**In short**

Spiritually, right wrist pain is linked to will in action. It may sit with an action you keep holding back, pressure so great you no longer know which direction to take, responsibilities you would rather put down, and resisting a new solution at work.

## What right wrist pain is

Right wrist pain is pain, aching or stiffness in the right wrist. For most people this is the dominant hand, the one that writes, types, uses a mouse or a phone, holds tools and swings a racquet, so overuse is a frequent cause. Repetitive strain can inflame the tendons that cross the wrist. De Quervain's tenosynovitis causes pain at the base of the thumb, worse when gripping or twisting. [**Carpal tunnel syndrome**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/carpal-tunnel), with numbness and tingling in the thumb and first fingers, often at night, tends to be worse in the dominant hand.

Injuries are the other big group. A fall onto an outstretched hand can sprain or break the wrist, and a fracture of the small scaphoid bone may not show on the first X-ray, so pain at the base of the thumb after a fall should be rechecked. Weight-bearing on bent wrists, in press-ups, yoga or gymnastics, can also strain the joint. A ganglion, [**osteoarthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/osteoarthritis), gout and [**rheumatoid arthritis**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/joints-and-bones/rheumatoid-arthritis) are further causes. Heart pain is usually on the left, but arm pain on either side with chest pressure, breathlessness or sweating needs emergency help: call 999 in the UK, 911 in the US or 112 in the EU.

Mild pain usually settles with rest, ice, a support and simple painkillers. Changing the set-up helps a great deal: a lower keyboard, a neutral mouse, regular breaks, a lighter grip on tools. Splints, physiotherapy, injections and sometimes surgery are used depending on the cause. The page on [**wrist pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/wrist-pain) covers the condition as a whole.

## The emotional meaning of right wrist pain

Spiritually, the wrists are the pivots that start every movement of the hands. They express your will in action: when you act and move forward fluidly, the wrists are pictured as strong. In the map of [**the left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body), the right side carries the active, masculine principle, in women as much as in men: action, logic, decisions, work, the direction you choose, and the men in your life. So the right wrist tends to ask about the practical actions you take, or do not take, in the outer world.

### An action held back

Wrist pain is linked to a block, an obstruction or a refusal around actions you feel you should take. On the right, these are often practical: the application you have not sent, the conversation with a manager you keep postponing, the project you have not launched, the bill or the form left on the pile. Energy gathers around the action and stays in the wrist. Skilled, precise tasks are often the first to suffer.

### So much pressure that you lose your way

The pressure on you may be so great that you no longer know which direction to take. Spiritually, the wrist is the place of a great indecision. On the right, the choice is usually concrete: stay or leave a job, expand or close a business, accept or refuse an offer. The more options pull at you, the less your hand knows where to go.

### Responsibility you would rather put down

The wrist is linked to how you carry responsibility. You may want to reject your share in some situations, or find it hard to recognise how much your own actions matter. A gentle question is what the pain now spares you: which tasks, and so which responsibilities, you are no longer obliged to take on. On the right side, it may also be worth asking whether you blame colleagues, a boss or the system for a stiffness that is partly yours.

### Resisting new solutions

A wrist problem can show how easily you are swayed, and how firmly you resist new directions or new solutions. At work, this may be a new tool, a new way of doing things, or an idea of your own you keep dismissing because it does not fit the usual method.

### Handcuffed at work

Some people with sore wrists feel chained, as if handcuffed, in a situation where they are prevented from saying something. On the right, that is often a job: a contract, a hierarchy, a team where speaking up feels impossible. The wrist then stops the hand from moving.

### A break that calls you back

A sprain or fracture always needs proper care first. Spiritually, it is linked to a deep conflict about how you express yourself in life. A broken right wrist may feel like a call to stop looking for reasons to escape your responsibilities. Because the right side is partly learnt from your father, his relationship with duty may be part of the picture. For a man, the strain may touch rivalry. For a woman, it may touch her working life and the roles she wants to step out of.

## The other side

[**Left wrist pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/left-wrist-pain) is linked to actions of the heart: a gesture of care held back, difficulty receiving, creativity on hold, and feeling tied in a close relationship. The right wrist asks which practical action you postpone, the left which heartfelt one. The page on [**wrist pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/wrist-pain) holds both sides.

## A gentler way to hold it

- **Name the action.** Write down the one practical thing you keep not doing.
- **Do the smallest part of it.** One email, one call, one form, today.
- **Choose a direction for now.** When pressure leaves you undecided, a provisional choice is better than none.
- **Look at your share.** Notice which responsibility is truly yours, without blame towards yourself or anyone else.
- **Try one new solution.** Let a different method or your own idea have a fair trial.
- **Say what you have not said.** If you feel tied at work, start by naming it to someone you trust.
- **Rest the wrist.** Breaks, a better set-up and a support are part of acting with care.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Which practical action do I know I need to take and keep holding back?
- Is the pressure on me so great that I no longer know which way to go?
- Which responsibility at work would I rather put down, or not admit is mine?
- Do I blame others for a rigidity that is partly my own?
- Which new method, solution or direction am I resisting?
- What does this sore wrist now excuse me from doing?

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- Wrist pain after a fall onto an outstretched hand, especially with swelling or tenderness at the base of the thumb. Some wrist fractures do not show at first and need an X-ray.
- A wrist that looks deformed, or a hand that is numb, cold or pale after an injury. Go to A&E or urgent care.
- A hot, red, swollen wrist, especially with fever. This can be an infection or gout.
- Numbness or tingling in the thumb and fingers, often at night, or weakness of the grip.
- Arm pain on either side with chest pain, pressure or tightness, breathlessness, sweating or nausea. Call emergency services straight away (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in the EU).
- Pain that has not improved after two weeks of rest and simple painkillers, or that keeps coming back with work or sport.
- Morning stiffness or swelling in several joints, which can be a sign of inflammatory arthritis.

## **Related conditions**

**Carpal tunnel syndrome**

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of a nerve in the wrist, with numbness in the fingers, often at night. It is read as a season of change in which you feel relegated, squeezed by responsibilities, and unable to loosen your grip.

**Left wrist pain**

Spiritually, left wrist pain is linked to action that comes from the heart. It may sit with difficulty receiving what life offers, a caring or creative gesture you keep holding back, being swayed by people you love, and feeling tied in a relationship where you cannot say what you feel.

**Right elbow pain**

Spiritually, right elbow pain is linked to flexibility in action. It may sit with resisting a new direction at work, doing tasks you have no taste for, putting in more effort than others without credit, and an anger you hold back from striking with.

**Sprain**

Spiritually, a sprain is often linked to resistance. You put the brakes on a direction (the ankle) or on what you are doing (the wrist), until the pressure lands on the ligaments.
