether you allow yourself to receive.

### Right thumb pain

Right thumb pain is linked to the masculine principle: will, logic, action, work, and the men in your life, such as a father, a partner or a boss. The pressure here is often about performing, deciding and providing. You may be pushing yourself, or others, too hard at work, or following a rule or an authority you no longer agree with. Ask whose expectations you are trying to meet, and what you would do if you acted from your own values.

## A gentler way to hold it

From now on, the invitation is to be at peace with yourself, and to watch the signs your thumb gives you.

- **Let sadness rise.** If there is [**sadness**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/emotions/sadness) beneath the pressure, give it room.
- **Take life with less drama.** Situations can be met as they are, with trust that you are cared for.
- **Notice the negative loop.** When the worst-case thoughts start, name them and set them down.
- **Lean on your own values.** That can loosen an old family hold you have been clinging to.
- **Free your mind.** Empty the overflow of thoughts on paper, then choose one action.
- **Be the master of your life.** Push less, and let your own strength carry you.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Are my exchanges with others healthy, or do I push too hard, or feel pushed?
- Am I always pushing myself to the limit?
- Which worry, perhaps about a child, keeps going round in my head?
- Which rule or way of doing things do I feel obliged to follow without being able to object?
- What have I had enough of?
- Am I afraid of losing control, or of no longer being master of myself?

***Affirmation***

> “I am at peace with myself. I lean on my own values, I let the excess of thoughts go, and I am the master of my life.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Severe pain, a snap or popping noise at the time of an injury, a thumb that has changed shape or colour, or a thumb you cannot move or hold things with. It may be broken or a ligament may be torn. Go to an urgent treatment centre or A&E.
- Tingling, numbness or loss of feeling in the hand.
- Pain that stops your normal activities, keeps getting worse or coming back, or has not improved after two weeks of rest, ice and painkillers.
- A thumb that is hot, red, throbbing or swollen, or has pus near the nail. Hand infections can spread quickly.
- Any thumb or hand problem if you have diabetes.
- If you already have arthritis, do not stop prescribed treatment because of anything you read here.

## **Related conditions**

**Carpal tunnel syndrome**

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of a nerve in the wrist, with numbness in the fingers, often at night. It is read as a season of change in which you feel relegated, squeezed by responsibilities, and unable to loosen your grip.

**Finger pain**

Spiritually, finger pain is often linked to the details of daily action, and each finger carries its own theme. The thumb is pressure and worry, the index authority, the middle finger creativity and anger, the ring finger close bonds, and the little finger family and intuition.

**Wrist pain**

Spiritually, wrist pain is often linked to action that is held back, a great indecision about which way to go, and the feeling of being tied or handcuffed in a situation where you cannot say what you need to say.

**Osteoarthritis**

Osteoarthritis is often read as a hardening of attitudes. Rigid thinking, pushing beyond our limits without rest, perfectionism and resentment towards authority may slowly stiffen the joints.

[Osteoarthritis](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoarthritis)

**Sprain**

Spiritually, a sprain is often linked to resistance. You put the brakes on a direction (the ankle) or on what you are doing (the wrist), until the pressure lands on the ligaments.
